Chapter 17
Jake and I have been dating for a few months now, and it has been perfect. He made me happy in a way no one else could, made me feel safe and secure. Being with him could be one of the best things that ever happened to me and also one of the worst. I always had to remind myself of the ugly truth: I was a criminal and he was the FBI agent who was in charge of making sure I ended up in jail as soon as possible.
Eric knew what happened between me and Jake, and that I kind of liked him. He didn't stop fighting and arguing with me about it and accusing me of losing my mind, I couldn't completely disagree with him, though. After all, I fell for the one man who almost arrested me.
Eric was preparing his suitcases because he was traveling to London to visit my parents. I wish I could travel with him but with my new job at the museum, and a certain agent, I couldn't.
"Tell them that I really miss both of them," I told Eric while he was preparing his suitcase.
"I will," he said. "But, you really should have come with me."
"I know, but with the work and Jake, I just can't leave now." I sighed.
He stopped what he was doing and frowned at me. Oh god, I wasn't ready for another lecture. "When will you stop being an idiot?" Eric snapped, frowning and tapping his foot.
"Eric please, this is not the right time for this." I sighed in exhaustion.
"God, Emma. You are digging your own grave, you know that right?" He sighed, looking at me sternly.
I didn't answer him, he was right. I didn't know what I was doing anymore or how to get out of it. I fell for Jake but that could never work out. Everything was just a huge fat lie, and lies never had any future.
"That day, why did you reveal your true identity to Jake?" I asked him in order to change the subject, and because I was curious.
"Honestly, it was just for the challenge. He almost arrested me and I liked to see him standing right there absolutely clueless." He smirked, then he looked at me and his expressions softened a little. He sighed before he said. "Just keep in mind that people like him are the end of people like us."
"I never forgot that, and I know that things between us can never work out. I will have to end up things with him whether I like it or not," I said, and my heart ached.
Eric was right in everything. He was a federal agent and I was a criminal. But, I didn't want to be classified in that category anymore, I didn't want to be a criminal anymore. I just wanted to be a normal girl who fell for a normal guy, why was this so hard?
"Just take care of yourself, Sis," Eric said. He zipped his suitcase, then he walked over to me and placed a soft kiss on my forehead. "I will miss you."
"I will miss you too, Eric." I smiled. "Don't forget to tell Mom and Dad that I said hi."
"I won't," he said, giving me a warm smile.
I gave him one last hug before he left the apartment. Then, I was left alone with my deadly thoughts, but I didn't have a lot of time to think as I heard my phone buzzing. I checked it and found a text from Jake.
'Hey, beautiful. :) I'm having the rest of the day off. Want to hang out and have dinner?'
I smiled while reading his message, and decided that it wasn't a bad idea. I was also having the day off and I had absolutely nothing to do.
'Yeah, sure.'
I received his response a minute later. 'Great, pick you up in 30.'
I sighed and decided to go and get dressed. I decided to go simple so I put on skinny jeans, a gray t-shirt, and a white leather jacket. I also put on some eyeliner and lipstick. Then, I was ready.
Jake arrived shortly after that. I opened the door for him with a smile. "Hey."
"Hey, Em." He gave me a dazzling smile and kissed me on the cheek. "Ready to go?"
"Yeah," I said as we walked together to the elevator.
We got into his car and we started driving to our favorite restaurant but then, Jake received a call.
"Hello. Yes, it's Agent Parker," Jake said through the phone. "Does it have to be now? Fine, I will pick it up on my way."
"Is there something wrong?" I asked, my eyebrows brought together.
"No, nothing wrong. But I have to get something from my office, a case file. Do you mind if we pass by the FBI headquarters on our way?" he asked, and my heart almost skipped a beat.
Wait... What? Me going to the FBI headquarters? Okay, that had never even crossed my wildest dreams.
I swallowed hard before saying. "N-No, it's okay."
"I promise, it won't take long." He smiled.
I plastered a fake smile on my face before I stared out of the window. I was going to the freaking FBI building. Just great!

A few minutes later we were there, in front of the mighty FBI building.
Jake unbuckled his seatbelt before he turned to look at me. "Aren't you coming?"
I cleared my throat before I said. "Can't I just wait for you here?"
"It won't take long, and Luke will be happy to see you," Jake said with a smile.
I sighed before I unbuckled my own seatbelt and got out of the car. Just the thought of stepping inside made me uneasy. Nevertheless, I followed Jake as we entered the building.
Agents and people typing on their computers were everywhere, there were also some agents escorting handcuffed criminals.
Calm down, Emma. You did nothing wrong. At least, not today.
