Chapter 15
We arrived at the party; it was full of people and I really felt out of place. Jake stopped almost every second to greet different people and to make things worse, most of them were FBI agents. At least, they weren't armed today.
I sighed and walked silently next to him. I saw a guy waving and coming toward us. Jake's smile grew when he noticed him, I guessed that was his friend.
"Hello, there," he greeted happily as he looked at me with a dashing smile before he continued. "Oh, you must be Emma."
"I am," I said with a smile and I looked at Jake with a bit of confusion.
Jake chuckled before he introduced him to me. "Emma this is Luke, my best friend and the man of the night."
My smile grew as I shook hands with him and congratulated him on the engagement.
"Thanks," he said with the same smile. Then he looked at Jake. "Well, you had every right to be obsessed with her, Jake. I can't blame you."
My smile turned into a little smirk and I felt my cheeks burning with redness. Jake elbowed him in the shoulder.
"Ouch, What? It's the truth," Luke said playfully while rubbing his shoulders.
"As you see, Em. My best friend is really funny," Jake said between gritted teeth, looking at Luke. Then he seemed to remember something. "Oh right, where's Chloe?"
"She was with some friends, I will go find her." Luke went to look for his fiancé.
The word obsessed hit me again, what did Luke mean? Anyway, I didn't dare to mention it.
"He seems very lighthearted," I said with a smile.
"Yeah, absolutely," Jake said, sarcastically. And before we could say anything else, a blonde girl with large brown chocolate eyes and a dazzling smile came into view followed by Luke behind her. Jake's smile grew once he saw her, and he gave her a hug.
"Congratulations, Chloe," Jake said to her. "I pity you though, for choosing a guy like Luke."
Luke glared at Jake and Chloe chuckled. "Hey, I'm the only one allowed to poke fun at him today."
"I will suit myself, I promise." Jake laughed, then he looked at me. "Chloe, this is Emma."
She smiled at me and I extended my hands to her, but she ignored it and gave me a bone-crushing hug. I couldn't help but hug her back, she seemed very sweet.
"I wanted to meet you sooner, but that jerk refused," she said, referring to Jake. Yeah, apparently, he talked about me a lot in front of them.
"Well, here I am." I chuckled. "Congratulations on the engagement."
"Thank you, Em." She gave me a warm smile.
We chatted with Luke and Chloe for a while, but they had to leave to greet other guests. Now, it was just Jake and me.
"Here," Jake said, handing me a glass of Champagne.
"Thank you." I smiled. "Your friends are so sweet."
"Yeah," Jake agreed. "They liked you a lot, too."
I smiled at him then we were silent for a couple of moments before I spoke. "So, how did the mission you told me about go?"
Jake's smile dropped a fraction and he cleared his throat before he spoke up. "Unfortunately, it failed. The guy didn't show up."
"Oh," I said, trying my best to show that I really felt bad for him.
"This case is driving me insane." Jake sighed, sadly. "No matter how much I figured out or worked on, they seem to be a step ahead of me."
I couldn't believe that I was saying that, but I kind of felt bad for him. I slapped my forehead mentally. What the hell was wrong with you, Emma? He was so close to arresting you and your brother.
"So, what are you planning to do about it?" I asked him, pushing all my thoughts away.
"Nothing, for now. My boss wants me to leave it as it is until new evidence is found, and start working on other cases," Jake said, looking disappointed.
Great, they were starting to lose hope in this case and I believe that no evidence was going to show up. Declan didn't know Eric's identity and Hunter left the country. I could finish this thing really soon. Finally, I can leave him...
Something ached in my heart at the last part. Did I really want to leave Jake? Of Course, I did. This was what I wanted since the beginning. But now, I felt like something has changed. No, I could never be attached to him. Never. I repeated in my head.
"So, Emma," Jake started and I looked at him with interest waiting for him to continue. "That day when you called, I sensed that there was something wrong with you."
A shiver went down my spine when he mentioned that day. Of course, something was wrong with me. You were going to arrest my brother, that was all.
"Um, I think I was just really tired that day, nothing more," I lied, he didn't seem very convinced so I decided to change the subject quickly. "By the way, I guess you working on other cases isn't a bad idea."
"Yeah, for now." Jake sighed and didn't add anything else.
We drank our Champagne in silence for a couple of minutes. After that, Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran started playing.
"Oh, I really love this song," I said, enthusiastically.
"Would you like to dance?" Jake asked, smiling, and extending his hand to me.
"Sure," I said as I put my hand in his and we went to where the people were dancing.
