It's Complicated...
Thanks so much to MoonMade for the cover! I absolutely love it!
Growing up with werewolves teaches you that you need to listen. There's nothing worse than a wolf that thinks you're disrespectful of him.
I walked into the kitchen with my eyes down. They're all very grumpy in the morning. It was only 7, so most of the guys were still asleep. I ate my cereal without interruption for once.
I was reading the newspaper with the spoon still in my mouth. I finished the article and got up, crashing right into Grayson. How could my luck be so bad, that I run into the most hot-tempered member of the pack? I tried to smile, but that didn't work. Why was he constantly annoyed with my presence? Because he was my "boyfriend".
In order to keep boys away from me, Conner--my overprotective big brother--picked Grayson to play boyfriend. Grayson has hated me ever since. He probably wanted someone prettier than me. Grayson was nice to me at school and more than made up for that at home. Everyone at school thinks we're just neighbors, but they don't know that it's all just one big house.
The house is huge. The school thinks that it is two houses in one, like a duplex. It isn't, but to keep us 'normal' we pretend.
"Be ready in an hour. I need to get to school early."
"'kay."
I washed my bowl and put it on the dish rack to dry. Grayson handed me the cup that he used for his protein shake. I sighed lightly and took it. After washing it, I made my way to my room. I took a quick shower and started on my make-up. I'm a very girly-girl. I like dresses, make-up, doing my hair and shopping. It took me an hour just to finish my hair and make-up. I was in my closet picking out my clothes when Grayson came barging in.
I covered myself with a robe. Just because they felt comfortable walking around the house in nothing, doesn't mean I had to be.
"You better be dressed and ready."
"Almost" I hollered.
"I need to leave... now."
I sighed, "Give me two minutes and I'll be ready to go."
I heard him groan and fall onto my bed. I smiled, I won. I quickly picked out shorts and a baby doll top. I hurried with my heels and grabbed my book bag on my way out of the closet.
"There. I'm ready."
"Finally." He hopped off the bed and walked to his car. I had to jog to keep up with him.
It's supposed to be a very hot day. I reapplied my lip-gloss on the way to school. Grayson just shook his head.
"Why do you waste your time with all that shit on your face?" Brian, my only real friend in the pack, asked.
I looked back at him over my shoulder, "Because if I didn't I'd look just as bad as you."
He smirked. I looked at Grayson; he was glaring into the rearview mirror. I rolled my eyes. Werewolves are very possessive and aggressive around me. Whoever happens to be the more dominate of the wolves has control over me. Usually it's Conner, but now, in this car, it was Grayson.
"Don't flirt your pretty face off today Casey." Grayson said spitefully.
I rolled my eyes. "I didn't ask him to make you pretend to be my boyfriend Grayson." He jerked his head towards me. "You don't want to either, so stop pretending you care."
I heard a little growl as he turned his attention to the road. This was the only place I was allowed to backtalk, in public. My heart was racing; I knew they could hear it. Today, I would pretend to be having a fight with Grayson, I decided. When the car stopped, I slammed the car door and walked away from him quickly. I went to the library. I had a paper to write. Brian walked in and sat across the table from me.
I didn't look up at him. We sat there quietly until the warning bell rang. He helped me pack my bag, then held the library door open for me before I made my way to class. I sat next to Becky, like usual. She smiled at me.
"So did you guys go out Friday?"
I looked at her confused.
"Gray said he was taking you somewhere special for your 6 month anniversary."
"Oh yea. We went to some seafood restaurant."
"Then?"
"Becky. I'm not going to tell you every detail."
She shook her head, "You have a duty to us women. You are currently going out with Grayson Meyers. You must tell us about the man who most of us dream about. I mean, he's on the football team. He must look great without a shirt on."
I sighed and ran my hand through my hair.
"Can I spend the night at your house tonight?"
I laughed, "Why? It's Monday."
She shrugged, "I've been fighting with my mother. She's being a total bitch. I need somewhere to crash."
I sighed, "I'll call my brother at lunch."
She smiled and hugged me, "Thanks Casey."
I nodded as the tardy bell rang.
"And you'll be telling me all about it tonight."
I sighed overdramatically.
"Give me a break Casey."
I smiled and looked at the front of the class. Halfway through class, Becky jerked her head in my direction. I slowly looked at her. Her eyes were wide.
"We need to go swimming!" she said a bit too loudly.
The teacher cleared his throat.
She smiled weakly at him, "Sorry."
