Chapter 34
Chapter 34: Arrested
Caspian and I were escorted to the police station in the Sheriff's cruiser. Turns out Caspian's plan had backfired. While we were in the room with the files, one of the other doctors had called the police. And now Caspian was arrested. I wasn't sure if I was as well, but I assumed so: I was his accomplice after all.
"I'm sorry," Caspian whispered into my ear, his breath the only warm thing in the cool car. His handcuffed hands sought mine. I was surprised that I wasn't in handcuffs as well.
I smiled at him. What was done was done, I couldn't change it. Caspian had been an idiot, but hopefully he wouldn't be paying for it with a long jail sentence.
"I trusted her because she kept the Stingers safe all these years. We all should have been arrested by now." He whispered all this into my ear, to make sure no one heard us. "But if there was a slight chance she was a criminal, I needed to know. If she was behind bars, then she couldn't force other families to give up their children." He rubbed his thumb across the back of my hand. "No one deserves to suffer the way I have."
I rested my head on his shoulder. He didn't need me to say anything, he just needed me to hold him and comfort him as best I could.
The cruiser abruptly stopped. The door was opened, and Caspian was pulled out. I winced at the way he was dragged. I waited for the same to be done to me, but it turns out I was allowed to tag along behind the Sheriff.
As we entered the police station we were met by Lewis's confused gaze. I was grateful to see that he hadn't been shifted to the jailhouse in Chicago as yet, but it was only a matter of time. The door to Lewis's cells was opened and Caspian and I were thrust in. The Sheriff left us, probably to go and consult with his co-workers.
"What did you guys do?" Lewis's face was still bleeding, and the left side was swollen. It looked to me like it was infected, and I could only pray that it I was wrong.
"Caspian almost shot a doctor at the morgue," I replied, wondering who I would use my one phone call on. I couldn't call my mom, she'd probably have a panic attack; especially since she had warned me to stay away from the Stingers. My dad was out of the question; he'd keep me under house arrest for the next seven years of my life. If I had been arrested a couple of months ago, I knew who I would have called: Asher.
"I wasn't going to shoot him," Caspian argued. "I was just trying to scare him."
"I know," I admitted. The cell floor was hard and uneven; I could feel the concrete digging into my knees. I wanted to stand up, but didn't..
Caspian's hands, now released from the handcuffs, cradled my face. He moved his face closer to mine, so that his breath tickled my cheek.
Lewis made a gagging sound, reminding me of his presence. "Cut the lovefest, you two."
Caspian rolled his eyes at his friend.
"Why were you guys at the morgue anyway?" Lewis enquired. "I never fancied taking my girlfriend to the morgue for a date."
"Victoria told us Newton's alive," Caspian replied, running his hands up and down my arms.
"Impossible." Lewis shook his head, disbelief evident on his face.
"Couldn't find an autopsy report for him," Caspian stated.
"Doesn't prove anything." Lewis bit his lip, but the action caused him too much of pain. He winced; if I had blinked, I would have missed this short show of pain. I saw how much pain he was in, and how he was trying to mask this physical pain.
"We found out Asher was killed." I switched the topic of conversation. "He died of an overdose; he didn't commit suicide. And Sheriff Matson had the autopsy report, but he didn't give it to my family."
I wasn't sure if Lewis's eyes were big because he was shocked with this information, or because he already knew and was shocked I had found out. He remained mute, refusing to spill his thoughts on the matter.
"This is so messed up." Caspian ran a hand through his hair, his forehead creasing.
"Not to mention the fact that Asher's blood type was recorded wrong," I added.
"I know Asher didn't commit suicide," Lewis finally spoke. "He had a plan to run away. He had a bag stashed in the forest, with his passport and ID and other supplies."
"New York?" I enquired. I wasn't the least bit surprised that Asher wanted to leave Sunset Coast, but I was surprised that I knew nothing of his plans. If he hadn't been killed, he still would have left me.
"I'm not sure," Lewis answered.
"Do you know where this bag is?" I asked, hoping we could find the bag and search for more clues.
"He took me there once," Lewis explained. "But I don't remember the way. I do remember that it was buried by the foot of a pear tree."
I nodded my head. I needed to search the whole forest looking for a single pear tree. It would be like looking for a bobby pin in a field of knee-high grass.
"Bro," Lewis addressed Caspian. "Victoria and Matson are dating. Saw them snogging the other day." Lewis went on a tangent. He chuckled, signalling that he found the whole thing very amusing.
