Chapter 41 | Hurricane Luka [part 2]
After a whole week of sleepless nights, power going on and off, and flooding water down the hill, the sun was finally shining again.
Aries stood in the doorway in their pyjamas looking up at the sky now starting to see sun again. The rain and stopped, the winds had calmed and the thunder and lightning was gone. Hurricane Luka was finally over. But the bay was a mess. Fallen branches and leaves littered the streets, things people never tied down we're all over the roads, flowerbeds were wrecked.
"Damnit cleaning this will take forever..." Aries sighed, kicking a fallen branch in their front yard.
"Good morning mx comatose!"
Turning to face the voice they found Icarus walking up the path.
"What are you doing up so early?" Aries asked.
"I could ask you the same thing. You always sleep in" she replied.
"Couldn't sleep with all the wind"
"Same, figured I'd come see the damage. There's still a bit of flooding at the bottom of the hill so be careful down that way"
Icarus looked around the yard at all the damage.
"At least your place isn't too bad, mines a wreck" Icarus said, kicking a fallen branch.
"Uh oh, what happened?" Aries asked.
"There's a trampoline on my roof"
Aries gave her a blank look, processing what she just said.
"There's... a trampoline-" Aries began.
"Yep"
"On your roof?"
"Yep" Icarus replied.
"How-"
"Some dickhead didn't tie their trampoline down, the hurricane picked it up, and now it's on my roof"
Aries just gave her an exasperated expression again.
"Wow" they stated.
"I know" Icarus replied.
"Well I'm going to get changed and take a look at the rest of the bay" Aries said.
"Exactly what I'm doing, let's pass by Zag and Pandora"
Aries made a quick change, and the two headed out to see what the town had become after the storm. They found that the streets were littered with broken off branches, puddles of water and random debris all over the place. Luckily the damage didn't seem earth shattering, but it was quite the mess the town would be cleaning up for a while. The two went down to the docks where Pandora and Zags houses were, at the end of the street Zagreus was out the front of his house along with his mother raking up leaves and branches.
"Heeeeyyy zag!" Icarus called out.
Zagreus looked up as the two approached him, his mother walking over too.
"Good morning kiddos, you're up early" his mother said.
"Hey, your houses ok?" He asked.
"Apart from the trampoline on my roof, yeah" Icarus said.
"A trampo-"
"Yeah"
"Wow" Zagreus stated.
"I know" Icarus replied.
"My place is fine, just covered in sticks" Aries added.
"Good, at least no serious damage was done. Mums mad her hydrangeas were crushed" Zagreus said.
"Years I grew those babies! Years! Now I have to start from scratch" she sighed.
The kids snickered, absolutely expecting her reaction to it.
"We're going by Pandoras place to see her too, wanna come?" Aries asked.
"Yeah, iiffff mum will let me take a break from raking leaves" Zag replied, looking over at his mum.
She playfully rolled her eyes and took his rake from him.
"Alright. Make sure she's alright and come back before midday. There's still a ton of cleaning to do" she agreed.
"Thanks, I'll be back at like 12:30" Zag replied.
The three set off for Pandoras place, observing the rest of the street cleaning up all the mess on their properties. The closer to the beach the got, the more of a mess things got as the rough seas tossed sand all over the streets. They turned into pandoras place and knocked on the door, only to find no one was home.
"Probably down at the docks checking the boat" Icarus said.
"Probably, bet her dad was freaking out all week" Aries replied.
The went across the road to the docks and sure enough she was down by her families boat checking for any damage.
"Everything in tact frostbite?" Zagreus said, catching her attention.
She looked up from her place by the boat and she approached the other three.
"Yep. We secured it enough nothing happened. Can't say the same for some of the other boats along here though, some have cracks and leaks" she replied.
"Yikes, that'll be expensive" Aries replied.
"I know, y'all good?"
"Yeah we're all fine. Icarus has a trampoline on her roof though" Zagreus said.
Pandora gave Icarus a confused look, Icarus just shrugged.
"Yep" she said.
"Wow" Pandora stated.
"I know"
Zagreus looked around for a moment making sure no humans were close enough to hear what he was about to say, in hopes of not getting caught.
"Ok now we're all in one place there's something that's been bugging me all week" he began.
The three gave him confused looks.
