Chapter 22
Virgil shot a glance at Remy and kneeled down beside Roman and Damien. Everyone was in shock, watching the scene before them.
"Roman," Virgil said, trying to get Roman to tear his gaze away from Damien. "Roman. Look at me," he said, a bit more firmly. He tried not to panic over the fact that his brother could be dead. He looked dead, at least. Roman glanced at him for a moment before looking down at Damien again. "What happened?" he asked, almost shakily.
Roman didn't speak. He just shrugged. He didn't look at him either. He kept his gaze on Damien. He was pale and shaky.
Virgil looked up at Remy, who pushed through the crowd to go back to them. "I need you to get Roman to talk, okay?" he said as Remy got to them. Remy nodded and sirens were heard approaching.
Three paramedics rushed in and pushed through the crowd of students. Virgil moved away and Remy pulled Roman a few feet away from Damien, struggling to hold Roman back as the paramedics checked Damien's pulse and put him on a stretcher, taking him away.
Virgil glanced at Roman and sighed. "I'll call you, stay here. Remy, get him to talk while I'm gone." Remy nodded and Virgil left, following the paramedics. He was not leaving his brother alone. He'd promised him and he was going to keep that promise.
He, somehow, was allowed inside the ambulance without argument. Something he was eternally grateful for, honestly. He kept his gaze on Damien as the paramedics worked to try to reanimate him.
He gently took Damien's hand and placed his index on his wrist, feeling a heartbeat. It was quick, but it was there. Thank God, it was there. He wasn't dead. He wasn't gone.
Damien was still there.
Right?
Assuming that whatever had happened was between Damien and someone else and not J.D.
Anxiety grew in his chest and his throat. No. That was Damien and it wasn't too late for him. If it had been J.D., Roman would probably be dead. It had been Damien... he just needed to figure out what really happened and why Roman was there.
The ride to the hospital was relatively quiet... other than the siren and the paramedics talking as they made sure Damien was stable. Afterward, they took Damien in for a resonance and CT and he was told to wait in the waiting room.
He was not up for that. The second Damien was out of sight, Virgil rushed out of the hospital and got in a cab. "Westerburg high," he said. "Hurry, please."
He needed answers. And now that J.D. was out of the field, he had a freeway to talk to Roman, Remy, Emile, and Logan. He needed them to be safe. He couldn't lose anyone else. He was sick of losing everyone. He was going to protect them no matter what it took.
When he reached the school, he threw a few bills, probably too many, onto the passenger's seat and rushed out of the car.
He shut his eyes as he bumped into someone. "Virgil?" they said. A girl's voice. He opened his eyes and saw Jane. "Good, I need your help."
Virgil frowned lightly as Jane dragged him inside the school. "There's something going on. There are cops and they are questioning Roman." Virgil froze for a moment before pulling Jane back.
"What do you mean? Where? And why are you telling me? You hate Roman," Virgil asked. He understood nothing. He hadn't understood anything since the night they broke into the school. "Why are they questioning Roman?"
"They think he did it. And I don't hate him, I just like Damien..." she mumbled under her breath. "They think it was a lover's fight or something, we have to hurry!" She pulled Virgil again, running to the principal's office.
Virgil nearly tripped as he tried to keep up with her. God, this was not how he expected today to go... or that whole year, for that matter.
The door to the office opened just as they got there, making them stop in their tracks. They both froze, their eyes wide as they looked at a police officer pull a defeated Roman out. Handcuffed.
What was going on?!
