Chapter 10

"Nina, please tell me that Adrienne is with you." Marin pleaded into the phone. He was still searching around the carnival, asking people if they had seen her while he was on the phone.

"You mean to tell me that you lost Adrienne? Dude, how do you lose a woman?" Nina screamed into the phone, then took a deep breath. "Tell me where you are and me and Alyn will come find you." Nina proposed, saying something incoherent through the phone to Alyn, who was right next to her.

"By the Ferris wheel. Please, hurry." He hung up the phone. Marin tapped his foot impatiently as he looked around. He hated to just stand here while Adrienne could be in danger. He saw Miles walking around and approached him quickly. "Miles, hey, have you seen Adrienne?" He asked in the most calm way he could. He didn't want to make it seem as if he was worried, but it was clear to see.

Miles turned to face the other and raised a brow, placing a hand on his hip. He let his eyes narrow into a glare as he realized who was asking the question. "Why does it concern you? She's probably with that one stupid hero if I had to guess. Is she supposed to be here?" Miles started glancing around the room, searching for the blonde, just as the other was previously.

"She is supposed to be here, I was just wondering if you had seen her. I'll see you around." Marin turned to leave to continue on his search, but he was stopped by Miles grip on his arm.

Miles chuckled. "Let me help you look. I need to talk to her anyway." He let go of Marin's arm, but he had clear intentions of following him.

Marin sighed. What could he do? He could use all the help he could get. And if more people were looking, the chances of finding her were much higher. As much as he disliked Miles, he was willing to work together with him if it meant that the he could find Adrienne faster. "Fine. First, I have to meet up with Nina and Alyn." He said with a hint of anger in his voice. He really didn't like the idea of working with Miles.

Marin and Miles made their way to the Ferris Wheel, seeing Nina and Alyn just arriving there. Alyn smiled upon seeing Marin, but frowned a bit when he noticed that Miles was there as well. "I didn't know that you two were all buddy-buddy now." Alyn teased Marin, making him glare back at him.

"We're not all "buddy-buddy." He's just helping us look for Adrienne. Please tell me you guys have seen her." Marin was basically begging for help right now. The adrenaline was coursing through him and he didn't know what to do. He usually had an immediate solution to every problem. Every villain. He was a hero. He was supposed to know what to do, but he just couldn't think of what to do. How could he protect and save Paris on a daily basis, but he couldn't even keep the most important person to him safe.

He would have felt better if Adrienne had her ring with her. If she had her ring, then she could easily transform and escape when she got the chance, but without the ring, she didn't stand a chance. As strong as she was, there was no way she could defend herself against someone who clearly had something against her. If this person was after her, then there was a low chance that he would let her go easily.

"If you say so. Well, I'm going to go and file a missing person's report after we look a little longer. And while I do that, Nina is going to check in with Nathan, you know, her mom's assistant, and see what he can do. Maybe we'll get lucky and LB and Chat Noire will come and help us out. That'd be a huge advantage." Alyn explained his plan, giving Nina a high five. "How about you two start asking around?" Alyn suggested, then took off quickly with wave goodbye, grabbing Nina's arm.

Marin took this as an opportunity to transform. That is, if he could get rid of Miles. "Alright, how about you start asking near the bathrooms, where she disappeared, and I'll ask by the cotton candy stand. And we'll keep moving closer and closer to each other until we've covered most of the grounds." He suggested, hoping Miles would agree.

"Sounds like a plan." Miles nodded in agreement to the plan with a small smile, almost undetectable. It was more of a grin, and it put Marin on edge. It was a bit creepy and he didn't know what it really meant, but he shook his head, deciding that it was just a smile and he shouldn't look to deeply into every little detail.

But he had to be cautious as well. It seemed weird that he hadn't seen Miles prior to her disappearance. Stop it, Marin. You're going crazy. You can't just accuse every person of taking her. He took a deep breath and nodded, making his way towards the cotton candy stand and watching back as Miles disappeared into the crowd.

He made his way out of the carnival where no one was in sight. He opened his bag and allowed Tikki to slip out. "Come on, Tikki, spots--"

"Wait, Marin!" Tikki stopped him from transforming. This clearly put even more stress on Marin. Poor kid. He wasn't too interested in anything but finding Adrienne immediately and the quickest way to do that would be as Ladybeetle. "Maybe Plagg managed to escape. He might know who took her."

Marin's eyes widened. He had never even thought about that. Chances were, though, that Plagg stayed with Adrienne, probably thinking that she still had her ring. "I don't know. I think Plagg would have stayed with Adrienne. I don't think he knows that Adrienne doesn't have her ring." He pulled the small silver object out of his pocket, examining it.

Tikki had confirmed that it was the Chat Noir ring. "Please, Tikki, I need to transform now. Any other ideas before I do?" He was hoping that she would, but she simply shook her head with a sad smile. "Alright then, Tikki, spots on!"

"Adrienne, stop that." Plagg said quietly, yet in a stern and demanding voice. He watched as Adrienne pulled and pulled on the chains that were holding her hands to a wall. She had been struggling to get out of them since she had been put in them and showed no signs of stopping.

