Emerald Eyes

Emerald Eyes

She stood in front of the mirror.

Confused,

Afraid,

More alone than she had ever felt in her life.

Her hand went to her face.

She could feel her skin,

But it was foreign,

Unfamiliar,

Cold to the touch.

Her eyes were fixed on the mirror.

She put both hands on its surface.

It was smooth,

Yet unusually cool,

Empty.

“Where are you?

Why have you left me now?

Now, when I need you more than I ever have before.”

She leaned in closer, looking for the familiar face,

But all she saw was emptiness.

Dark,

Uninviting,

Endless void of loneliness.

“You have always been here.

Always, the only true friend I ever had.

I need you. Please don’t desert me now.”

She put her face on the mirror.

Tears filled her emerald eyes and her voice,

Quivered, trembled, and went low, unfamiliar.

“I love you. I always have.

And I am so sorry that I have put you through all this.

Maybe I deserve to be alone.”

She stepped back.

Looked into the empty darkness of the mirror.

“Where are you?”

Her hand went to her face. She felt nothing.

“Where am I?”