On our way to the elevator, a blonde girl stepped in our way, making us stop in our tracks.
"Hey, Jake," she greeted with a flirtatious smile.
Wait... Did she just flirt with him?
"Um... hey, Grace," Jake said, clearly uneasy.
"I just wanted to say hi," she said, her eyes darting to him.
This bitch was really bothering me. All this time, I was still standing behind Jake, but I didn't wait for him to say any other thing before I got into view. "Oh, hi." I smirked as I stepped right next to Jake.
Her smile faded when she caught my eye and looked at Jake with a raised eyebrow.
"Oh, Grace. This's Emma," Jake said, a smile playing on his lips. "My girlfriend."
Her smile was completely gone, and she gave me intense angry looks.
"Well, it's nice to meet you, Grace," I said, the smirk never leaving my face.
"Likewise," she said bitterly.
Jake cleared his throat. "Well, we are kind of in a hurry. See you later, Grace." He took my hand and led me to the elevator.
I was kind of thankful for what just happened because it distracted me from the fact that we were inside of the FBI building, and it saved me the unnecessary trouble of Jake asking why I was acting weird, but to make things worse, we were now heading to the major theft division floor. But I didn't care, the annoyance that bitch gave me was overwhelming.
Jake had a complacent look on his face. Of course, I knew why he was so self-satisfied.
"You were jealous." He smirked, not able to hold it anymore.
I rolled my eyes at him. "No, I wasn't."
He ignored my comment and continued to smile. "Really? But, I thought it was adorable."
"Stop it, Jake," I said, a bit irritated, and hoping that he would stop with his teasing.
He chuckled a little but didn't say anything, both of us were facing the door of the elevator not looking at each other.
"Oh, you really were jealous," Jake said, a smile playing on his lips as the elevator reached our desired floor and we stepped out.
"You're absurd," I grumbled as I walked next to him to his office.
He chuckled and didn't say anything else. We got to his office, he took some case's file that was on his desk before he turned to me, the smile still not leaving his face. "I have to do something, I will be back in no time," he said, then he came closer and placed a soft kiss on my cheek. "Nobody can ever be compared to you so the reason for your jealousy has no existence." After that, he left the office.
I should have really argued with him but instead, I smiled sheepishly. God, he had so much influence over my emotions. I sighed and sat down on one of the chairs, but then my curiosity got the best of me. I was in Jake's office, after all.
I wandered around the office for a little bit before I noticed a large whiteboard on the side that caught my eye. It was full of maps, charts, pictures, and theories all dedicated to the Metropolitan Museum's heist. It had pictures of Hunter and Declan. It also had plans of how to get to the seller; my brother. But everything on there was supposed to lead him to the most important person in the case; the thief. It was supposed to lead him to me.
I was truly impressed with how much work Jake had put into this case and into catching me. A lot of thoughts were going through my head but it was cut with a knock on the door followed by Luke stepping in.
"I couldn't believe him when he said you were here," Luke said happily as he entered the office.
"Oh, hi Luke," I said, forcing out a smile.
"Hey, Emma." He gave me a gentle hug, then he noticed that I was standing in front of the whiteboard. "Oh, that case caught your attention, too. He really worked very hard on this case, but the thief was really good and every time we get a new lead, something wrong happens."
I swallowed hard and looked at the whiteboard again.
"Jake is a very good agent. This case was a true challenge to him. He took it personally because everything he was doing seemed to fail." Luke sighed before he continued. "I was really thinking that this case will drive him insane until you came into his life."
"Me?" I asked in confusion.
"Yeah." He smiled. "He really likes you, you know."
I was caught off guard, I really liked him too, but I was also the reason for his misery and the troubles he had with this case. Guilt pinched my gut; not because of the heist but because of what I did to Jake. I lied; I manipulated and used him. I wish I had left earlier, I wish neither of us fell for the other. Now if I left or if he knew the truth, both of our hearts would be scarred forever.
"You okay?" Luke asked with concern.
I was about to say something but then Jake stepped in. "Ready to go, Em?"
"Y-Yeah," I said, forcing out a slight smile, then I turned to Luke who was still giving me a wary look. "It was nice seeing you again, Luke. Tell Chloe I said hi."
"I will," he said, slightly smiling.
I left with Jake and we were now going to have dinner. I couldn't think straight the whole time; there were lots of thoughts going through my mind.
Sometimes, I imagined what would have happened if I met Jake in different circumstances. If I were just a normal girl; a model citizen who didn't break any laws. We would have been the perfect pair. But unfortunately, this was the version of reality in which he was the law and I was the one who broke it.
