Prompt: Christmas Eve Ball.

The Christmas eve ball was held for all soldiers, rank didn't matter and uniform wasn't expected to be worn either. Friends or family members could be brought as a soldier's plus one and the chosen hall would always be overly large to fit as many guests as possible. A garden close by for those that couldn't get inside and would be brave enough to face winter's weather for a night of celebration.
New friendships, one night mistakes that were never spoken over again and a night full of fun and joy would be given at the Christmas eve ball. Families meeting comrades they've only heard stories over and rivals finding a peaceful agreement for the night unless it was during a few party games held during the night.
The hall would always be beautifully decorated, the best food and drinks were given out and for once, everyone was spoiled. The people's money should be used against better weapons, medical care or longer lasting uniforms. But for one single night .. no one even dared to complain over the waste of money when it would give them all a new fond and warm memory to cherish.
Photos were taken for free and would be passed around to the owners once Christmas is passed. Sometimes those photos would the only thing some would have over their friends when their work turn dangerous once more. Those photos would seal a whole night into one little bit of paper and that tiny bit of paper would hold so many feelings without ever knowing it.
For Roy, his eyes were only focused on one important detail of the night.
The only thing that his eyes strayed from his future's dream.
Riza.
She was dressed beautifully.
Everyone had sent longing glances towards her whenever she's walked past or stood near them. Women and men all looking like they wanted to ask for a date but no soul being brave enough as her rumours as a soldier still gained her respect out of uniform.
She was dressed in a slim, silky dress with a slit from mid thigh to all the way down her leg. The hints of a thigh holster clear to see and just making the dress belong to her more. A matching of colour dress shrug was worn, covering her back and the scar he had given her to help free her from her father's secrets.
She looked stunning as always, but tonight she glowed more as she wasn't forced to carry the military burdens.
She was standing as her own self and to him, that's when she was the most gorgeous.
Being her Colonel, he had full right to march, casually, not wanting to ruin his suit, towards her. Hands un-gloved even if they both knew he held a pair of ignition cloth gloves tucked in a pocket, just in case he needs them.
His smile was all natural, all real, just for her, just as her smile to him always have been.
"Looking handsome, sir" Riza complimented as her eyes finally met his after giving him a look over.
"Someone had to give the ladies something to look at for their enjoyment tonight" Roy explained as he pulled on the edges of suit jacket, never having bothered to button it up.
"Just pray that no jealous soul decides spill wine over you as revenge. You're useless when wet, sir" Riza warned as she stepped closer, folding his collar as it was left standing at the back of his neck and knowing it was a fashion statement either. Leaving his shirt top button undone and not even bothering to pull his crumbled up tie from his pocket.
"I'm sure I can rely on my lieutenant to defend me if that ends up happening" Roy casually replied as he lost himself to her eyes, feeling her hands slowly drag around his collar before finally pulling her hands back to rest by her sides.
"Shouldn't you be busying your feet with a dance?" Riza asked as she looked away, taking in the filling room and all it's guests. Music playing near the centre of the room where the space for a dance floor was left. Leaving everyone to mingle and stand around the centre circle.
"My first dance belongs to my lieutenant, a chance to repay her for all that she's done for me and will forever do for me. To help ease her alerted state and allow her to finally enjoy a night meant for fun" Roy spoke up as he stepped to stand beside her, taking in the decorated hall around them and focusing on where the dance floor stood waiting for them both.
"How honourable of you" Riza dryly replied as she rolled her eyes at him.
"I like to see it as keeping her honour. I can't trust anyone else to treat her for all her worth tonight" Roy smirked back, rather proud over his reply as he offered his hand towards her, the silent question hanging in the air between them.
"Just don't complain when I step on your feet" Riza sighed, her hand already being placing in his awaiting one, no hesitation seen.
"Are you wearing heels?" Roy worriedly asked as he started to escort them both towards the dance floor.
"I went for the smarter option and stayed with flats" Riza anwsered honestly, purposely bringing attention to her feet from where she's gone for a pretty styled pair of ballerinas flat shoes. She's never been overly good with heels unless they were a chucky and thick square heal.
A new song was starting to play as they reached the floor, leaving them to easily mingle among the other soldiers and civilians coming together for a slow and steady dance. His hands easily holding her close, leading her with each and every step of the dance.
Never once taking advantage of the trust she placed upon him, never letting his hands wonder like a fool as he knew she'd have him pinned without seconds if he eve dared to think over doing so. He thrived in the trust given to him, to be able to still lead her and have her faith in taking control between them when it was needed.
Neither was the more talented dancers but they did well enough to not trip over each other's foot or ruin the dance for anyone else. They kept to their own world, being good enough not to stand out and just be in the moment together.
Gaining one lasting memory together in secret.
"When I'm Führer, I will make changes. Not just ones that benefit the rest of the country but those standing by my side. I'll make it so you can stand with me in everyway that we want without any military rules stopping us" Roy promised in a low but gentle whisper as he held his lieutenant close, close as he's always wanted her to stay.
He risked a look to her eyes, knowing her expression can stay as unreadable as she likes it to but her eyes have never lied to him before. He knew his own eyes grew those few extra inches whenever they landed on her but he's always cherished the stars that grew in her eyes whenever she looked at him and only him.
He was going to make changes that benefit their country, to make lives happier and better. To give soldiers a longer and healthy life. To make sure such unforgiveable orders are never given out again. He was going to make their home a better place.
But he was also going to make her his wife one day, to make it acceptable for a married couple to stand side by side in marriage and in work. He knew their feelings had only made t hem as strong as they have stood as a weakness. He knew they could stay as they were while wearing matching rings. He was going to change military laws, to change the rules and allow them to no longer have to choose a better future and their own selfish desires, they'll be able to have both.
He'll make sure they can.
If they can't work while wearing matching rings than he'd personally step back or speak with her as an equal over them serving others instead. He'll have others removed from each other if they can't stay professional while in uniform. But he won't punish those that can wear the uniform and stay professional while loving the person they stood beside.
"And I'll be right by your side as you do that, sir" Riza whispers back her promise, having chosen him and his dream long ago and never having fully regrated her choice since.
He twirled her with ease, pulling her back and pretending to have misjudged his strength and her weight just to have her purposely crash against his chest. To let his arms holder her much closer and almost melt them as one.
Feeling her head rest against his shoulder, her hands gripping him tight and wanting to never let go in return. The steps to the dance forgotten as they just existed together and forget the rest of the world, the rest of the universe and all the burdens awaiting them once morning comes along.
For tomorrow they'll stand as Lieutenant Hawkeye and Colonel Mustang.
But one day in the future, they'll be Lieutenant Mustang and Führer Mustang.
For now, they'll take a stroll among the fall snow and let their steps grow lost and forgotten by the fresh snow that'd hide the steps they've taken in their lives and will melt long before their dream's become their future.
