By Her Side
Jessica held Eloise in her arms as they waited for an ambulance to arrive. Jessica was in tears, sobbing and crying for help. When they came back to the cabin Eloise wasn't breathing. It almost sounded like she was choking. Sam was able to get her breathing again by doing CPR.
Jessica and Sam had never been more afraid in their life. Eloise had a fever, she was wheezing, and had flushed skin.
Jane was in the back of the room crying. She felt like it was all her fault. She was resting next to her the whole time. She had never felt so guilty in her life. What if the baby was dying? What if she could have done something sooner?
Finally, the EMT's and paramedics had showed up. They took the baby from Jessica and listened to her breathing and took her vitals.
"What's wrong with her? Is she going to be okay?" Sam asks as Jessica sits there, crying, and keeping her eyes on Eloise.
"We should get her to a hospital." The man says
"Okay." Sam says trying to keep his cool.
Ann gathered all of their things so that they could have everything they needed.
"Jessica... she's going to be okay." Dorthy says helping her up. She was numb. She canceled out everything except for Eloise's soft cries.
Sam and Jessica follow the EMT's out of the house and into the ambulance.
As Jessica walks out she looks at Jane who cried softly in the corner. Without hesitation Jessica gave her a hug.
"I'm so sorry." She says
"It's not your fault." Jessica whispers

The ride to the hospital felt like hours to Sam and Jessica. All they wanted was for their daughter to get the treatment she needs right away and to find out what's wrong.
This is something Jessica wouldn't even wish on her worst enemy. The pain she felt, how scared she was, and how desperately she wanted everything to be fine. Her hands trembled and she couldn't keep her body still. Her tears made her tired, her mind told her all the bad things that could be going on.
Sam was being more vocal. He was talking with the paramedics and EMT's, he was telling them everything he could. But in reality, they had no idea what was causing all of this.
All they wanted was answers.

Immediately when they arrived to the hospital they took Eloise from Jessica and Sam. She placed Sam and Jessica in a room that was made for babies. They anxiously waited. Jessica cried into Sam's shoulder as he held her. He tried his best to keep it together for her, but what parent could ever deserve this?
"She's going to be okay. I know it." Sam says
"I can't ever leave her again. How selfish am I? Leaving my one month old child by herself with someone while I was out dancing and being so stupid!" Jessica yells
"Honey, how could you have known? It's the same thing as one of us taking a shower. We weren't gone that long." Sam says holding her hand
"It's all my fault. My baby stopped breathing." She cries
"This isn't your fault."
"What if no one noticed? What if she had died!" Jessica sobs
"Honey, stop thinking like this. She's in good hands. The doctors will figure out what's wrong."
"We are so far away from home... we don't have barley any of her things here. It's getting close to nine. We should be at home by now.... what happens when she gets hungry? Will they let me feed her?"
There were so many questions and Sam didn't have an answer for any of them. He just had to pray and pray that she was okay.

About thirty minutes later a doctor walks in. Behind him is Eloise in a little box hooked up to all kinds of machines and IV's.
"My baby!" Jessica cries running over to her.
When she saw Eloise on oxygen and all of these needles inside of her, she cried even harder.
"Is she okay?" Jessica asks
"It seems to me that your baby has viral pneumonia." The doctor says
"Pneumonia? Is she going to get through it?" Sam asks
"How could she have gotten pneumonia? We are so careful about people and germs." Jessica cries
"Viral pneumonia is very common with new born babies. Without you knowing she must have had an upper respiratory infection like influenza or a tough cold. Symptoms appear gradually." The doctor says
"But she's been fine... happy, giggly, and we take her on walks everyday around the neighborhood. She's fed properly, we barley even take her out in public because we are afraid of germs." Sam says trying to explain himself to the doctor.
"It sounds like you're doing everything right. Overall she's a very healthy baby, but sometimes things like this can be a blind side. She had a lot of fluid in her lungs which is probably what caused her to stop breathing. Right now she's hooked up to oxygen to help her breathe as well as some steroids to help support her lungs." He says looking over her file
"How long will she be like this?" Jessica asks
"It may take a while for her to recover. I want to keep her here until the pneumonia passes and we have everything under control." The doctor says with confidence.
"Will she make it through?" Sam struggles to ask
"I'm very confident that she will. With proper treatment she should recover fast and be out of here within the next one to two weeks. You guys are aloud to be here day and night. But I want to make sure you know that if you go outside of the hospital and come back, I recommend you wear these masks. And loved ones too.Unfortunately only parents are aloud in here, for her safety. She will have to be fed with a bottle by the nurses for the next few days before you can hold her. Always wash your hands. I would just say keep the masks on." He says giving instructions.
Never could Sam and Jessica imagine such a thing happening to their tiny baby. A lot went through their head. What if going on all of those walks outside made her sick. What if this is why she was so fussy during the car ride? What if they let too many people hold her? They couldn't help but blame themselves.
"I understand you are far from home. So I suggest calling a family member to drop off some belongings for you two if you plan on spending the night. We have everything here for the baby."
"Of course we are staying the night. Yes." Jessica says
"Is there anything else we can do for her?" Sam asks
"It's all in our hands. We will take care of her as best as possible." The doctor smiles. He hands Jessica and Sam face masks that they are required to wear. Eloise's immune system is so weak that she can't get sick right, it could be crucial to her health.
After the doctors left Jessica got a call from her mother that she was there to come see Eloise. Jessica wasn't up to see anyone, she didn't want to leave the hospital room, so Sam went down stairs to update family.
They all waited in the lobby of the hospital. They had no idea what floor Jessica and Sam were on. When they all saw Sam walking towards them with a mask they all felt a bit alarmed.
They had no idea if Eloise was okay or not. So they were glad for someone to finally give them answers.
When they see Sam they all run up to him, but he takes a few steps back.
"Sorry guys. We have to wear these masks and kinda keep our distance." He says
"Is Eloise okay?" Dorthy asks
Sam sighs "She's not well. She has viral pneumonia. So her lungs are filled with fluid and she's having a very hard time breathing. Hence why she stopped breathing earlier. She has to stay here until she's fully recovered. It can take up to two weeks. For the next few days Jessica and I can't hold her or touch her. Jessica can't feed her. And if the amount of fluid in her lungs does not decrease or gets worse, she has to get tubes in her chest." After explaining it all Sam went breathless. Having to explain everything made it more real and a lot scarier.
No one had any idea. They all felt so guilty and sad for their little sunshine.
"Are we able to see her and Jessica?" Ann asks
"I'm afraid not. We have to do everything we can to protect her from getting sick. Jessica and I are waiting on our flu tests now. As for Jessica, I don't think she'll be leaving the baby's side for a while."
"Well here is the rest of your things. Jessica's pump, some blankets, tooth brushes, everything you guys may need." Dorthy smiles
"Thank you guys. It means a lot." Sam smiles
"Of course. I just feel so bad." Jane sighs
"Don't be sad, Jane. This wasn't your fault." Dorthy says
"And Ann, Madison, we are sorry about how the end of your party went." Sam says with sad eyes
"Don't worry... all we care about is if she is okay." Madison says
"Yes. Don't worry."
