Chapter 35: The Return
It was hot in the cell. The heat from the outside world made its way inside the cell, and it bounced off of the walls and floor making it hot. You didn't want to be there, and you especially didn't want to be held against your will. You wanted to be free. But it just didn't seem to be in the cards for you.
You knew that Quinn was changing the castle. You had seen maids and butlers changing the walls and the color of red and gold being stripped from the castle. Quartz would line the walls with black and silver accents. It was beautiful but it reminded you that the king had fallen only for him to retake the throne through his son. The sun was always high in the sky and sometimes there would be a breeze and it would cool you off, but it wasn't enough.
No one would come and visit you, and if Elina had sent you letters you didn't receive them. You heard nothing about Genevieve and you worried for her health. All you could really see was through the small window on the door, and even then the space was still wrapping around you. You didn't like any of this, and you knew Quinn had lost it and gone insane. He had lost himself to something else.
It was night now, and your torches, in the cell, were still lit. You sat on the bed and stared at the desk, thinking of maybe writing something. No creation came to mind and you lost any feeling to write.
' This is awful. '
Your eyes studied the grains on the desk and followed the wood lines. You were bored and left with nothing to do. There were no books, and there was nothing to bake or cook. There was only the desk with paper and a small window to stare out of.
" Y/n. "
You looked up and towards the window. Aileen was standing at the door and you could see her head through the window. Aileen was allowed to come to see you every now and again, but she was never allowed in. She didn't have the key to open the door. You stood from your bed and walked to the door.
" Hey, Aileen. How is everything out there? "
" It's not bad. Quinn is doing great as a king, but everyone still fears him like they did Francis. Especially when you are locked up here. "
" I see, what about you? How are you doing? "
" I'm not doing well. I...I don't recognize my son anymore and my daughter has never been so quiet. She stays in her room in fear of her brother. My husband is gone and I now am looking for the time of day to leave. "
" Do you have tickets or money to get out? I know you said you wanted to live near the Prosan Empire so you could be near Elina. It takes a lot of coins to get there. "
" That's what I wanted to talk to you about. "
Aileen leaned her head back and looked around the hall and saw no one. She looked back in the cell and pressed her head close to the bars.
" I'm going to get you out of here. "
" How? "
" Jin is back, and he's going to help me. "
" Jin? "
" Speaking of which, get over here. "
Aileen left the window and Jin appeared. His dark blue eyes gazed into the cell and his face contained a smile. He reached his hands through the bars and held your face between his palms.
" Y/n, I'm glad you're okay. When I got back I heard about everything that happened. I'm sorry I was away for so long. I didn't want to be. "
" Jin..."
( Flashback )
" And he was taken away and probably disciplined further to the point that he would never defy him again. You know how harsh the king is, and it's not fitting for the kingdom. His son won't help us so we need to do this ourselves. Join us. "
" No, I won't. "
" Do you have a love? Someone, you want to protect? "
" Yes. "
" Then, save her from this disaster of a kingdom. We know that our situation is bad and that the kingdom isn't going anywhere but down. So, why not join us and make this kingdom a better place for her and your kin. "
It was silent for a moment and then the man with the knife let go. He put his knife away and held his hand out. The man who was attacked shook his hand and stamped a seal on the back of his hand. He put the stamp seal away in his jacket.
" Thank you. "
( Flashback Over )
" Jin...you joined the rebellion. "
" How do you-Don't worry about that right now. Right now let's worried about getting you out of here. "
" Jin, why did you-"
" Because I want to protect you. The rebellion wanted to over through the king because of how he acted, and now that he's gone they don't need me. They're waiting to see how Quinn will lead Madrathia. If they see it as unfit they'll call me again, but right now I'm free of the rebellion. "
" But you can't be here. Aileen, didn't you tell him why I'm here? "
" I did. But listen to him Y/n. " Aileen said.
" Y/n, I'm never leaving you again. I'm going to stay by your side. I've talked with Aileen and she's relieved me of duty before Quinn was crowned. I am free from not only the rebellion but the control of the royals. I'm going to get you out of here and then we can escape together. "
" But how are you going to get me out? Only Quinn has the key. "
" That's the thing I'm not sure of. I need to think of something and until I do I'll visit you every night okay? "
" Okay, but please figure something out soon. "
" I will, I will. "
Jin caressed your face once more before letting you go and slipping his hands back through the bars.
" I love you. "
" I love you too. "
Aileen wished you goodbye and the two left through the darkness. You walked back to your bed and sat on the sheets. A plan was starting to form in your head of what you could do to escape. One option came to mind but it was something you would never do.
