Chapter 63: After the War
Everything was calm in the garden. The wind would blow gently every few minutes and blow against the roses making them swing in one direction before returning to their upright slumped position. You sat on the fountain in the garden looking at the flowers. Elina and Nikoli had duties to fulfill so they were stuck in meetings for most of the day. You however had nothing to do. You were a guest at the palace and Elina said you could stay there forever if you would like. You thought of traveling and seeing the world with the money you had, but you didn't want to leave Elina yet. She seemed to want you to stay and make sure you were both mentally okay.
" My lady, what are you doing out here? "
You turned your head to see Sam entering the garden. His gaze looked around the garden before settling on you. He walked closer and stood near you. One thing that you noticed, was that Sam always kept one hand on the hilt of his sword in case he needed to pull it out of the holder strapped to his hip. You found that he was very cautious and he didn't want to leave room for anyone to harm someone.
" I'm just thinking. Thinking about how it all came to this. "
" It has been a long and sad journey for you to get here. "
" It has. I lost. . .everyone I knew and loved except for Elina. Everyone else is gone. "
" But you are free. No binds hold you anymore. No king can force you to stay in Madrahia. You are free to do as you wish. "
" I know, but I still miss them. "
" Even though it has been a year, you will always miss them. They were your allies, friends, and one was your lover. You will always have them in your memories and in your heart, even if they are not physically here, they will always be here. All you can do is continue to live your life how you want and in memory of those you lost. "
" What do you mean by, 'in memory'? "
" Someone has to live and tell the tale of The Mad King in Madrathia. And that someone is you because you were there for the whole story and lived through it. As the story travels around it's bound to get twisted and there will be some parts of the story that are told wrong, but you will be able to know the true story of what happened and correct those who are wrong. "
" What if I don't want to? "
" Then you don't have to. I'm just saying a name has power and if you step up and show the world what the real story is, then they will remember, but only if someone steps up and tells it exactly what happened. "
You nodded and continued to look at the flowers that were growing in the garden. There were multiple colors and not one was left out of the garden. They pushed and were pulled against the wind but they went right back to their spot like they had never been disturbed in the first place.
" When will you leave to start your travels? "
" I'm not sure. I guess whenever I'm ready. "
" You mean whenever Queen Elina is ready? "
" Yes, I'm planning a month, but I am not sure. I'm going to tell her my plans so she won't have to worry about me. I'll come back and visit but I want to get away from Madrathia for a while. Maybe find a place where I can call home and look at the stars like I used to. "
" That's a relaxing plan. Do you have a destination in mind? "
" Maybe Helena. It's cold up there and it snows a lot. "
" So, you want to live in the cold? "
" It's a change of scenery. Plus I can snuggle with my blankets to keep warm. "
" I see. " Sam said in a sad tone.
You stood up from the fountain and dusted your clothes off from any dust that got on the fabrics. You faced Sam and saw a sad look on his face that he was trying to hide.
" Are you going to miss me? "
" I will, my lady. Believe it or not, you are my only friend besides King Nikoli and Queen Elina. "
" Because you opened up to me. You were honest and opened yourself up for me to become your friend. You helped me as well when Jin passed away. You always made sure that I ate, slept, and I never got dehydrated. "
" Yes, I felt that it was my duty to help you, seeing as I have gone through the same experience. "
" Well, thank you, Sam. I really appreciate it and I consider you one of my closest friends for that. And you can join me on my travels if you wish."
" Anything for you, my lady. "
" Shall we go inside? I hear the bakers have some desserts they would like people to taste test. Care to join me? "
" It would be my pleasure. "
You walked beside Sam towards the exit of the garden. The trees that were at the exit covered your heads from the sun that was behind you. You didn't watch your footing however and tripped over one of the branches that settled on the top of the soil. You could feel yourself falling and you had your hands placed in front of you so you could push yourself off the ground before you hit it. But Sam stopped you from falling by using his free hand to hook around your waist. His other hand was still on the hilt of his sword, so he held you up with one hand. You looked up at him and saw that his eyes were open with surprise. To you, it felt like time had stopped for a moment before Sam pulled you to stand upright. When you were standing again Sam let go of your waist and stepped back to give you room.
" Are you alright my lady? "
" I'm fine. I didn't see that tree root. "
Sam only nodded and you turned to continue walking inside. Sam stood by your side, waiting for you to take a step forward. After taking a deep breath and letting it out you looked towards Sam.
" Let's go see if we can taste test some of those desserts the baker made. "
" Yes, my lady. But please be more careful. "
You nodded and walked inside with Sam walking beside you. You knew what Sam said at the fountain was true, that no king was holding you to Madrathia anymore and you were free. It made you feel happier and lighter in your heart. After Quinn had gone mad and referenced the stars you couldn't look at them the same way that you used to, but when you remembered your father's words, it brought light to the situation. It brought light to the fact that your name was only going to be in the stars if you put it there. If you had created a story and turned it into one constellation. And that was the story of The Mad King in Madrathia. It's in the stars until the end of time with your name written on it. It was now a part of history. You smiled to yourself thinking about how you wouldn't be able to forget the story because you would remember it every time you looked at the stars. Though it was a sad story there were still memories that were good, and those were the memories you would think about when you looked at the night sky again.
' It's in the stars now. '
The End
