Chapter 5
Nya's POV
We finally pulled up outside my home. Muttering a quiet word of thanks, I go to open the door but Lloyd stops me. He sighed, "Look. I hate it when we fight."
"Me too," I echo quietly.
"You...you have nothing to apologise for. I'm sorry for jumping the gun and getting defensive with you. I'm not happy with how close you are with Jay, I'll admit that but..." he takes my hand, "I guess I'm so used to it being just us."
My gaze lowers to our interlocked fingers, "We've been fighting more often than usual,"
"Yeah...we have. Here, look at me." With his free hand, Lloyd cups my chin, "You are my world, Nya Smith. And I don't want to lose you. Tell you what: what if we go on a date this Saturday? Just you and me?"
I grimace slightly. Lloyd notices my change in emotions, "What is it?"
"Just that...there's this mechanics fair on the same day and I was hoping I could check it out...I know you're not interested in that stuff, but-"
He chuckles, "Sunday then?"
"It's a date."
He smiles and pulls me closer, connecting his lips with mine.
I enter my house, sending Lloyd off with a final wave before shutting the door, "I'm home!" I yell, kicking my shoes and socks off. I make my way upstairs, dragging my bag after me and into my room.
Ooh, I have a new message. Several, actually. It's from an unknown number.

Hey, it's jay
So i was wondering if you wanted to go to the mechanics fair together this weekend. My treat!
A smile stretches as I send out another message.
Hi! Yes, I'd like that a lot 😊
It's a date then ;)
"Nya, I'm heading out for work!" Dad calls, "Dinner's on the stove, and tell Kai he's on dish duty once he gets back!"
"Yeah!"
The door closes and I sigh. Mom wouldn't be home till late at night. Kai should be home in an hour or so. Until then it's just me, myself and I.
My bag sits idly at the corner of my room and I sigh, flopping back onto my bed and looking through at the picture Jay had sent me.
Sure enough, it was Lloyd relaxed on the white leather couch, with who looked to be Harumi Jade sitting on his lap, her arms across his chest as they laughed at someone or something offscreen.
I can't make it Sunday. Something came up
Oh no, don't do this to me. Is this about Jay?
No. It's about you and Harumi Jade
...
Listen, I pushed her away the minute she cosied up to me. I wouldn't do that to you, you know that
Please? Give Sunday a chance
...
I'll think about it
Okay 💚
It was only 5pm, and yet I already found myself heating up a plate of lasagne. Netflix was waiting for me in the living room, and I had the entire place to myself.
I cue up F.R.I.E.N.D.S on the TV and settle down with my lasagne. There really wasn't much to do at our home. We had board games that nobody really plays. Considering both your parents work full time, and their kids are all grown up, we're all sorta absorbed in our own worlds.
For me, that was college applications and exam prep. Both my parents worked in Biomedical Engineering, and my brother was studying Business at uni. I was hoping to enter Mechanical Engineering and get my degree in said field.
"I'm home!" My head cranes back to see my brother dumping his bag by the staircase, putting his shoes and socks away before coming to join me on the sofa, crashing beside me, nearly sending me flying into the air. "How's the highschool life, baby sis?"
I rolled my eyes, stabbing my fork through the pasta sheets, "Absolutely shit."
Kai fake gasped at me, "How dare you use such words?"
A giggle escapes my lips, "I'm not a kid anymore!"
"Nah, you still are to me. Oh, where did all the time go?" He wrapped his arm around me, my face smushed against his chest as he obnoxiously strokes the top of my head, "I remember you used to be so tiny!"
"You weren't much bigger." I groan, wriggling away from his grasp. Well, trying to, at least.
I heard him digging into my lasagne, and I thrash around wildy whilst he calmly continued to watch the show, eating my food which I portioned out and heated up.
"Asshole!"
"Noooo, I'm the better sibling with the ridiculously handsome looks, and you're my dorky little sister who used to do all my homework in exchange for candy!"
We don't speak of it.
"Ugh, you're so embarrassing!" I whine, punching his ribcage.
"I'm your brother, it's part of the job, dumbass!"
"Anyways, I have to talk to you about...something!"
"Sure, what's up?"
I groan, "It would be appreciated if first of all, you can let me breathe!"
More chewing noises and the sound of a fork on a plate, "Hmm...tell me what's up, first."
"I need you to drop me off at the Mechanic's Fair this-"
"This Saturday? Yeah, no, I got it. You've been blabbing about it for weeks now, I can hear it in my dreams."
I locate his foot with what little sight I have, and aim my own foot at it, bringing it down as hard as I can. Kai shrieked and I wriggled myself free, quickly finishing off the lasagne before Kai could get his grubby hands upon it.
He sees what I've done with the empty plate, "Oh, you little piece of-"
