Chapter 5
As Dewey made his way home, he looked around the streets once more, everything seemed darker and scarier. He whimpered as he heard something fall in an alley to his left. When he heard something fall behind him, he screamed and bent down to the floor, hiding in his arms.
"Y-you can do this Dewey, come on." He encouraged himself. He stood up and took a deep breath. Another sound was heard that frightened the duckling even more. "I-I can't, I can't." Dewey hid his face in his hands. "I'm scared."
"Dewey!?" A voice called out. Dewey jumped at his name being called.
"Dewey!?" Another voice yelled. Dewey turned towards the voice and saw his brothers and uncles on the street.
"Huey, Louie." He managed to say as he stood and ran over to them.
"Dewey! Where have you been? We've been so worried." Huey held Dewey close.
"Seriously, you had me worried too." Louie admitted.
"Really? Well I-"
"Dewey!" Donald yelled. "Where were you!?" The middle triplet looked down at the ground. "Dewey!?"
"C-can we just, go home?" Dewey asked. Scrooge placed a hand on Donald's shoulder and nodded.
"Go easy on the lad Donald." Donald sighed.
"Alright, let's go home."
Once back at the manor, Dewey was seated I the same chair, in the same room as the one earlier that evening, Huey and Louoe standing at his sides.
"Why did you run away Dewey?" Donald asked.
"I, I-I....." Dewey looked down at the ground.
"Why did you run away from us Dew, we just wanted to help?" Huey stated.
"I-I......" Tears found their way to the duckling's eyes.
"Why did you leave!?" Everyone asked at once.
"Enough!" Dewey yelled. "Enough.....I, ran away because, I was upset."
"That's not a good rea-" Huey shook his head at Louie.
"I, I'm always treated differently! Like all I want is attention.....but! B-but, that's not true! I just want to be seen like Huey and Louie, they get the love, they get the praise, they get the attention, and I get nothing! I just want to be loved, to get praised, to get noticed. I don't want to be selfish, or rude, or mean in any way, but, I get lonely, I'm always alone when we're not on adventures. I just want attention......a good amount of it, I want to be remembered." Huey hugged his brother.
"Dewey, we do love you, we praise you when necessary, we do notice and give you attention.....you just hide every time we do." He explained. Donald watched as his nephew talked things out between each other. Maybe he hadn't given Dewey enough of his time when he was growing up, maybe he had played too much attention to Huey and Louie and left Dewey alone.
"Dewey, I'm sorry you feel that way." Donald started. "I tried giving you as much attention as I could when I was raising you, but I guess I just gave you case of middle child syndrome, huh?" Dewey looked down, he agreed with his uncle, and felt bad that he did, but he nodded lightly.
"I tried too hard, I just wanted some attention and love.....b-but I guess I was too dumb to realize that I already had everything I needed." Dewey sobbed.
"It's okay Dew, you don't have to cry." Huey wiped the tears away softly and smiled at his brother, Dewey smiled back. Louie stood there, off to the side, before getting pulled into a hug by Dewey. Louie hugged back, enjoying the warmth from his older brothers. Dewey smiled lightly at the hug that they were sharing and closed his eyes lightly.
"I hope you guys know, that I'll always love you.....even, if you get more attention, but....
It's Hard Being The Middle Sibling."
