it happened by persuasion
"Mom told me that you argue with her."
Conrad said to her while he is busy putting her bags in the car. Austen didn't speak, she just went inside and pretending that she didn't hear her brother. Her older brother is getting pissed by his sister's attitude, he couldn't understand why it is a big deal for Austen.
"Are you gonna be like this, Austen?" Conrad said with an stern tone, obvious that he's already annoyed to her.
Austen was just quiet and she sat in the back seat. She put on her earphones and hoping that her brother would shut up but her brother kept on rambling to Austen, she would just reply with her eyes rolling or she would just look at the window. After a few minutes, Conrad got tired speaking to her and they just drove silently.
It had been years since she went back to Hill Valley. Austen can't picture the town anymore and it saddens her that her grandmother wanted to sell the remaining estate of her grand-uncle. Good thing that she will be sleeping at her grandmother's house, she is planning to change her mind so she will not sell the only place where memories of her late brother are still alive.
She stares at the night sky and saw the multitude of stars painted in the sky. Austen suddenly remembers the campfire she had with her grandmother when she is on vacation, she was ten years old at that time. She was roasting the marshmallows, she can still feel the cold night air at that moment.
"Are we gonna talk about Doc and Marty?" She said with a hint of excitement in her voice.
Emma smiled at her granddaughter. "What do you want to talk about?" She asked her.
"The DeLorean, Doc Emmett, and Mcfly."
Emma laughed, she is certainly loved seeing her granddaughter who had given the full interest in Emmett and Marty. Her children never listened to her about them but Austen was different, she was all giddy whenever it is about her brother and Marty.
"What about Marty Mcfly?" Emma said.
Austen nodded and she started to nibble her smores while her grandmother started to tell about Marty.
"He is an interesting young man. Ever since he was young, he would visit Emmett in his garage and help him in his experiments. Emmett is quite lucky that he met a friend like Marty."
"Did you ever met him?" Austen asked.
"I did. Even though I am a lot older to Marty, I treat him as my younger brother."
Austen could see the sudden change of the facial expression of her grandmother. It is very clear that she also missed Marty.
"Do you know why they vanished?" Austen asked.
"I don't know. It is a mystery up until now why they vanished."
The gravity of her grandmother's lost was very deep and she was aware at a very young age. Her grandmother would smile but there would always be sadness and she knew that it is her brother.
"Do you still miss Grandpa Emmett?"
Emma smiled weakly and looked at the starry sky, "Every single day, Austen."
"Why don't we make our own DeLorean and save them so you will not be sad again."
She smiled at her grandmother and if that could only be easy to make, she has done that before but it is already too late. "You're one smart girl, Austen."
"I am pretty serious, granny. I will make my own DeLorean then I will save Doc and Marty."
Austen laughed at that beautiful memory with her beloved grandmother. She missed those campfires and her grandmother's unparalleled tenderness. That's why she truly cares about Doc Emmett's remaining estate because of her grandmother's love for her brother. Her family never understood her and why she is very defensive to the estate.
While she is preoccupied with her thoughts, Conrad suddenly spoke,
"Are we not gonna talk about this, Austen?"
Austen sighed heavily, "What do you want to talk about, dear brother of mine?"
She said in a sarcastic tone and she is still looking at the window.
"Austen, I know you cared about Grandma Emma so much but please, you need to understand that we need money for your tuition fee and Dad's business."
"The hell of it!" Austen suddenly burst out.
She hated the fact that they will set it just because of her Dad's business, her tuition fee in college is just an additional reason so her grandmother would say approve.
"Can you cut it out on being a five year old," Conrad said.
"You really used me as an excuse so grandma would give in, am I right?"
Conrad rolled his eyes, he gave an exasperating look to her sister in the mirror.
"Don't you get it, grandmother insisted it and she said that she wanted to help you."
Austen crossed her arms. She doesn't believe to her brother or even her mother that her grandmother wanted to sell it.
"Whatever."
Austen put on her earphones again and Conrad couldn't believe that her sister is doing it again. Throughout the ride, the siblings are silent and not wanting to talk about the matter for a while.
