Sneaking around
She picked up the pace, floating into the main room.
Their room was decorated with pretty little trinkets, little collectables from gold plated jewellery boxes to silver walking canes.
None of which they needed. Spending their money in the wrong way, we'll, what they had of it. The rest, Althea knew, that they stole.
She made her way over to the dresser, eyes taking in the sight of the jewellery box.
"Let's hope this is the last time I have to sneak in here." She whispered to herself, opening the box.
Thousands of dollars worth of jewellery came from passers by, or people who were lost, and looking for shelter. Althea didn't know why the woman collected things like this, especially when they lived in a shabby house in the middle of nowhere, why not buy a mansion.
There was no logic behind it, but this wasn't really the time to be discussing this.
She dug around through the box, looking at each of the necklaces, with her stomach dropping at every one she put back.
"No, no, no, no!" She whispered, "it's not here!"
"You really think I'd leave it lying around?" The malicious feminine voice calls from behind her.
Nails duh into her flesh as she was dragged closer to the woman. The scent of alcohol clung to her breath.
No surprise there.
"Mother!" Althea shouted, trying to rip her hand from her mother's grip.
The woman snarled, "don't call me that." She dragged the girl into the kitchen with an in grip on her wrist. "Useless child! You might as well have no hands!"
Strands of grey, greasy hair fell in front of her face as she grabbed her carving knife, "NO!" She screamed! "NOT AGAIN, PLEASE NO!" She brought the knife down, ain't for the girls hand, but she pulled it away.
A glint of silver caught her eye, originating from the woman's chest.
She had it.
Around her neck, there was a silver chain, with an infinity symbol connected to it. "You have it?!" She gasped, managing to rip her right hand free, and sent the knife flying with her left hand.
The woman flared, "I told you, you could have it when you actually stole something, but no, miss Goodie-Two-Shoes won't use her powers to help her family." She glared, "useless."
Althea raised an eyebrow, "So, now I'm your family? What happened to 'don't call you mother?'"
She only flared, calling out for her husband, "Malcum! Get in here, she's being defiant again!"
Heavy foot steps barrelled their way into the room, and Althea's stomach tightened. "Amaras, what's she doing now?" He growled, tapping his gun on the ground.
"She was looking for my necklace."
"What do you want with my necklace anyway! It's mine by birth right!"
She just scoffed, "please, your parents left you on our doorstep. Everything you have is mine."
Althea sighed, knowing this is the most stereotypical line her mother could have said. All superheroes have heard this at one stage or another.
"No." She growled, "you're wrong."
Malcum raised his gun pointing it at the girl, "don't you even think about you useless piece of..."
She was done. She couldn't take this anymore.
She reached out, grabbing the necklace from around her 'mothers' neck. "Don't finish that sentence." She said glaring over her shoulder at Malcum.
Malcum cocked the shot gun, and Althea's stomach sank even lower, "let go."
In a small burst of confidence, she smirked, "good luck."
Then the wind picked up.
