He was just drowning, drowning under the water, and there was nothing I could do. I tried to use this 'magic' that I had but it seemed as if it had 'expired'. It wasn't working and Skye and Harley were hiding behind trees as if waiting for something to happen and Shadow would be saved. Nothing would ever work in life in general if you just stand there cowering at each obstacle that comes to you.

Shadow gave one last look at me before he dived under the water by the 'lake monster'. It was a truly horrific sight to behold; with it's long flowing green hair trailing behind as it dragged him under the water and to his murky death. As soon as he went, I dropped to my knees hoping that it was one of those scary horror movies where the guy would die, but as soon as he went under the water, he'd be saved by someone he didn't suspect. 

Yet, nothing happened. He was gone, gone forever, and there was nothing that I could do, but blame myself. It was me who'd lead him here, I'd lead us all here. No one wanted to be here and all came with regret, I could feel it. I hoped that if I could say one thing to him that would save him I'd say: "Don't give up, keep fighting, don't let them win." And hope for the best. I wish I could tell him things that I didn't get to tell him before.

Like, how cute he looked.

The words tumbled into my mind as I wondered where I'd got that from. I don't like him and I never would, I just think it's cool how he can keep his head up in situations like these; he was dying and as he went beneath, he gave me one last sad smile!

I cringed in embarrassment. He was down there and all I could think about was him. I hardly spent a day with him and this happens. It's all my fault!

Why did I do this? Why?

If he died, he wasn't dying alone. I'm going to go with him, arrogant as he was, he was still a person.

 Closing my eyes tight shut, I braced myself for the cold water, despite the constant remarks of disapproval from Skye and Harley.

Ducking under the cold water, I closed my eyes, blocking the outside world from myself.

This is the end. The end of my world as I knew it. I'm only 13, why me? I shouldn't have left Cate by herself, she wouldn't come after me and save me, nor was she going to worry about me, or mourn me in my coffin.

I opened my eyes slowly, only to find water in my eyes, but in the corner of my eyes, I could see a figure, small and hunched. 

One word flashed in my mind:

Cate.

She'd come. If she did, I'd know she'd care. She may not care about me in a romantic way like I did, but she did in a friendly way, and that was all that matters. Someone does care, outside of Harley, he would care anyway, he's my brother, caring about me is basically his job.

But, Harley he wouldn't have been brave enough to come into this freezing water to save me, but Cate would! I was sure she would.

Knowing this, gave me a new sense of determination. I had to save Cate I couldn't let her live through this by herself even if my life depended on it... wait, it does. 

I panicked; I was in water and I couldn't breathe. I've heard that some divers can hold their breaths for 20 minutes, but I was running out of breath and I hardly been here for one minutes.

Attempting to calm myself down, I faced the reality of the situation, you only have one life, if I wasted that one life here, I haven't lived my life properly.

Kicking the monster in it's face, its grip on my hand slackened, and I took that advantage to burst out of its grasp completely. Soon enough, I'd broken out of its grasp and clawed my way through the water and to the surface.

Clawing my way to the surface, I allowed myself two deep breaths of fresh air before going back under, to Cate's limp body underneath.

'I can do this', I repeated in my head, over and over again. I had to do this, our lives depended on it and I couldn't find an alternative option. She had obviously thrown herself into the water because of me. 

I couldn't help but blame myself for it. But, now wasn't the time to play the 'blame' game. There was only one objective:

'Save Cate'.

Despite the obstacles, I swam towards the helpless girl who was desperately trying to breathe as she was below the surface, and grabbed her by the waist, and hoisted her up above the surface as best as I could. Just about managing to get her above the water and on dry land, my body lost all adrenaline and I fell unconscious beneath the water.