Then she looked at me and nodded. I just shrugged. After class Becky took off. She's very…weird. I sighed and went to my locker. I put all my books in and then locked it. Grayson was standing there when I closed it. I was used to people coming out of nowhere, so I didn't flinch very often. He took my hand and started walking to the locker rooms.
We both had P.E. for our next class. I could feel the glares from other girls. Good thing I couldn't hear what they were thinking.
I looked up at him, "So what am I supposed to tell Becky about Friday night?"
He looked at me like I was stupid.
I rolled my eyes, "She said you were supposed to take me somewhere for our anniversary."
He looked ahead, thinking, then finally said "Make it up."
I sighed, "You're not very helpful."
He shrugged and turned to face me. "See you in class." Then he made me kiss him.
I hate P.E. We happened to be doing basketball. I took my time getting onto the courts. I've never been good at any sport. I wasn’t completely horrible to the point where I’d make a fool of myself.
Carlos, Chris, Eddie, Jack, Mason, Grayson and Brian were already playing. I smiled when I saw Jason playing with them. They wouldn't be so rough with Jason there. My only hope was that Jason would be on the skins team. I sat on my place on the ground as the teacher took attendance.
"Go play guys. If I see you stop, its 5 laps around the courtyard."
That's a lap over a mile. I heard groans from all my classmates. I was with my group of friends for our games. I liked to play basketball with the guys because they can pick me up and throw me in the pool, and they get really mad at each other when someone bumps me a little too hard. I may be the weakest, most annoying person in their lives, but they considered me family.
I fell down at least 4 times and I jammed my index finger to the point it wouldn't bend anymore. Then the teacher made us play the other group of girls. I sighed. They weren't my friends. They were always looking for a reason to kill me. Partially because Jessica has had a crush on Grayson since 4th grade.
We were being civil and playing a clean game.
That was, until I felt a basketball hit me on the back of my neck. I turned around and looked at the guilty party. Jessica was laughing her ass off. I threw it back at her unsuspecting body and she fell on her ass.
"Do that again, bitch." She challenged.
I walked up to her, "Then give me back the ball."
She pushed me. I pushed her back. Living with so many guys mean I was used to being in fights, even if they weren’t serious you still get bruises if you don’t protect yourself. I managed to dodge her punch and then get pulled away by none other than Grayson, but not before feeling her nails scratch my arm.
"You're lucky your boyfriend's here you little bitch!"
I struggled to get out of his sweaty, strong grip. It was no use.
"Knock it off Casey."
I pushed him away. There were a bunch of "oh's" coming from the crowd. They were waiting for us to fight. I wanted to, but it wasn't worth it. I started walking back to the locker rooms. A rock hit my head. I turned around and saw Grayson glaring at Jessica. I picked it up off the ground and threw it back at her. Grayson caught it before it reached her.
I put my hands on my hips and raised an eyebrow at him.
"What the fuck, Grayson."
He rolled his eyes, "You can't be picking fights here."
I looked at all the people. We had an audience.
"I didn't start shit. Jessica did. And since you apparently would love protecting her, maybe you should. I'll walk home."
Some of the guys were laughing, some girls looked surprised, others happy.
"Get back over here."
I shook my head and showed him my lovely middle finger as I walked away. I heard him catch up to me quickly.
"You're bleeding darling."
"Get the fuck away from me."
He sighed, "You're not making this easy."
I stopped and looked at him.
"Look at my arm, it's your fault she did this to me."
"How is that my fault?"
"When you pulled me away I couldn't see her and she took advantage of it."
It was starting to sting, the adrenaline lessening.
I looked at my arm. There were 3 long scratches. I sighed. In some places the scratches were deep.
"Let's get you to the nurse's office."
I nodded. He started walking with me.
"I can walk myself."
"Casey."
"Why can't you take your exit gracefully?"
He chuckled, "You think you can break up with me that easily?"
I nodded, "I thought you'd be overjoyed to have the opportunity to dump me."
He shook his head, "Have you forgotten our prom plans?"
I rolled my eyes. "Go with Jessica. She's dying to fuck you."
He looked over his shoulder, "The one who was picking on you?"
I pushed him away, "God, you're a dick."
He shrugged, "You seem to forget who you're talking to."
One of the five campus cops walked up to us.
"We need to get you to the office. You need to cover up your wound before you catch something you don't want." He looked over at Grayson. "You can go back to class son."
I smirked at him. Ha ha.
Grayson walked back to the basketball courts.
"I can walk myself."
He nodded, "Straight to the office."
I nodded and he walked over to the basketball court.
