Chapter 26

I suffered from an agonizing headache as I tried to open my eyes, and once I did, the headache echoed through my head, making the whole room go spinning. I held my head and blinked a few times to regain my concentration. After a while, I was finally able to focus and figure out my surroundings, I was in a small room that had nothing in it except the bed I was lying on, and a chair that faced the bed, I guessed that someone was watching me while I was unconscious.

I tried to stand up but moaned in pain as soon as my body moved an inch, my whole body was sore as a result of my struggle with my attacker. I ignored the pain and stood up before I made my way to the room's door, I tried to open it but of course, it was locked. I looked around the room for something that might help me to unlock the damn door but I didn't find any, and unfortunately, I wasn't wearing any hairpins.

After a while of tough thinking, I went to the chair and flipped it upside down. A smile made its way to my face when I noticed that the nails were thin enough to help me open the door. I unscrewed two of them using my own nails, then I stood up and walked back to the door. I put both of them in the keyhole and started moving them clockwise and counter-clockwise until I heard the satisfying sound that declared that the door was opened. Honestly, I didn't know what was waiting for me outside, or maybe I did but I was just trying to bluff myself that it wasn't true. Anyway, I wanted to get the hell out of here. I took a deep breath before I put my hand on the door's knob and turned it slowly. I poked my head out of the door and made a double check that the place was clear before I walked outside of the room.

"Wow, I took away everything that could help you pick the lock on that door, but you still managed to do it. Still skilled as the old days, Em," a familiar voice that I never wanted to hear again said from behind me and made me froze in my footsteps.

"Adam," I said between gritted teeth as I turned around and faced him. His gray eyes were piercing through me.

"In flesh and blood, sweetheart." He was leaning on the wall, a smirk on his face. The urge to beat the hell out of him was so strong but seeing a gun hanging from his belt made me ignore it.

Moments of silence passed as we continued to look at each other, and I was running through all the possible options I had in my head which actually seemed like I had none.

"So," I finally managed to get a voice out of me. "Did you break me out of prison to finally have your revenge?"

He snorted, and let out a laugh. "Who said anything about revenge here?"

"Then, why?" I asked looking at his gray eyes that I used to love.

"Unlike your family, I couldn't manage to leave you to rot in prison," he answered, calmly.

I chuckled sarcastically. "And, who the hell told you that I wanted to get out?"

His look changed to seriousness, and he ran his fingers through his light brown hair before he looked me in the eye. "So, did you want to serve your prison time, and get out so that your FBI boyfriend who put you in prison in the first place, knows that you have truly changed, and became a model citizen, then get back to you?"

Anger and rage were burning inside of me. "Shut up!" I seethed at him.

"Face the truth, Emma. We're not capable of changing or leaving this life. It's like a ghost that will haunt you forever wherever you go, and there are only two ways to end it. One, spending your whole life behind bars, and two, death," he said, smiling in satisfaction.

"There's no we in this, Adam. I'm not like you, and I will never be. You are a sociopath," I said, frowning at him. "Let me guess, you broke out of prison to take your true form: a murderer."

"You may be right, everybody fears me now." He smirked, then his expressions softened. "The point is, I still love you, Emma. We can be a team just like the old days. Only this time, we will be invincible."

"Sorry, I think I will pass." I scoffed. "I don't want anything that has something to do with you. Just have some dignity, and let me go."

He frowned and looked at me angrily before he gripped my wrist so tightly that I felt my bones might break. "Oh dear, Emma. I don't think you have much choice in the matter," he hissed at my face then he let go of my hand. "You will now follow me to your new room, and change your clothes. And you will always obey my orders, or I won't be so gentle the next time."

I looked at him in fear, not believing how much of a monster he became. I found myself nodding automatically. He smiled and started walking while holding my hand, leading me to my new room. I walked inside the room, it was a modern master room with a queen-sized bed, a wardrobe, and a dresser. There was also a bathroom in it.

"Here's the bathroom, if you need a shower, and you will find everything you need in the wardrobe," he said, then he was about to leave but turned around and looked at me. "Emma, I'm sorry for what I did and snapping at you earlier. Act freely, I'm not holding you as a hostage, here."

