Chapter 31

Chapter 31: Spells

"You seem preoccupied," Caspian observed as he traced my jawline with his index finger. "Anything I can help with?"

"No," I replied, smiling at him to try and convince him.

"Don't lie to me." Caspian kissed the corner of my mouth. I wanted to tell him, really, I did, but he trusted Victoria. Wait, Victoria wasn't the suspect anymore; well at least not the prime one. If Caspian trusted her, I think I could as well. Maybe she could help us, actually make that help me, get Lewis out of jail.

"I need to speak to Victoria," I winced, hoping his reply wouldn't be the same as the first time I asked the question.

"Maddie," he breathed my name, relaxing into one of the leather couches at Rogue 24.

"Please," I begged, knowing this was the only way I would get a chance to meet with her. I mean, I couldn't just storm over to Stinger HQ and demand a meeting with the Queen Bee.

"Absolutely not." He clenched his jaw, signaling any further mention of Victoria Herim, would turn into something ugly.

"Fine." I crossed my arms over my chest and pouted; it was a childish move, but it was my last resort.

"Don't be like that." He gazed down at me with pure adoration in his blue eyes.

"Like what?"

"Like you're mad at me," he replied.

"I am mad at you," I fired back.

He put his palm underneath my chin and forced me to look at him. I was instantly under a spell. Was he Harry Potter? Well, his witchcraft was well developed and working well on me. One look into his ocean eyes and I wanted to drown in them, and to never come back out. He swept a few stray curls out of my face.

"Still mad at me?" he whispered into my ear.

I nodded my head, knowing he already knew I was lying.

He chuckled and brought his face closer to mine. I tilted my face up eagerly, waiting for his lips to meet mine. I closed my eyes, only to hear a loud slurp that sounded like someone draining their milkshake. I opened my eyes and was surprised to find that Caspian's face was nowhere close to mine. He had dodged my lips, so that he could pull his on a straw.

He raised an eyebrow.

"My kiss?" I asked.

"I thought you were mad at me," he laughed.

"'Were' being the key word." I wrapped both my arms around his neck. "Please take me to see Victoria," I batted my eyelashes, trying some spell casting of my own.

He sighed. "Fine."

"Please," I pleaded with him. "Wait, did you say 'fine'?" It had taken a while for his words to sink in, since I had expected a clear and definite 'no'. Waving a wand was easier than it looked.

"You're going to go anyway," he replied. It wasn't a question, so I wasn't going to tell him I had no desire to walk into Stinger territory without a bodyguard. He had agreed to take me and that was what truly mattered.

"Come on." I stood up, before he could change his mind.

"Now?" he enquired.

"Why waste time?" I grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the exit.
