Ch-39 Seem Impossible?
Argenta stood at the edge of the observatory, her gaze fixed on the flickering force field shielding the landscape beyond. The shield that had once held strong was now a fading barrier against the memorisutira, its light barely keeping the darkness at bay. Her expression was unreadable, but the weight in her stance was enough to betray her resolve.
As I walked up beside her, I placed a hand on her shoulder, hoping to offer some sort of reassurance. "We can't hold them off forever," I said softly, my voice as steady as I could manage. But even I could feel my confidence slipping, like sand through fingers. "But we'll find a way. Together."
She turned to face me, and in her golden-brown eyes, I saw a flicker of something raw—worry, fear, maybe even defeat. "Lory... I'm not ready to watch any of you get hurt—not again." Her voice was barely above a whisper, her hand clutching mine as if she was afraid to let go. "I can't lose anyone else."
I took her hands in mine, squeezing gently, grounding both of us in that moment. "You won't lose us, Argenta," I said, my voice firm, as though the strength in my words could shield her from whatever fears haunted her. "We're stronger together. And we're right here, fighting beside you."
She let out a breath, and I felt her tension ease slightly. Her fingers brushed my cheek, a gentle, comforting touch that seemed to say everything she couldn't put into words.
I leaned forward, letting the world fall away as our lips met. In that kiss, I felt all her strength and every hidden fear, every silent hope. She clung to me, allowing the softness of the moment to drown out the chaos outside.
When we pulled away, I saw tears glistening in her eyes. "If something happens out there... you're the reason I kept fighting. You reminded me why I had to be brave."
"Nothing's going to happen to us," I replied, feeling a surge of protectiveness. "We're in this together, Argenta. And whatever it takes, we'll make it through."
But before I could say more, she slipped out of my grasp and bolted for the door. It took me a moment to realize what was happening, and by the time I did, she was gone, the door sealed behind her.
"Argenta!" I shouted, pounding my fists against the door, desperation rising like a tidal wave. "Don't go out there alone! We can face them together!"
I called out, banging on the door. "Argenta!" My voice was frantic. "What are you doing?"
Her head turned slightly, enough for me to see the hardened determination etched on her face. "I'm buying us time, Lory. The shield's failing, and if it goes down completely, there won't be a place left to protect."
"Come back inside!" I pleaded, my heart breaking. "We can fight together!"
But she shook her head, her voice carrying over the chaos. "I can't. Not this time."
Then, her entire demeanour shifted. Her stance widened, her eyes sharpened, and she took a deep breath, releasing it slowly as something ancient, something powerful, washed over her.
"Tarnisha..." she whispered, calling forth the part of herself she rarely let anyone see.
I'd only seen her alter ego, Tarnisha, surface once before, but even that glimpse hadn't prepared me for the full force of her transformation now. Tarnisha was the warrior within Argenta—the spirit of strength, wild and untamed. Her golden-brown eyes darkened, taking on a fierce, almost ethereal glow, and a faint shimmer spread across her skin as a pair of translucent wings unfolded from her back, arching high into the sky.
She looked back at me, her face a mixture of Argenta's soft strength and Tarnisha's unyielding ferocity, and for the first time, I saw them as one, coexisting in perfect harmony.
In that instant, everything clicked into place.
I knew what I had to do.
Heart pounding, I remembered an old passageway, a forgotten exit used only in emergencies, likely left off the main system. Without a second thought, I sprinted toward it, forcing the door open just as the shield outside flickered, on the brink of collapse.
Emerging into the open, the noise hit me—hisses, roars, the chittering of countless memorisutira advancing on the observatory. And there she was, Argenta, or rather, Tarnisha, standing at the edge of the shield, her wings alight, her form blazing with energy.
When she noticed me, her expression shifted from surprise to relief. I caught up to her, meeting her fierce gaze with my own.
"Did you really think I'd let you do this alone?" I asked, my voice steady even as adrenaline coursed through me. In that moment, I was terrified and determined all at once.
A small, almost vulnerable smile crossed her lips. "Together, then."
With one last look, we turned to face the horde, and I felt a power stirring within me—a fire, ancient and unyielding, waiting to be unleashed. I stretched out my hand, and flames leapt to life at my fingertips, warm and familiar, as though they had been part of me all along.
A realization hit me like a lightning bolt.
In the training simulations, the memorisutira had fallen so quickly, disintegrating almost effortlessly as soon as they touched my sword. My weapon had been alight with fire in those moments, burning with a power I hadn't fully understood—until now.
I let that fire grow, watching it spread across my hands and arms before I channeled it into my sword, the blade igniting in a brilliant blaze. The flame clung to me, transforming from a flickering ember to a roaring inferno as I turned to face the memorisutira with new clarity.