Adrienne shook her head. "N-No, I have to get out." Her voice cracked as she spoke. She violently yanked on the chains again, and again, and again. Her breathing was ragged and her hands had definitely seen better days. She continued her pulling. She couldn't feel the pain on her bruised and now bloody wrists. Fear was the only thing she could feel.

"Adrienne!" He tried once more, but it was to no avail. She didn't stop her actions, and she didn't plan on stopping soon. Plagg knew she was scared. Here she was in this dark room without her ring and with no way of reaching anyone, and there was someone who could kill her at any moment in the same building. "Let me go get Marin and Tikki."

Adrienne shook her head. "No, t-there might be an akuma attack, and they'll need to protect the city from him - or her - and they can't be worried about saving me. Someone else will realize I'm gone. S-Someone else will come. The p-police will know and, they'll be here, and--" She stopped, not knowing what else to say. She bit down on her lip and pulled on the chains, wincing in pain. "Someone will..."

Adrienne screamed out in agony, making Plagg cover his ears. Her thoughts were that if she could just scream loud enough then there would be someone, anyone, nearby that would hear her. She let out a coarse sob as she screamed once more. "Somebody! Anybody!" She felt the warm tears roll down her cheeks, after being welled up in her eyes. "Please..." Her voice quieted down to a whisper.

Her eyes grew heavy, and she couldn't keep her eyes open any longer. She wanted to sleep. She wanted to sleep it all away, but that wasn't an option. If she fell asleep, she feared that the worst would happen. She knew eventually that the man who took her would come back, and she would have to be awake. She had to see him. She could probably identify him if she could just see him.

Eventually came sooner than she would have hoped. The door locks started to click. There was more than one, and suddenly, the tired feeling vanished. It was replaced with adrenaline and fear. The door creaked open, quite loudly if she may add, making a retched screeching sound, which made her cover her ears. The room was too dark for her to see who was there. She couldn't even see right in front of her. "Who are you?" She for some reason, felt the need to ask him, even if she knew she wouldn't get an answer.

As she had presumed, the man didn't answer. He simply set down a tray in front of her. The tray was covered with food. It hardly looked appetizing, and she wasn't that hungry. But even though her mind said one thing, her stomach said another. She clearly was hungry, as the growl in her stomach had told her so. He left the room after placing the food down, letting out a small chuckle. Even if he had given her food, she couldn't reach it. It was a few feet too far from where her chains would allow her to reach. "Enjoy, princess."

Despite her fear, she let out a small growl of anger towards him. She didn't want to show she was scared. She couldn't let him see she was scared. She had to be brave. Or at least pretend to be. But as soon as he left, the tears continued to flow down her cheeks. Plagg wanted to leave to go find Tikki and Marin, but he also didn't want to leave her alone.

Hours had passed, and the man had not returned. She had been yelling out to anyone who could hear her. She didn't think it was possible to cry this much, nor did she think it was possible to yell for as long as she did, yet she did. And even as her voice turned hoarse and cracked, she still continued. Though, now it was just a small whisper, barely audible. "Somebody..." She bit her lip, trying to finally stop herself from crying. "Marin...?" She let her head hang down, letting out a shaky breath. "Plagg, leave. Please, go find him... Please..." She whimpered, not looking at the small kwami.

Plagg didn't need to be told twice. He immediately shifted through the wall, flying as quickly as he could to go find Tikki and Marin. He flew for a while until he found Ladybeetle almost asleep on the roof of a building. He huffed in anger and sped towards the hero, screaming in his ear. "Wake up!"

Ladybeetle shot up from his lying down position sharply, looking around. "A-Adrienne?!" He noticed Plagg and his eyes widened. "P-Plagg! You're here! W-Where is Adrienne?" He stood up and held the small Kwami in his hands. "Where is Adrienne?" He said more sternly. "I h-have her ring."

"Cool it, kid. There's no way they're going to allow you into the building as Ladybeetle. You need to transform. Preferably not on a roof, and somewhere you can actually get to her." Plagg started to explain where Adrienne was as Ladybeetle jumped from the roof into an alley where he could de-transform.

"Alright, I got it. Once you lead me to the building, I'll have you bring Adrienne's ring to her. It'll need to be a backup plan in case I'm not able to get to her. I'm- Is she okay? Has he hurt her?" His voice was laced with venom and hatred.

"He hasn't hurt her, yet. But if you don't hurry, who knows what's going to happen." Plagg's worry was showing in both his voice and his words.

"R-Right. Lead the way." Marin nodded as he followed Plagg towards the building. Luckily, it was late enough so there was no one in sight. It was at least 11 at night.

"Marin! There you are." Marin stopped in his steps as he heard the voice behind him. Plagg and Tikki both hid in his shirt, keeping themselves out of sight.