"If all this damage was done to the coast, is the spirit pool ok?" He asked.
They all suddenly realised that the hurricane and rough seas could have absolutely destroyed the pool, since it was connected to the ocean and off the coast right where the storm hit. They did know it was a risk beforehand, but the hurricane was so much stronger than they'd thought they were worried now.
"Shit..." Aries said.
"Hopefully, we should check it out. You think the waters are safe?" Pandora replied.
"I mean they've been still since the winds stopped so we should be fine. And it's already getting hot again, although if the seas got rough enough some of the reefs might be a bit roughed up" Icarus added.
"Let's check it out" Zagreus said.
It wasn't long before they were off in the water swimming up the coast toward the pool, and making sure the damage underwater wasn't as bad at the damage on land it seemed pretty normal aside from some tossed up sand until they were met with a block in their path. One of the reefs had been broken up and rocks had fallen off one of the cliffs. They all surfaced to figure out another way there.
"Well that's definitely different" Pandora said.
"Probably from the cliffside collapsing when the waves hit it" Zagreus replied.
"Let's go around, just in case anything in the area is still unstable" Aries added.
"Good idea I'm not in the mood for being squashed by falling rocks" Icarus replied.
They dove back under, and this time they went around the path they usually took. Although something else caught their eye on the way there, something they'd never noticed before since they hadn't gone this far out before. A shipwreck, a standard small fishing vessel that looks like it'd been there for a good while. Taking note of it they swam past it and toward the spirit pool, surfacing once they arrived.
Luckily, the spirit pool looked almost the exact same. Just a bit wetter from the rough waves that came in. They looked around, making sure everything was ok.
"Looks pretty much the same" Icarus replied.
"Thank god. I was worried it'd be damaged and the magic would be all whacked up too" Zagreus sighed in relief.
"I never knew there was a ship wreck off the coast" Aries commented.
They leaned up against the side of the pool to talk.
"I forgot about that, it's been so long now. I'm pretty sure it's the liberty" Pandora said.
"Oh yeah! I remember when that happened it was all over the news!" Icarus replied.
Aries gave them a confused look, not having been in the human realm when the ship sunk and having no idea what the situation was.
"Context please?" They asked.
"How long again was it now? Like... over a decade? I was in primary school" Zagreus replied.
"Same. I think it was like... 1995? Around that time at least. The crew were sketchy as hell, they used the same docks my dad does so he saw them all the time. The ship sunk under mysterious circumstances, and the crew did manage to survive but they all skipped town afterwards because it came out the boat wasn't even licensed or up to code and they were facing charges" Pandora explained.
"Did they ever figure out what caused the ship to sink?" Icarus asked.
"I don't think so. All we ever found out was it wasn't up to safety code and they were dumb enough to try and get into the rough waters of the gallows. Strange that it sunk without any visible damage though..."
Aries found this mildly interesting and took a mental note of it.
"Huh... interesting..." they muttered.
"Speaking of underwater mysteries, if the sand got all tossed up in here... you think it might have revealed something?" Zagreus jumped in.
That was all it took for them to all duck under water in hopes that something long buried would reveal itself at the bottom of the pool. They brushed up some of the sand to see if anything would show itself, and to their luck, Pandora found something. A string revealed itself, and when she pulled it out of the hand it had a charm on the end, making it a crystal necklace. She bought it to the surface to get a better look and one by one the others surfaced too.
"Ooo, pretty" Icarus commented.
"Hang on..." Aries began, taking the necklace off her.
They gave it a closer look, held it up to the light to make sure they were seeing things right.
"This is Nyxite" they said.
"No way, really?" Zagreus replied, taking the necklace to look it over "oh my gods it is!"
"Nyxite?" Icarus questioned.
"It's a crystal that's only found in Izroulia. Names after the goddess of Night because it looks like a chunk of the night sky full of stars"
Icarus took it from Zagreus to take a look, and found Aries was right. The gem was dark in colour but had shiny little specs in it that reflected the light and made it look like twinkling stars.
"They're usually used for moon and star related magic, and worn by people who worship Nyx" Zagreus explains.
"And if it's here then-" Pandora began.
"Then we have another clue" Aries finished.
They all looked at the necklace and the gem it held, newly motivated to find out more about what happened to the pod now they finally had yet another clue.
