Tonight was the night. Under the cover of darkness, they'd break into the castle and steal the grimoire. It would be dangerous, but it had to be done. They each wore hooded cloaks to conceal any identifying feature of themselves. This was the closest they'd been to the castle, they'd snuck through the towns using back alleys and forested trails. Now they all huddled just outside the castle walls, looking for a way in.

"Ok... we'll have to climb. You two get up high and keep watch. in a tree or something" Aries said.

Pandora and Aries were the ones who'd be breaking in, as their powers were the most useful in this situation. The other two were on lookout duty.

"Talk to us with signals, if something happens use your powers. Make the water move or the ground shake" Pandora added.

"Got it. Be careful" Zagreus replied.

"We will, you make sure you don't get spotted either. Once we're out we go straight for the river and swim up it to where we came in. Then we go home" Aries explained.

"Roger that, come in Zag let's go" Icarus said.

The group split up, Icarus and Zagreus into the trees to keep watch and Aries with Pandora over to the walls. The walls were tall, but climbable me with some work.

"You're taller, I'll boost you" Aries said.

Pandora stepped up into Aries hands and was pushed up high enough to grab the wall and climb up. Grabbing Aries arms, she pulled the shorter one up with her. The garden was on the other side of the wall, and no guards were in sight. They jumped down, landing with a thud and hiding behind the rose bushes.

"You see a way in?" Pandora asked.

"That window, it slides. If we push hard enough it will open" Aries replied, pointing out a window just across the garden.

They crept through the garden, staying low to not be spotted by anyone passing by. Making sure the coast is clear, they ran up to the window and peeked inside. It was a storage room and no one was inside. Bingo.

"Ok help me out" Aries said.

The two pushed on the window with as much force as they could until it cracked open and they could get their fingers underneath to push it up. They climbed in, being as quiet at possible.

"Do you know which way to go?" Pandora asked.

"Not really but I know it's at the front. There's this huge window you can see from the front gates so it's up a few floors" Aries replied.

They quietly opened the door and peeked into the hall. No one was around, and they spotted the stairwell down the hallway.

"Ok, let's go!" Aries whispered.

They quickly zipped out and with shuffled steps to make as little noise as possible they got to the stairs and began to climb up them.

"I thought there'd be more guards?" Pandora whispered.

"They guard the queen, where ever she is they'll be too. The ones who guard entrances and artefacts are always as their post" Aries replied.

They got a few floors up, and peeked around the corner to find a guard standing outside one of the doors. It was a single gorgon, his snake hair peeking out from under his helmet.

"That's a fucking Medusa!" Pandora whisper yelled.

"Shhhh! He's a gorgon, one look from him and we're stone. Gotta get him out of here..." Aries replied.

They thought for a moment, but Pandora was the one to come up with something.

"They're cold blooded right?" She asked.

"Yeah, part snake" Aries replied.

"I'll freeze the area just enough to make him cold so he leaves to get a coat"

"Good idea"

Pandora lifted her hand, carefully cooling the air in the hall and making the corners of the room slowly from frost. After a moment or two the guard shivered and bought his arms up to warm himself.

"It's not winter yet... what gives?" He muttered.

He looked at his watch and sighed.

"Ah, it can leave for two minutes to get a coat..."

He headed down the hallway and up the stairwell on the other side of the hall, leaving his post so the Merfolk could sneak past.

"Go!" Aries whispered.

They dashed down the hall and around the corner, spotting the doorway to the library at the end. Befriend they could run toward it though, they noticed two more guards standing outside. They quickly scrambled into an empty room with an open door and peeked around the corner.

"We gotta get rid of them" Pandora whispered.

"I can't tell what the one on the right is but the one on the left is a fae. They're really superstitious, I have an idea" Aries replied.

They conjured up a small fireball, keeping it afloat in the hall and pushing it toward the guards.

"What are you doing?" Pandora asked.

"You'll see" Aries smirked.

When the guard noticed it, he immediately backed up and into the door.

"Dude- that's a whisp" he said.

The other guard looked over and gave the fireball a strange look.

"Dude whips are blue" they replied.

"THEN WHAT IS THAT GLOWING BALL? I don't wanna die thank you!" The fae replied in a panic.

Pandora snickered watching the two guards bicker.

"Whips are said to appear when you're going to die" Aries explained.

Aries pushed the fireball closer to the guard, making him scramble away.

"Dude you're being dramatic it's probably a firefly" the other guard said.

"WHAT FIRE FLY IS THAT BIG MICHAEL?"

"Oh my god you're such a baby. Come back here we're on duty"

The guard scrambled away, the other one following him. Just for good measure Aries made sure to keep the fire burning for a little longer until they were definitely gone before they made their dash for the library.

"Ok let's go" they said.

The two rushed up to the doors and pushed them open, running into the library and straight for the book encased in glass in the centre. Pandora was about to grab the case to lift it when Aries stopped her.

"No don't! You'll leave fingerprints. No evidence remember?" Aries said.

"How to we get it out th- wait hang on..." Pandora replied.

She looked around for something flat, spotting a ruler on one of the desks. She grabbed it and jammed it under the glass case, lifting it up so Aries could reach under and grab the book. Sliding it out, they slipped it into a bag under their cloak and the two turned and ran back out.

"Ok we got in, we got gone book, let's get out" Aries said.

"I can't believe that worked..." Pandora replied.

As they snuck down the hallways, Icarus and Zagreus watched them pass by windows from their spot in the trees.

"They got it, they're so close" Icarus muttered, completely engrossed in their shadows moving past the windows.

"Shit- Ic" Zagreus said, whacking her arm for her attention.

Not too far down the hall was another shadow, heading right for them.

"Fuck, warn them" Icarus said.

Using his powers, Zagreus made the ground shake slightly. Enough the two inside could feel it.

"Shit that was Zag, what is-" Aries said.

"HEY!"

The voice of a guard down the hall in front of them made the two immediately look up in panic.

"RUN" Aries demanded.

They turned on their heels and ran, being followed by the guard.

"INTRUDERS! GET BACK HERE!" He yelled.

"Where do we go?" Pandora asked, running alongside Aries.

"Other stair well!" Aries replied.

They skidded down the hall, making it to the stairwell with several guards now following them. With the guards and soon the queen knowing of their presence, they'd have to get out FAST. As they scampered down the stairs hearing yelling behind them, it was clear they'd need to use their powers to escape.

"Freeze the floor make 'em slip!" Aries exclaimed.

As they ran, Pandora held her hand out and coated the hall floor behind her in ice, causing some of the guards to slip. The Merfolk were now running for their lives, because if they got caught their lives would be over.

All the noise in the big hallways echoed. And from the very top of the castle as more and make guards were altered of intruders, Agnemetra could hear the chaos from her throne.

The wingless Phoenix who'd taken the throne by force looked up from her book, sensing trouble.

"Vermin... in my castle..."