I didn't answer him and kept a solid look on my face, he sighed before getting out of the room. I sighed and went to sit on the edge of the bed. What the hell was I going to do? I had to get out of here but how? I was certain he was going to keep an eye on me 24/7. Anyway, my one and only option now was not to get on his bad side and to play along on his good one so he wouldn't act the way he just did earlier ever again.

I sighed, I was really in huge need of a shower, and getting out of this orange jumpsuit wasn't really a bad idea, after all. I stood up and walked towards the wardrobe. I was surprised when I opened it, it had everything I might think of. He really planned everything very well. I took some fresh clothes and went to the bathroom. I took a quick shower and put on skinny jeans and a simple t-shirt then I decided to get out of the room and figure out the building I was in.

I wandered around for a little bit before I found Adam coming out from one of the rooms; he smiled when he saw me, and I faked a smile toward him.

"Now, isn't that so much better?" He held me by the waist, I wanted so bad to break his hand but I let the urge go, and smiled instead.

"Come on, I will introduce you to the lads," he said as he started to climb the stairs down, I followed after him.

There were four people sitting in the living room, drinking beer, and bantering with each other. There were three men, two I had seen before and I guessed the third was the driver who got us here; the fourth was the girl I met in prison.

"I'm sure you have already met most of them," Adam started to say. "Anyway, that's Reese, Chris, Paul, and Dahlia."

"Well, we should apologize for drugging you, and bringing you here this way," Reese who was my attacker said, rubbing the back of his neck, and the others nodded in agreement.

"Oh, don't worry about it. It's in the past," I said, forcing out a smile but in fact, I wanted to strangle all of them.

"Emma will be a great asset to our team. She's a professional, and very good with locks," Adam said, holding me by the waist.

"Well, I heard about some of the heists you pulled off. I have to admit, you have a great technique," Chris said, smiling.

I smiled as sat with them, and poured myself a cup of beer. "Thank you, I'm sure we are going to be a great team."

"Welcome to the gang," Dahlia said, raising her cup of beer to cheer me, the rest joined her.

Adam smiled when he saw that I was getting along with them. I sent a flirtatious smile his way, he smirked before he joined us. He drank a cup of beer before grabbing a bottle of Vodka. "What about something stronger?"

They all cheered in excitement and poured themselves cups of Vodka but I shook my head. "I think I will pass, I had enough today." Being sober all the time was definitely the wisest option.

After hours of drinking, they all became drunk and groggy. After a while, they all headed to their rooms. Adam and I were left alone.

"What about joining me in my room tonight?" he slurred.

"Yeah, why not?" I answered, sending him a seductive smile.

He smiled before he started leading the way to his room. Once we were in, Adam abruptly kissed my lips fiercely. I had to kiss him back unwillingly; the smell of alcohol in his breath was about to make me vomit, though.

He broke the kiss after a while and I was thankful for it. "Wait, I have to make a call to make sure that all of the guards are in their places, then I will be back and all yours."

My eyes widened. "What guards?"

"The mansion is surrounded by guards, nothing can go in or out without me knowing about it," he explained with a hint of warning in his tone.

I nodded, and forced a smile toward him, he smiled back and went to make his call. I slapped myself mentally. Of course, the mansion would be surrounded by guards. Now, my plan to escape in the middle of the night while all of them were dead-drunk has vanished. What was I thinking?

Adam came back shortly and to my good luck, he threw his body on the bed and was immediately sleeping deeply; I think he even might have forgotten my presence in the room. I sighed in relief, now I have to think of another way to get myself out of here, what the hell should I do?

I noticed Adam's phone hanging from his hand. I slowly and steadily walked in his direction, and grabbed the phone from his hand cautiously in order not to wake him up, although I really doubted that even a bomb would have been capable of waking him up.

Now, what should I do? And, who should I call for help?

After a while of thinking, I typed Jake's number and decided to send him a text with the situation and my location. After everything that happened between us, he was still the only one I could trust. Also, I really preferred being incarcerated to being here.

I sent the message to him, making sure to tell him not to call back or text this number again, then I deleted the message and every trace of using the phone before I returned it back to Adam's hand. I hope that he wouldn't find out or then, I would be as good as dead.
