Avis thought that Phill's movers were very rude.

She was unsure, however, whether the insolence came from the fact that Phill's workers had grown fond of her mother's charismatic attitude and learned that they could indeed not have her, or because that the man that could have her was Avis' father. Avis learned in second grade that pretty white woman, in fact, were not supposed to get married to hard faced black men.

The moment her mother said, "This is my husband Robert." To Phil's worked and laid a small artist's hand on Avis' father's chest, the workers faces dropped in a very angry manner, and they made no further effort to commence small talk and instead grunted when asked questions.

Avis' parents didn't seem to notice and when Avis brought it up in the car her mother laughed and her father said with hard eyes Avis needed to stop using racism as a reason for people's acrimony.

After this Avis did not say anything.
