Act II
The morning went without incident. As promised The Kid took Jill to breakfast at the local diner no too far from her apartment. Their very first date was breakfast at this very diner and it was where they had also shared their first kiss. Jill and The Kid had the kind of relationship every woman wanted with him. He was very sweet and very romantic. Jill was taken by his smile and it was love at first sight for her but suddenly in the last few weeks her feelings for The Kid have been changing. She been growing more and more impatient with him and she's been keeping her distance. The Kid could only believe that with the passing of her parents around this time last year her demeanor was expected to change until the holiday season came to a close. He had hoped that she would return to her naturally happy self and they would be right back in love like they were before her sudden change of mood. After breakfast, The Kid and Jill were on their way to the next planned activity when his driver approached.
"Sorry to bother you sir but there's a problem at First Avenue. Billy wants to see you right away." The driver said to him.
"Right now? Can't it wait?" The Kid whined like a child who was late taking his afternoon nap.
"No sir. Billy said he had to see you now." The driver demanded.
With a huff The Kid got in the car pulling Jill in the back seat with him. The driver closed the door and then made his way back to the driver side getting in quickly and pulling away from the curb. The Kid and Jill sat silent for a moment in the back seat. Jill stared out at the city and The Kid held her hand kissing t on occasion trying to get a small smile to form on her lightly glossed lips.
"Jill?" He called to her softly while she held her gaze out the window.
"Yes Kid?" She replied in a sad and annoyed tone.
"Please don't be sad. I wanna make you happy. I hope that after tonight you will always be happy. Would you like that?"
Jill didn't turn away from the window to engage The Kid. She just gave him a short answer to his question.
"Sure." Was all she could say to him.
The Kid couldn't figure her out today. She knew that she dreaded the holidays this year but he knew that what he was doing was best and only option to keep her from near depression. The car stopped at the front doors of First Avenue and The Kid turned to his future bride one more time and kissed her cheek.
"I won't be long I promise. Don't go nowhere." He whispered deeply in her ear before getting out.
Jill finally turned to him and didn't speak. She gave him a smile and patted him on the leg before sending him on his way. The Kid smiled back and hoped out of the car and went inside the club to find Wendy and Lisa having it out with Bobby Z and Fink while Billy was trying his best to defuse the situation. The Kid was soon annoyed with their back and forth and rushed the stage furious at the sight of his bandmates unable to come up with an agreement.
"Alright god damnit that's enough!" He shouted over them.
The group became silent and looked at The Kid who was never more red in the face since he and Billy had their first falling out when he was just coming onto the music scene.
"What the hell is going on? I have shit to do today and y'all are blowing it! The fuck is it now?" The Kid huffed.
"The problem is this bullshit song of yours Kid! We can't play this! You know it's not our sound and it would be an embarrassment to come on stage and play this campy bullshit!" Wendy snapped.
Wendy Melvion was never one to keep her opinions bottled up. If she didn't like something she will gladly let you know it and you would have to take it for what it was without question. The Kid always liked Wendy but he wasn't fond of her snarky holier than thou attitude whenever an altercation would arise. Lisa was more reserved in nature and was always the one who would reign Wendy in before she was able to cross the line and say something that could cost her everything she worked for. Bobby and Fink didn't mind playing The Kid's music because they knew that pissing The Kid would get them kicked to the curb in a heartbeat. They had preferred to stay on his good side for as long as possible until they hit big in Hollywood. Club owner Billy Sparks was always the one who had to settle the fights within the band because The Revolution was his gold mind but with all the fighting amongst the group he was ready to find talent that could work together without giving him hell. While The Kid tried to sort out the issues with the band Billy went over to the bar and watched the argument from there. Before long he was growing tired of listening to them fight. He called The Kid over to the bar and told him to send the group home and for him sit down, shut up, and listen. Kid sent everyone out of the club and then did what Billy requested while he sat at the bar.
"Alright Kid what the fuck is going on? Ever since y'all hit big in the city y'all can't seem to agree on something as simple as a fucking song! I can't deal with your childish drama while your out chasing ass! You've already taken my best waitress from me and now you and your band are hurting the business. Now if I said it once I'll say it again. If you can't get your shit together by New Year's Eve then I'm replacing you with another group. No excuses! Either you fix it or find a new place to play! I'm not joking Kid."
Before The Kid could give his explanation Billy walked away from the bar leaving him all by himself. The Kid got up from the bar saddened that he was now facing possible firing from First Avenue if his band couldn't come to an agreement on the set list. He went back out to the car and got inside letting out a deep breath after slamming the door closed. The Kid was frustrated that his day was going from great to ok but he didn't want to upset Jill by telling her what happened.
"Everything Ok Kid?" Jill asked him.
"Yeah." He said shortly trying to forget what had just happened.
He instructed the driver to go to their next planned activity and prayed that things would be a little better. The Kid was not expecting everything from that point to fall apart but little did he know the universe had other arrangements.
