Chapter 78

Chapter 78: The Key

The light streaming in from the little motel window reflected off the piece of shiny plastic in my hand. The key was from The Roosevelt Hotel. Besides the hotel name, it had a small barcode on one side; and that was it.

Caspian sat down next to me and the bed titled downwards. He shifted his weight, so that the bed wasn't under strain. "So, now we know where Janet's staying," Caspian pointed out.

I nodded. Caspian had found the key card in Lewis's hand. His last attempt to help us out,

before he had died

"We should catch them by surprise," Caspian suggested. "We'll have the upper hand."

"We don't know the room number," I observed, turning the card over to see if there was something I was missing. Of course, they wouldn't display the room number on the card, it was for safety purposes. Although I highly doubt Newton or Janet needed any sort of protection, especially not from the two of us.

"The last four digits of the barcode," Caspian responded.

"Really?" I enquired, disbelieving.

He nodded. "One of the things we learnt during Stinger training."

"Because," I replied, "It's important to know how to break into a hotel."

"Of course." Caspian played along. There were red rings around both his eyes, and his hair was messier than usual. The front of his shirt was unbuttoned, like it wasn't worth his time to do it up. He somehow still looked like the kind of guy who would rip your heart out and trample all over it. I wasn't going to lie, especially not to myself, that's what I thought of him the first time I saw him. Typical player. Now I knew better; he was kind, caring and all the other clichѐs that fit the perfect boyfriend. Funny time for me to be thinking about all this.

"Earth to Maddie." Caspian clicked his fingers in front of my face.

"What?" I jumped back to reality.

"You didn't hear a word I said, did you?"

"Umm," I replied and exhaled loudly.

Caspian repeated what he had said about how we were going to tackle Janet and Newton, except it didn't involve a lot of tackling from our side. All we'd have to do is get into their hotel room when they weren't there, and find some dirt on them. Give it to the police. And bam.

"How are we going to know when they aren't there?" I enquired.

"Even if they are, I'll have the police station's number ready to dial," Caspian told me. "Plus, we know they choose to strike at night, well last night they did,' he added.

"Ok." I didn't like his idea, it seemed risky; but Caspian was so protective over me, he wouldn't try something that involved me unless he was sure it would work.

"Ok," Caspian repeated, and the edges of his lips curved slightly. It curved more until he was full-on smirking.

He roughly pressed his lips against mine, and pushed my shoulders against the bed. His body hovered over mine. He caressed my lips gently with his own, before pulling away and our lips made a popping sound.

"Needed to relieve the tension," Caspian explained, his breath still hot against my cheek.

"Did it work?" I asked.

"Not really," he replied. "But I think one more will."

He took my lips in his once again and kissed me slightly less passionately, but it produced the same effect. His fingers numbed everything they touched. It felt like an electrical current was flowing from his hands to my body, and shutting off each appendage and organ until my whole body was unresponsive.

"Oops," Caspian pulled away. "I forget about the kind of effect my kisses have on you."

I scowled playfully, before sticking my tongue out at him. He laughed, and it was safe to say the tension was relieved.
