And My Thoughts Drift to You
After being yelled at by Saloni for his stupidity and then getting the hotel's address, Rehaan found himself staring at the brown door of the hotel room.
He knocked on it, pushing all the thoughts of the past. The two weren't committed to anyone anymore. They deserved their happy ending, or at least a chance to talk.
Ahaana opened the door and looked at him in shock.
"Rehaan, what are you doing here?"
"No, I don't think us was a mistake," He said and looked at her, pleading with her to understand what he meant. She looked at him in shock as the meaning dawned on her and threw herself on him, her lips on his.
He kissed her, tasting the wine that she might have just had and sucking at her lower lip. He cradled her head, as she walked on her toes to match his height, his body almost covering her petite body. The two walked into the room without breaking the kiss. They reached her bed and broke the kiss.
"I love you," He whispered against her lips, and she kissed his lips, her hands undoing his shirt's button. He broke the kiss when her fingers brushed against his exposed chest.
"We should talk before we do this," He said, and when he looked in her eyes, he regretted his words. But then, to his surprise, Ahaana smiled.
"Main bhi tumhara imtehaan le rahi thi, Suraj, aur mujhe khushi hai ji tum kamyaab hue," She said in a high-pitched voice, confusing him.
"Is this from some tacky Bollywood movie?" He asked after realizing, and she laughed at her joke. He rolled his eyes, but smiled at her childishness.
"Seriously, can we talk?" He asked, moving away from her, and she nodded.
"I tried to, you know, hook up or have a relationship, but I couldn't. Each time I got close to someone, I thought of you, and I felt as if I am betraying you and him," Ahaana said as she walked to the couch. She sat, and he sat on the floor, at his knees.
"I think of how messed up our equations were and keep wondering that if you weren't married to AM, would our situation be different. Because I know I have been in love with you, maybe since before your marriage," He said and looked at her, as she gasped in shock.
"You loved me since then? Was it why you tried to mess up Anant and my relationship?"
He looked at her, hurt at the accusation.
"No! I pushed away all my feelings for you the day you two got married. I just felt that you were like your mother, you were like Laila," He stopped, not wanting to offend her further.
"A gold digger and opportunist?" She supplied, and he looked at the floor, ashamed.
"I think I am like her," She said after a few seconds of awkward silence.
"Like her, I wrecked my marriage with my decisions. But unlike her, I would do everything in my power to make it right for Anant, his kids, and you. I cannot forgive myself for hurting everyone."
" I am sorry for bringing her up. I was rash at judging you, and it created a cascade of disasters. My loyalty for AM was the reason why your marriage took a hit, but my love for you was what broke it. When I found out you took antidepressants, I couldn't stop myself from helping you. I felt responsible for my actions and you. I know it's unhealthy, but at that moment, all that mattered was you,"
"And I thought I was alone. I just wanted to be held and told that I have someone, and you did it all without rubbing it in my face." She said, tears trickling down her cheeks.
"I would never leave you alone unless that's what you want," He said and touched his forehead to hers. She cupped his cheek and kissed him.
As the night progressed, the two recounted their life in the past three years. Ahaana told him about a puppy that she had adopted back in London, and he told her about his and Neha's misadventures at the office. He told her about Arjun, and they decided that once she finished her work in Chennai, they would go to see him and Saloni.
Somewhere around 12.30 am, when Rehaan was in the middle of recounting the story about Arjun's first steps, he looked at Ahaana, who seemed to be dozing. He picked her in his arms and laid her on the bed. He looked at her, her expressions peaceful and the bracelet gifted by her father shining in the moonlight. He had never seen her like this, and he felt his heart skip a beat.
He kissed her forehead and covered her with the duvet. He took the couch and fell asleep. In about three and a half years he slept peacefully, without any nightmares of his broken life and he hoped that Ahaana too was feeling that way.
