Chapter 62
Chapter 62: Casualties
"He'll be fine," was Lewis's verdict.
"I tried to tell her," Caspian told him.
"You come in here oozing blood, and except me to believe you're okay," I replied, speaking for the first time since Lewis came to help. Unlike me, Lewis was able to compose himself fairly quickly. He attended to Caspian's cuts, which left me free to look the other way until all the blood had been contained with multiple bandages.
"Don't worry." Rosalind squeezed my hand. "I was like that the first time Lewis walked in dripping blood everywhere." She had already dressed for bed and didn't have enough time to cover up when I burst into their room, panicking about Caspian. She stood there in nothing but a thin nightgown
"The first time?" I asked, disbelief covering my face.
"Blimey." Rosalind bit her lip. "You think stuff like this doesn't happen all the time in a place like this?"
Caspian noticed the expression on my face and tried to stand up. I put a hand on his chest and pushed him back onto the bed. "Don't you dare." I put on my best 'mom' voice.
Caspian rolled his eyes, but he ended up doing what I told him to.
"Will you two be ok?" Lewis asked as slipped his arm around Rosalind's waist.
I nodded my head, watching as they headed out.
"Well," Caspian stated, "now it's just you and me."
"And are you going to tell me where you went?" I asked the question that had been bothering me for some time. "How did this happen?" I gestured towards his mommy-wrapped body, complete with bandages of all colours and sizes.
"It doesn't matter," Caspian replied, his eyebrows furrowed as he concentrated on something just above my head, hoping I'd let it go. But he obviously he didn't know me well enough, I never let anything go.
I crossed my arms across my chest, making it clear that I wasn't going to budge until I got my answer.
Caspian sucked a deep breath in before exhaling "A couple of people owed Victoria money," Caspian told me.
"And she sent you to do her dirty work?" I asked, shaking my head.
"No, she sent Amber," Caspian corrected me. "Who sent me, because she threatened to tell Janet about, and I quote," he made bunny ears with two of his fingers, "our conspiracies."
I winced. "I'm sorry," I apologised, blaming myself for getting him caught up in this whole thing with Janet.
"It's not your fault," Caspian replied. "I was the one who told Amber. I thought she'd believe me."
"Just out of curiosity, if Amber had gone instead of you, would she be...?" I gestured towards Caspian's wounded body.
Caspian surprised me by laughing, but stopped shaking when the action caused him too much pain. "Those guys wouldn't have beaten up a girl," Caspian clarified. "Amber like most of the girls here, have their..." he paused, "as you would call it, 'charisma'."
A shiver ran down my spine.
Caspian chuckled as my face paled in colour. "I know something that'll cheer you up," Caspian suggested. "I picked up Janet's phone on my way there and surprisingly, it didn't suffer any casualties."
I climbed into bed next to Caspian and curled up into his side, careful not to make contact with any of his cuts. "I would have preferred that the phone suffered instead of you," I said.
"Don't you want to see the phone?" Caspian bit my earlobe, already anticipating my reply.
I shook my head. "Tomorrow." I put my palm on my mouth to stifle my yawn.
"It's almost tomorrow," Caspian told me.
"Which is exactly why we need to sleep," I replied.
Caspian laughed quietly, before tugging the blankets up to cover both of us and pressing his lips to the crown of my head. "Goodnight," he whispered.
I changed my position, so that I could give him a quick peck on the mouth. "Goodnight."