Beside me, Argenta's wings flared, absorbing the fire, each feather shimmering as it caught the blaze. She was a vision, her form outlined in flames, a beacon of light cutting through the darkness.
Together, we waded into the fray, each of my strikes enhancing her every move, my fire casting her in a fierce, untouchable light. The memorisutira recoiled, their shrieks piercing the air as they fell under our combined assault.
In the heat of battle, we moved in perfect harmony, every movement choreographed by some unspoken connection. Each swing of my sword sent waves of flame roaring forward, obliterating anything that dared approach. And she was there beside me, her wings an extension of her fury, slicing through the creatures with lethal grace.
Our bond strengthened with each strike, each step. I could feel her energy, her power, like a heartbeat in sync with my own. Together, we were unstoppable.
As the last of the memorisutira fell back, retreating under the relentless onslaught, I knew we had won. The battlefield was silent, the air thick with smoke and the acrid scent of scorched earth. Argenta and I stood side by side, our breathing heavy but victorious.
As the silence settled, I looked at her, her wings still glowing faintly with the remnants of the fire. She was breathtaking, fierce and gentle, strong and vulnerable all at once. And in that moment, I knew I couldn't hold back any longer.
Without a word, I reached for her, pulling her close, and pressed my lips to hers. It was a kiss filled with everything we'd fought for, every fear and hope we'd carried with us through the darkness. She melted into me, her arms wrapping around my neck as our hearts beat in perfect sync, as if we were the only two people left in the world.
When we finally pulled back, her face was soft, her eyes shining with a warmth that was all Argenta.
"We did it," she whispered, a hint of awe in her voice.
"Together," I replied, brushing a strand of hair from her face, still reeling from the power of what we'd accomplished.
When we finally broke apart, the others began to step out of the observatory, their faces lit with the soft, early morning light that was beginning to creep over the horizon. One by one, they emerged, each bearing their own signs of the long battle. Stunned and relieved, they looked around at the wreckage, their expressions a mixture of awe and disbelief at what had just unfolded before them.
Cleo was the first to approach, his eyes wide, taking in the smoldering remains of the battlefield. His usual mischievous smirk was replaced with a rare solemnity as he let out a low whistle. "Blimey... I didn't think anyone could stand a chance against that horde," he muttered, glancing between Argenta and me as though seeing us for the first time.
Behind him, Brittney followed, her dark makeup smudged with ash and sweat, but her eyes fierce and bright. She took in the scene with a slow nod, her usual confidence momentarily tempered by the gravity of what we had just survived. She stepped forward, pulling both Argenta and me into a tight embrace, her strength grounding us in the moment. "You two looked like warriors out there," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "We owe you everything."
Nicholas appeared next, silent and watchful, his gaze shifting between each of us as though assessing the damage not just to our surroundings, but to each of us as individuals. His dark brown hair was disheveled, and he looked exhausted, but his eyes held a quiet pride. "Guess it's safe to say none of us are the same after this," he murmured, his voice laced with a strange mix of admiration and respect.
Reyna was close behind, her steps light and cautious, as though afraid that even one misstep might disrupt the fragile peace. She caught my gaze and offered a tentative smile, her blue eyes filled with relief. "I thought... I thought we'd lost you both," she whispered, her voice barely audible, but I could feel the weight of her words. There was something fragile in her expression, a vulnerability I hadn't seen before.
Willia, as usual, was already thinking several steps ahead, her sharp green eyes scanning the debris with a calculating look. She adjusted her cat-eye glasses and nodded appreciatively at us. "You two are practically legends now. I'll write it all down, if I can find words that do it justice," she murmured with a touch of her usual sass, though there was genuine gratitude in her tone.
Behind them, Jackson loomed, towering over the rest of us with his usual quiet strength, though there was an unfamiliar softness in his baby blue eyes as he took in the scene. He walked over, placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder, and gave Argenta an approving nod. "You saved all of us," he said simply, his deep voice carrying the weight of unspoken gratitude.
Yara bounded forward next, her energy undimmed despite the chaos, a bright spark in an otherwise somber scene. She beamed at us, her sparkly blue eyes brimming with pride. "You guys were unstoppable! Like... superheroes or something. It was epic!" Her words were filled with genuine admiration, her enthusiasm contagious even in the aftermath.
Adam, ever the charmer, flashed us a grin, his blonde hair tousled and his usual suave demeanor a little frayed but unshaken. "I'll admit, you had me worried for a minute there," he said, his tone teasing, though the slight tremor in his voice betrayed how close to the edge he'd been. "But then again, I should've known you'd come through. You always do."
