Chapter 74

Chapter 74: Professional Killers

Rosalind gasped loudly, causing three heads to turn towards her. Her face was horror-stricken and pale. Her lip quivered nervously as she opened her mouth to speak. The words that came out were unrecognisable The only word that I could distinguish was 'the' and even that sounded a bit like 'deer'.

Lewis rushed over to her and gathered her up into his arms. 'Shhh," he uttered, as he held her quivering body against his still chest.

Caspian walked up to the open laptop and had a similar reaction to Rosalind's, only not as dramatic. I knew neither of them were capable of speaking, so I joined Caspian by the desk and looked over his shoulder.

"I don't understand," I stated, as two figures clad in black leather pranced around the screen with dead bodies lying around them; it looked like a scene from an old movie, one in which the graphics and acting sucked.

Caspian re-winded the video and I took a closer look as the NEWS 24 sign popped up, followed by a red-headed lady in a crisply ironed suit. All of us were too shocked by the scene to turn the sound up, so I was forced to read the subtitles.

Breaking News. Yesterday at approximately three o' clock, an attack was initiated on a group of homeless people just outside of The Urban Homeless Centre. A total of seven people were killed, with one survivor fighting for his life in the NY City hospital. The attack is thought to have been linked to a similar incident which took place outside NYU not too long ago. The police are linking the attacks based on the fact that both the attacks targeted homeless people, although the murderers seem to be using different methods. This time instead of guns, syringes were used. The victims were beaten badly before the killer blow was inflicted; an injection of air into their veins. Not much is known about the killers, but now that one of the centre's security cameras has caught this attack, the police have some leads. There has, however, been little progress in identifying the criminals. If anyone has any information on these attacks, please contact the police on 212-086-5763.

The video of the attack began playing again, and this time I paid close attention to the skilled moves that the two people made; each step was executed perfectly, as if the killers were trained in some form of martial arts. Their bodies moved as gracefully as Chrissie, when she was doing ballet. Their faces were always turned away from the cameras, like they had known the exact position of those cameras. If there were such a thing as professional murderers, then that's what these two were.

"That's Janet." I paused the video and zoomed in on the smaller person, her black hair hung out of her hoodie a little bit, and blew in the wind.

"But who's that?" Lewis startled me as he leaned over and refocused on the other figure; more gangly built and clearly a man. I hadn't even realised Lewis had been watching, I thought he was still calming Rosalind. I looked over at Rosalind who was slightly more composed and perched on the edge of the bed. Her feet thumped against the floor nervously.

"Why is everyone so shocked?" I asked, ignoring Lewis's question. "We were waiting for something like this is happen."

"But," Caspian spoke for the first time, "we were expecting a criminal who works solo."

"Who do you think it is?" Lewis repeated, gesturing towards the screen.

I shrugged and then suddenly remembered a vital piece of information. "Caspian?" I asked. "Didn't Victoria say Newton was alive and in New York?" Turned out my suspicions about Janet and Newton might have been right after all.
