Chapter 20
Nya's POV
"Yeesh. You look like a wreck," Kai states flatly, dumping his bag on the ground, "What happened, did you fail a class or something?"
"No." I sniffle. Kai comes into view, before grabbing my cushion. I tug back on it, but my brother overpowers me, prying the pile of feathers out of my hands, nearly stumbling over the coffee table in the process.
"I'm just gonna let you stew for a while, and I'll get a start on dinner."
My eyes searched the room "Aren't you supposed to be packing to go back to campus?" It hits me that Jay too, will be preparing to fly out of Ninjago tomorrow night, and back to Terra Technica to finish his university semester. More tears flood down my cheeks, and Kai strokes my head, "I have the apprenticeship for a few more weeks so I won't be going back to finish the semester. Now, do you want to tell me what on Earth is going on with you?"
"I told Jay I didn't want to be with him."
"You're joking, right?"
I glare up at Kai, hurling another cushion at him, "Does it look like I'm joking?"
"Okay, okay, yeesh! Go get changed and just...vent it all out, okay? We'll figure something out. Go, before you stain the cases."
Sitting up, I smooth out my skirt, "It's tears; it'll dry."
"Just- go get changed!"

Days passed, and still no word from Jay. Or anyone, really.
Right, right, right. I'd turned my phone off and let it rot unattended on my desk so I could mope in silence. My blinds were shut and the lights were off, and I was laying flat on my bed, hugging my pillow close to my chest.
So yeah, I was taking this really well indeed.
Jay must be in his dorm right now, or going to lectures, or going out on dates with other girls, considering it's around evening there. He's probably doing a lot better than me right now.
The door to my room bursts open and Kai marches in, "Okay, this is getting ridiculous! Nya, you're gonna call Jay up right now and tell him you love him, or so help me God I will drag you by the ear to Terra Technica so you can do it in person!"
"He's probably having the time of his life at uni," I whimper, "I don't want to ruin that for him."
The cactus took a heavy sigh, before seating himself on my bed, "He's really not. I still speak to him-"
My head jerks away from my pillow, "What? You do? H-How is he?"
"Why don't you ask him yourself? Nya, he still speaks of you. He misses you like crazy."
"I can't ask him."
"Why not?" Kai reaches out and strokes my head, "Give me one good reason as to why you can't call him and tell him how you feel."
"Because if it ever develops into a relationship, I'll screw up and break his heart."
"Sis, you're breaking his heart already, and yours too. You're so afraid to get into a new relationship that you're pushing him away and keeping your walls up! I hate seeing you like this, it's painful!"
"Should I have said yes, Kai?"
He tuts lightly, now weaving braids through my hair, "It's not too late. Considering how much you've saved up since middle school, it should be enough. And with Mom or Dad's Frequent Flyer card, it'll be perfect!"
"What will be perfect?"
Kai consults his phone quickly, before turning his attention to me, "I can give you a lift to the airport, and you can get a flight to Prime Empire. From there you take a cab to the university and find Jay!"
"That is the stupidest plan I've ever heard." I deadpan, reaching for my water bottle. Kai flicked my forehead and I yelped, swatting his hand away.
"Ow!"
"Come onnnnnnn!" He whined, "Do it for Jay! Do it for love!"
What's crazy is the fact that Jay would in fact do this for me if it were the opposite way around. What's crazier is the fact that I'm actually considering Kai's plan. I sit up, raking a hand through my messy bedhead.
"You're sure it's not too late?"
"Too late, too early, does it really matter? Jay's made it perfectly clear that you are the one for him, so why fret? Take your time! Also, if you are going through with this, please hurry up and leave since I really do want the house to myself for a couple of days."
I flop back onto my bed, "But I have my university applications to look out for!"
This was, in fact, true. I'd been praying to get an acceptance into the University of Terra Technica, the one in Terra Domina being my backup plan. If all else fails then I also applied for one in Shintaro, and one all the way down in Nom.
Kai grinned and brandished an envelope addressed to me from the UTT. My eyes widened, "Wait, is this-"
"Yes!"
I squeal, grabbing the envelope, "I got in?!"
"What? I dunno, the envelope hasn't been opened yet! Wait, hey, hey! Don't open it here! Go to Terra Technica first. Trust me."
I know Kai, and he always has my best interests at heart. So I know I can trust him on this plan.
Blinking, I nod, "Yeah. Okay. I'm gonna do it."
Kai threw his hands up in the air, "Okay, you go pack! I'll get your passport and the Frequent Flyer card. Hurry!"
And so I do.
***
We arrive at the airport, and Kai thrusts the little book and card in my hands, "Okay, go, go! Call me when you get there!"
My heavy bag on my back, I run through the doors, and straight into check-in.
"I'm sorry, ma'am, do you have a boarding pass?"
"Yes- wait, no! I'm a frequent flyer, and I need a ticket to Prime Empire." I hold up my passport and card, which is scanned thoroughly.
The woman at the desk taps her keyboard a few times, "Okay, we have a few seats left on a plane set to depart in 30 minutes, would you like an aisle seat, a window, or-"
"Window!" I check the large clock and impatiently drum the surface, as a ticket is printed out for me.
The majority of my savings were used to pay for the ticket, since it turns out purchasing one last minute tends to cost a tad bit extra.
"Have a safe flight-"
I ignore her, and run into security checks, placing my bag in the scanning machine before getting patted down by airport staff. Once deemed clear, I grabbed my bag and hightailed it to the gates.
"This is the final call. All passengers on Ninjagan Airlines, flight N193-DUHF from Ninjago City to Prime Empire, please make your way to the gates, your flight will be leaving shortly."
I follow the sound of the announcement to an empty room, where a member of the cabin crew hurriedly checks my passport and ticket, ushering me on the plane just as the big door closes.
Locating my seat was a nightmare, and I pushed through the swarm of screaming children and busy parents, squeezing into the window seat and tugging my bag off, strapping the seatbelt across my body and sitting back, staring out the little windows.
Oh God, I was actually doing this.
There was no turning back now.
"Passengers, we welcome you to Ninjagan Airlines. Please ensure you have followed through all mandatory safety checks, and make sure your seatbelt is securely fastened. This is a non-stop flight to Prime Empire International Airport. Thank you for choosing Ninjagan Airlines, and we hope you fly with us again."