Finally, Cleo, who had been circling the group with his keen tech-savvy eyes, caught sight of us again, his British accent tinged with both relief and awe. "Well, that's something I don't see every day," he said, his voice laced with his trademark humor. "Our very own Argenta and Lory, taking on an army. Can't say I expected anything less, though."
As they gathered around us, the shared weight of our relief filled the silence, everyone breathing a collective sigh of gratitude. In each gaze, in each soft-spoken word, I saw a sense of unity that hadn't been there before—a bond forged not just by survival, but by the promise that we would face whatever came next together.
Argenta met my eyes again, her expression softer now, a faint smile pulling at her lips. "We made it," she whispered, her voice steady yet filled with wonder. And as the first rays of sunlight began to wash over the ravaged ground, illuminating the scars of the battle we'd just endured, I knew that we had come through something unbreakable. We had survived. We looked around, at what was left of our school, our sanctuary, now scarred but not broken. The sight was bittersweet, yet there was a beauty in it, a reminder of all we'd fought for. The memory of the battle still lingered, a shadow on our hearts, but we stood together, stronger than ever.
About an hour later, Cupcake and I sat in the observatory, processing what had just happened.
But our moment was interrupted by the arrival of a figure stepping out of the shadows—Sean. His calm demeanor sent a chill through the air, as though he carried a threat more potent than any we had faced.
He walked toward us, his gaze lingering on Argenta, something unreadable flickering in his eyes.
"Did you miss me?" He said, snarkily. As the silence hung heavily between us, I took a slow, cautious step back, my gaze never leaving Sean. I had seen enough of Sean's games to know there was always more beneath the surface. Argenta stood still, watching him, her expression unreadable.
Sean's voice broke the stillness, smooth as ever but with an edge of something deeper—a warning, perhaps. "You look like you've won the battle," he said, glancing over at me with a smirk. "But you've still got the war to go. You should have known better than to get comfortable. Especially now."
I clenched my fists, my temper flaring. "You've been playing both sides from the start, haven't you? What the hell do you want, Sean?"
Sean chuckled darkly, taking a slow step toward Argenta. "I didn't think you'd get it so soon. After all, I'm always two steps ahead." His eyes locked onto hers, piercing and calm. "You know, I never quite understood why you always think you have all the answers. But then again, you're not stupid. You just don't listen."
Argenta didn't flinch as Sean's fingers hovered over her wrist, brushing lightly against a small black cut we hadn't noticed before. "What's this really about?" she asked, her voice steady despite the tension thick in the air. "And stop pretending like you're not still holding a grudge."
He leaned in, his tone changing—quieter, more serious. "I respect you, Argenta. I always have. But this... this is something you need to understand." His gaze flickered briefly to me before returning to the cut. "That mark? It's not just a scratch. The Memorisutira can access every memory you've ever had. Every moment, every secret. Every weakness."
Argenta's hand instinctively twitched, as though she could feel the weight of what he was saying.
"Why the warning, Sean?" I asked, my voice hard, distrust rising. "Are you really trying to help us? Or are you just playing some twisted game?"
Sean's lips twisted into a faint smirk, but there was something almost apologetic in his eyes. "Don't mistake this for kindness. I'm not here to help you. I'm just giving you a chance not to make things worse for yourselves. It's a rare thing, me giving you a choice." He stepped back, and the coldness of his presence seemed to deepen. "Memorisutira's grip is going to tighten. If you don't act fast, you'll have no memory of who you were, who you are."
Argenta's jaw tightened as she glanced down at the cut, the reality of his words sinking in. She didn't say anything at first, just processing what he had just revealed.
"I'm not here for a thank-you," Sean added with a scoff, his eyes narrowing slightly as he gave me one last glance. "But I do expect you to listen. You're more than just pawns in this game, but that cut means you've got a lot more to lose than you think."
With one last lingering, cryptic look, Sean turned and melted back into the shadows, his presence slipping away as quickly as it had arrived. The observatory suddenly felt colder, emptier.
I was the first to speak. "He's right, isn't he? We can't ignore this." I glanced at Cupcake, my voice softer now. "We need to figure this out, fast."
Cupcake, still staring at the place Sean had been, finally broke the silence. "I don't trust him... but I don't think he's lying either." Her voice was steady, but there was a trace of doubt there. She looked up at me, her expression resolute. "We've got to be smarter than this. We have no choice but to act."
I nodded, a grim resolve settling in my chest. "We'll figure it out. Together."
And though the weight of Sean's words hung over us, neither of us could shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something far more dangerous than we had imagined.