He swung me around and my hands automatically fell on his shoulders. I was surprised a little. "You seem like a good dancer," I told him.
He smiled that amazing smile of his and then he took one of my hands in his and spun me; my hands fit perfectly in his. We moved in harmonization with the song. The movement overcame me and my surroundings faded a little, all I could think about was his deep ocean blue eyes and his hands holding mine. Then, he pulled me close and his face was inches from my own. It was a timeless moment; I didn't want it to end.
But unfortunately, the song came to an end, and we had to break it or else, it would have been very embarrassing in front of all those people around us.
"That was..." I started to say, but I paused, trying to find the right word.
"Amazing," Jake completed with a smile.
"Yeah." I smiled at him. "It was amazing."
We stayed for a couple more hours before we said our goodbyes to Luke and Chloe and congratulated them again. Then, we left together, and now we were in Jake's car.
"I had so much fun today," I said, smiling at Jake.
"Yeah, me too." Jake shared the same smile with me.
I stared out of the window a little before I realized that we weren't heading toward my home.
"Hey, Jake. Where are we going?" I asked him, confusedly.
"You will see," he said with a smirk.
"Come on, tell me," I urged.
"Nope," he said, popping out the p. "You have to wait."
I sighed and got back to staring out of the window, giving in to the fact that he wouldn't tell me. He just laughed at my reaction.
After fifteen more minutes of New York's dreadful traffic, Jake parked the car in front of the Empire State building.
"The Empire State?" I raised an eyebrow at him.
"Yeah," he said as he unfastened his seatbelt. Then he came and opened the car door for me and smirked before asking. "Are you coming or not?"
I groaned a little before I unfastened my own seatbelt and got out of the car. We walked together and got into the building. Jake spoke to a man there, then he came back and we started making our way to the elevator. To my surprise, Jake clicked on the 103-floor's button which was the last floor; it was a private floor for special occasions like engagements and weddings.
"The floor is empty now, it's going to be only for us," Jake said with a smile.
"How are we even allowed to be here?" I asked him in confusion.
"Never underestimate an FBI agent." Jake winked at me with a smirk, and I couldn't help but laugh. So, he did break some rules sometimes, after all.
We made it to the 103-floor, we got out of the elevator and went straight towards the fence, the view of the crowded streets of New York City from up above was breathtaking; I felt like being on top of the world.
"Wow, it looks amazing from here," I said in awe, admiring the amazing view.
"I know," he said with a smile.
"I really should have never underestimated you, Mr. FBI Agent. You're definitely full of surprises." I chuckled, looking at him, but I found him already staring at me with a dazzling smile on his face.
"What?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at him.
He smiled and shook his head before he said. "Nothing."
"So, do you come here a lot?" I asked him, changing the subject.
"Whenever I want to enjoy such a view. But today, believe me, it's not the view I care about," Jake said, looking at me in the eye. I smiled genuinely, something about Jake really made me melt.
A breath of air tickled my face and cheeks and it made Jake's messy hair fall on his face which made him look much more irresistible. Our eyes connected and we stared into each other's eyes for a good couple of seconds. His eyes looked amazing and the blue in them was drawing me in just like what happened on the bow bridge, but this time my desire was so strong to resist.
And out of the blue, we closed the gap that was between us and our bodies connected. Jake's eyes glanced at my lips and then returned to my eyes; it was like Deja Vu all over again, but the difference this time was that I didn't stop him. I nodded my head which was a sign of confirmation. He smiled a little before moving his face closer and closer without letting his eyes leave mine, and then, he was kissing me.
My eyes closed automatically and I got totally lost in the feeling of his lips fondling mine. All of our surroundings disappeared, I couldn't hear the hustle and the bustle of New York City's busy streets anymore; all I could hear was the beating of my heart, which was doing melodies with his. Our lips moved in perfect synchronization like we have been doing it for years; it was so soft and passionate. His hands were wrapped around my waist and mine were wrapped around his neck. After a while, it was getting really hard to breathe and both of our bodies demanded oxygen so we pulled away and both of us started taking deep breaths. Jake's eyes returned back to mine with a smile on his lips that were now stained with some of my lipstick. A part of me couldn't believe what just happened and was screaming at me for letting it happen; the other part was dancing in happiness with a lot of butterflies in my stomach.
I smiled and let the other part take complete control of me. I was feeling a lot of things toward Jake, but hate and fear weren't on the list anymore. I didn't have any idea what I was doing anymore or what I really just got myself into. I just knew one thing for sure, I didn't regret it and hell yeah, I wanted to do it again and again till the end of time.
