Chapter 65: Spongebob
"Hi, Janet," I greeted, sliding my lunch tray onto the table. I could see that she was fighting the urge to tell me to 'beat it'.
She smiled politely and shoved her fork into her slice of chocolate cake.
"Shouldn't you be with your boyfriend?" Amber pursed her lips into what looked like a kissy face.
I looked at how far away Caspian was from Janet's bag. With his proximity, it should be easy for him to just drop the phone into her bag, but that's not what we were going for. Her phone had to be at the bottom of her bag, so it would look like she had dropped it in there a long time ago and then forgot about it.
Caspian nodded at me, to signal that I should keep distracting them. Thankfully both Amber and Janet were sitting across from me; the only way they would see Caspian is if they swivelled around completely.
"Thanks for giving me Asher's phone," I smiled. I couldn't think of anything better to say.
Janet nodded, not helping with my attempt to keep up the conversation.
"So, have you seen that new movie?" I asked, praying that she'd at least pretend to be nice to me and not chase me away. "The one with the girl and the boy and ... the other guy."
Janet opened her mouth to say something, before shutting it again, probably convinced that I was insane. To be honest, I didn't blame her. I looked at her, willing her to respond to me. Her long black hair was secured with a claw style clip and her makeup was lighter than usual; without all the makeup her skin wasn't as perfect as I had once thought. There were a few dark marks on her cheek and her forehead.
"Are you talking about the Fault in Our Starts or The Notebook or The Kissing Booth?" Amber sarcastically replied. "They all have a boy and a girl, and another guy."
"None of those are new," I fired back. "And I was talking about the new Spongebob movie."
Probably not my smartest move, because Caspian bit down on his lips to stop himself from bursting into laughter.
I shook my head. "Yeah, I totes ship Spongebob and the squirrel." I threw in some of the slang I had learnt from Chrissie.
"I don't believe this." Amber flipped her ponytail. "Come on Janet, her weirdness might be contagious."
Caspian gave me a thumbs-up, before quickly walking to the other side of the cafeteria and turning to face the wall. I waited until Janet and Amber had left, before walking over to him. They looked like an odd pair: Janet with her jeans and Amber with her mini, miniskirt.
"Spongebob and the squirrel," Caspian quoted me, doubling over with laughter.
"I give myself A plus for that distraction," I told him.
"I give you an A plus plus," Caspian retorted enjoying himself immensely.
"Thank you," I responded, placing a hand on his chest. Caspian placed his hand over mine.
"What's so funny?" Chrissie asked, having just entered the cafeteria. "I could hear you roaring from across the room."
"You didn't hear?" Caspian feigned surprise. "Spongebob's marrying the squirrel," he declared, before rolling on the floor with laughter.
Chrissie raised both her eyebrows in confusion, before looking at me. I shrugged in reply, not willing to revisit the embarrassing scene.
