Chapter: 14
Days fly when your life is going as perfect as it can be. However, the definition of perfect can be different for everyone.
My definition of perfect is waking up with a smile on my face and going to bed with a smile on my face. Because I know no matter how my day is going to be, but at the end of the day, I have someone to hold me.
Because knowing that you have a shoulder to lean on after a tiring day is nothing less than a blessing.
Adam and I, we, both share a strong bond of friendship between us, which makes it easier for us to sort out our issues. Since we have got married, touchwood, we hardly got into any serious argument.
Somewhere, I believe the reason behind this is Adam. He is a really understanding person and never hesitates to bend over backward to ensure that the other person is okay.
I am afraid, that some people might take advantage of his understanding nature. But then I am there to make sure nobody mistakes his goodness for his weakness.
If anybody messes with my husband then I am going to screw up their entire life.
Sometimes, I do feel that I am overly possessive when it comes to Adam. But then, who won't be if you are married to a gem of a person plus a good looking one?
A rare combination but I am lucky to call him mine.
One of the many things, I love about him is that he never shies away from asking for help from me. If he is not able to do anything, he will straightaway call me. It makes me feel like he genuinely considers me as his equal. Sadly, this quality is not possessed by many men.
My phone rings startling me as I lift my eyes from the incomplete design in front of me. A smile appears on my face reading Adam's name on my phone screen.
"Okay, so this is the smile I can't see that comes to your face when my name flashes on your caller id." Adam's voice snaps my head towards the door, to find him standing in the doorway as his cellphone is pressed to his ear.
"Adam!" I exclaim grinning widely.
Walking around the table, I throw myself into his awaiting arms and pull him into a hug.
"I didn't know you were coming today." Leaning away, I cup his face in my hands then lightly pecks his lip.
He was gone to meet his parents who live in another state. He was not supposed to be returning before this Sunday but he got back two days earlier.
"Something came up at work, so they called me early." He shrugs, as he again hugs me, "I missed you, beautiful," he whispers while resting his chin on my head.
"I missed you, too, Adam." I sigh feeling happy to have him back, "Even more than I can tell."
"Hannah, how's the design coming along?" I hear mom's voice but she stops when she sees Adam.
Releasing me, he loosely places his arm around my shoulder as mom walks to my office.
Her glasses resting on the top of her head, while there is a stack of papers in her one hand and a pen in another.
"Adam, when did you get back?" She smiles, coming out of her boss mode and shifting to her motherly mode.
"Just today." He smiles back.
"Beth, I need your permission to take Hannah out for lunch." He gives her a charming smile.
"Yeah, sure." She nods her head, then turns to me, "Hannah, take a one-hour lunch break. But I need this design to be completed by today only even if you have to work late." She slips into her strict boss mode and it took everything in me not to roll my eyes at her because I know then I will have to face the wrath of not only a strict boss but a very annoyed mom, too.
"Okay, Mrs. Prescott, you will get this design on your table by today." I obediently nod my head.
Her face softens and she gently smooths my hair making me smile at her.
"Inform me if you are staying late, then even I will stay with you." She fondly looks at me, "Because after five I am just your mom, who can't leave her daughter alone."
Actually not only with me, but she is like this with every one of her staff. Whenever anyone stays late she stays with them, to help them with their work. But the only difference is that she feeds me with her hands while I work. She is really strict when it comes to work, but also has a soft heart of a mother.
That's why everyone fears her, but at the same time, they love her too.
The phone in her office blares, she hurriedly goes to answer it after saying a quick goodbye to Adam.
"So, will you tell me the actual reason behind this sudden lunch plan?" Keeping my palms on the table, I lean forward while expectantly looking at Adam.
He is trying to behave normal, but he can't hide from me that something is troubling him.
"Is everything good, back at home?" I ask, thinking maybe his worry is related to his parents.
"Yeah, everything is absolutely fine at my parents." He nods his head, hearing this I relax a little.
"Then why do you look troubled?" I place my hand on his hand gently.
He sighs and shakes his head and forces a smile on his face, turning his palm upward he entwines our fingers.
"Let's just now enjoy our lunch, then we will talk about this later." He squeezes my hand lightly.
"Okay." Pressing my lips together, I nod my head.
Even though I have lost all my interest in lunch, but I still want to spend time with him. Maybe he needs some time to gather his thoughts that's why he is asking me to drop this topic for now.
I will not lie, half of my mind is trying to figure out what is the matter. Because this is the first time, I have actually felt that he is worried. I want to know the reason but at the same time, I want to give him time to tell me on his own without any pressure.
"Hannah." Adam's voice brings me back from my thoughts, "I love you."
The smile on his face even pulls my lips into a smile. Because this is the first time since we are here, his lips have a genuine smile.
"Well, it is relief to know that at least your worry is not related to me." I nod my head lightly laughing, "For once, I was thinking that you have found someone better than me and decided to kick me out of your life." I joke, which earns me a chuckle.
"That is something which highly impossible." He shrugs, "Because all I want in my life is you, for me, you are it." He gazes into my eyes making my heart clench in a beautiful way.
I try to push down the heat which is threatening to crawl onto my face which obviously doesn't work as he starts to laugh.
"I think I should get back to work, otherwise, I will have to stay late." Clearing my throat, I inform him.
He pays our bill, as we walk outside the cafe which is a few blocks down my office.
"Adam, I know something is bothering you." I glance at him, "If you don't feel like sharing it now, it is okay. But promise me, if you ever feel like talking to someone, that someone will be me." I hold his hand, pleadingly.
"Hannah, there will be no one other than you with whom I want to share my troubles." He squeezes my hand reassuringly, "I am just trying to figure out some things, my mind is a mess right now." He runs his free hand through his hair while shaking his head.
"Okay, we will talk about this tonight. Because I think I need a best friend talk." He quietly laughs sounding a bit nervous, "Be prepared to listen to my rant, best friend." Leaning forward he plants a quick kiss on my forehead.
"Just tell me, do I need to prepare myself to kick someone's ass?" I arch my eyebrow playfully, "Because that is what I am going to do with the person who troubles my best friend."
Throwing his head back, he laughs while saying something under his breath.
"I will see you tonight at home, Hannah." He shakes his head at me, still smiling, as he drops me off to my office.
"I love you, Adam!" I shout, abruptly, after walking slightly away from him.
His eyebrows shoot up in surprise as his cheeks slightly darken with this sudden attention on him as everyone around him pauses to look at him.
He tries to glare at me, but a small smile break on his face when I wink and send him a flying kiss as I walk inside my office with a wide grin.
