>Chapter Thirty-Two< Cecilia
There wasn't a logical drop of thought left in me. I completely freaked out. So, obviously, instead of calling 911, I dragged Isaac to my car and took him to the hospital myself.
This now concludes another episode of...The World's Stupidest People!
I didn't have anything to hook him up to, I didn't have a comfortable place for him to lay...hell, I didn't even know if he was breathing. And, if you couldn't tell, I didn't have the common sense to check.
"Welp," I sighed, jumping into the driver's seat. "Time to ignore every road safety law that's been brutally beaten into my skull!"
I started my reign of terror by not-so-majestically hitting the gas pedal and pulling out of Isaac's driveway at high speeds. I'm going to spare you the main details of my drive. Let's just say it was destructive enough to be considered comical.
I ran a stop sign, drove on the sidewalk, and almost killed twenty people. (But hey, who's counting?)
And, somehow, not a single police officer pulled me over.
Strengthens your faith, doesn't it?
Of course, my driving probably wasn't as bad as I assumed it was. Maybe my utter and complete lack of sanity made it seem worse than it actually was.
Whatever the case, when I pulled into the hospital parking lot, a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. As carefully as I could, I picked Isaac up and carried him over to the emergency room doors, trying to ignore the blood he had left in my car.
The women at the front desk looked up at me. Her eyes widened. She reached for the phone by the desk and began speaking rapidly into it.
I made it up to the desk and caught the end of what she was saying. "...down here immediately!"
She slammed the phone down and turned to look at me, her brown eyes worried. "We're getting a doctor down here to take him up. While we wait...um...could you explain to me what happened? Just briefly. We need to know how to handle his situation."
"I'm not really sure I could explain everything that happened in a brief way." I answered slowly, readjusting Isaac in my grip.
The nurse tilted her head. "Okay...then I'll ask you a few questions and we'll see if it helps." She paused for a moment, pulling out a clipboard and a pen. Then she observed Isaac, her gaze raking his body quickly.
"Animal attack?" She asked. I shook my head. The nurse scribbled something down on her board.
"Age?"
"Sixteen."
"Name?"
"Isaac."
"Full name?"
"Middle name too?"
"No, honey."
"Isaac Carter."
"Okay...was he ever suicidal?"
I paused for a moment, staring at the cuts all over Isaac's arms and legs. "Not until recently." I said quietly. The nurse raised her eyebrows. "Do you know what could have caused his suicidal actions?"
"He lost his dad in a car crash just three days ago...and his mother passed away from cancer a few years ago. He became an orphan. He couldn't handle it. He tried to kill himself. I stopped him...but he passed out and I don't know why. So we're here now. Can you help him? Please?"
The nurse's eyes became sad. She set down the clipboard. "I'm sorry sweetheart." She said to me. "We'll fix him right away, okay? The doctor will be down here any moment."
I nodded once and stood waiting, leaning against the desk for support. My hip was starting to ache dully, but I did my best to ignore it. I couldn't have my cancer acting up. Not now.
After two minutes that felt like an eternity, the doctor appeared around the corner. He looked at me, then at the nurse, then at Isaac. "I'm guessing this is the one." He said dryly.
The nurse nodded, brushing a strand of frizzy brown hair behind her ear.
The doctor smiled kindly at me. He fixed his glasses and held out his arms. "I'll handle it from here. He'll be in good hands." He added, trying to assure me. I nodded stiffly and handed Isaac to him, my hands shaking.
The doctor held Isaac gently and walked away with him.
The last thing I saw before the doctor rounded the corner was Isaac's face, scratched up, bloody, and dead looking.