Marin turned to see Miles behind him. Shit. Marin thought as he approached the other. "Hey, Miles. I think I've gotten a lead on where she might be. I'm about to go investigate further." Marin offered a smile, hoping that Miles would leave soon. The longer he stayed her, the longer Adrienne would be trapped inside that building. The higher the chances that her captor could hurt her. He didn't want to wait another minute.

"Really? I can help you." Miles returned the smile, though it wasn't very friendly.

Marin felt a little off put by the smile, but he didn't have time to worry about it. He needed to get to Adrienne, and he couldn't wait any longer. "I've got it covered, don't worr-"

"No, really. I want to help." Miles voice had turned a bit irritated, which raised some suspicion with both Marin and the two Kwami's who were trying to stay hidden.

If Miles were to join them, then it would be impossible for Plagg to show him where to go. That couldn't happen. He couldn't let that happen, it would just kill time. Precious time that couldn't be wasted. "Okay," Marin had to think of something quick. "First, we need to get the cops to wait outside the building."

"Alright. You go get the cops, and I'll go in and rescue Adrienne." The irritated tone in Miles voice seemed to vanish.

Marin mentally cursed, wishing he could just knock Miles out and run, but that wasn't an option. "I was actually thinking that you went to get the cops, and I would go get Adrienne." He smiled condescendingly.

Miles definitely noticed the meaning of the his smile, and was far less than thrilled about it. "No, I'll get Adrienne. Which building?" He growled, but it was followed by an annoyed smile. Miles was not having it. He didn't want Marin to get all the attention as the hero. He already had when he saved her life the first time, and Miles wanted to win over her heart. And if he were to save her, it would make her fall for him, or at least he thought.

Marin had had it up to his eyes with Miles. He was not about to waste anymore time than he already had. He grabbed his collar, yanking him closer. "Listen, Miles. I don't know why you can't just go get the god damn police. It is not that fucking difficult to just listen to me. I know what I'm doing, and I am not about to have Adrienne's life put in even more danger because you are too self-absorbed to just do what I told you." Marin snapped at him through gritted teeth, then let go of his shirt. He didn't wait for a reply. He just ran away from Miles.

Once Miles was out of sight, Plagg and Tikki flew out of his jacket. "Turn right here." Plagg continued to give directions, as if nothing had happened with Miles.

"Don't you think you were a little harsh?" Tikki asked softly with a small frown.

Marin didn't say anything, he simply followed Plagg's directions. He didn't think he was too harsh. Maybe he was, but it was a concern. As always, Adrienne's safety was top priority. He just wanted to have her back in his arms. Safe and sound.

The building was now right in front of him. "A restaurant? Are you sure this is the place, Plagg?" Marin narrowed his eyes in speculation. He didn't feel like it was right. It couldn't be right. Why would her captor hide her in a public restaurant?

"Yeah, there's a staircase going down multiple floors. She's down there." Plagg nodded then shifted through the door before unlocking it for Marin. The three walked in, Tikki and Plagg staying close to Marin in case they needed to hide.

"Take Adrienne her ring. I don't trust it here." Marin gave Plagg the small ring, and the kwami took off towards where Adrienne was. He moved hastily in getting it to her as well.

"Be careful, Marin. I think someone else is here." Tikki muttered to the miraculous wearer as she hid in the pocket of Marin's jacket. She was usually correct in her speculations as well, and that made Marin worried.

Marin was skeptical about it to begin with, actually. He felt as if getting in was far too easy. There had to be something that was supposed to get in the way. Some sort of obstacle. This person was far too organized before, there was no way he would let it be this easy. He was missing something. He took cautious steps through the dining area, keeping close to the walls and examining everything closely. There had to be some kind of trap. Something that was supposed to stop him. "It's too easy."

The lights flickered for a moment, triggering Marin's anxiety. He wanted to transform in order to protect himself and get to Adrienne, but there was no way he could do that if someone was here. He knew it was a trap. He knew he should have been more cautious. He looked around, but he didn't see anything.

"Why do you say that?" Marin gasped as he felt a sharp pain in his back, then fell to the floor. Marin managed to keep his eyes open to see who it was. "This all could have been avoided, Marin. You just had to let me get Adrienne instead. Sure, I wouldn't have saved her and brought her back to you, but I would have gotten her and no one would've been hurt. But you- You just couldn't let it go." Miles grabbed the back of Marin's shirt, lifting him from the floor with a grin. He had a knife in his hand, which was covered in blood, most likely Marin's.

"H-How could you-" Marin couldn't finish his sentence, as he had started coughing, blood spurting from his mouth as he did. He was fading in and out of consciousness, but he still tried to get up. "A-Adrienne..."

Miles rolled his eyes, then kicked Marin in his stomach, making the other wince in pain. "Oh, get over it. It wouldn't have worked out. And without you, I have a chance. I just need to make sure I keep her as far away from you and Ladybeetle as possible. And if that means taking her out of Paris. Out of France, then so be it." He chuckled.

Marin's vision was going blurry. He wanted to stop him. He wanted to get up and fight. He wanted to save her. Save his Adrienne. He tried. But he couldn't move a muscle. And then he blacked out.
