Chapter 63
<—————————————>

Maggie

"Is he dead?" I questioned Raven, who remained as complacent as ever while Luke tried to drown Levi.

Raven pulled her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose to get a clear look, then waved it off. "He'll be fine."

Kimberly chuckled. "You're a little too calm about your boyfriend drowning, Raven."

"It's the insurance money," Jax called out as he passed us on his own floaty. Raven pointed at him, bumping her margarita against his. "A girl has to have her priorities."

My eyebrow rose at her. "You guys aren't even married, though."

"Mhm," she pondered, leaning back until the sunshine fully hit her face. "I'll figure that part out later." Kimberly, Jax, and I laughed at her.

Kimberly was facing me in her floaty, ankles crossed and glasses off. Her eyes were shut, fully embracing the beams of sunlight. Kade made his way to her side, a grin raising the moment he got to her, but I knew she wasn't aware of his plan.

Waves of water slapped against the back of my floaty, then. My smile raised at the buzz of my skin; I knew who it was, immediately.

Just as I went to turn, a strong grip closed around my wrist. I didn't have time to recover, before I was being yanked right off of my floaty.

I fell into the water with a gasp of surprise. Strong arms wrapped around my figure a moment later, lifting me back up with a chuckle to follow.

Luke dangled a sexy grin at me. "Hey, gorgeous."

I smacked his his chest with a huff. "I'm going to kill you," I hissed at him, despite how much it tickled my heart.

Our friends' laughters tossed through the air until I turned to glare at them. They continued on anyway, earning a scowl from me.

Kade sent a look to Kimberly, lifting her sunglasses from her face with his index finger, then turning her head to him. Her smile lit up the moment she saw him.

"Was that funny to you, sweetheart?" At her nod and laugh, his lips curled into a mischievous grin before he nodded, dropping a hand to her floaty. "Yeah?"

Kimberly's eyes went wide with panic. "Kade, don't you dare—" Kade tipped her floaty over, cutting her speech in half.

All of us laughed until she came up with her anger intact. Even pissed, she was adorable. Kade grinned back at her, tugging her to him until he could hug her.

In the corner of my eye, I caught Raven being pulled off of her seat, but was swept up on Levi shoulders, next. He gripped her ankles to keep her in place, their laughter mingling right into the others.

Kimberly tried to maintain her scowl around a smile as she glared back at Kade. "I'm getting you back for that."

His grin widened at her, using one hand to move the strands out of Kimberly's face. "How so, baby?"

She glanced over his shoulder to look at Luke and Levi. "Do you guys have an extra room for the night? He'll be needing it."

"What?" Kade's snarky expression wiped right off at her words, instead leaving behind a mix of panic and incredulity. His face fell at her. "Hold the fuck on. Absolutely not."

I laughed, then felt a tug on my arm. I knew who it was.

I forced my gaze into a glare back at him. "Don't think you're off the hook, prick."

Luke sent an adorable smile my way that had my heart skipping. "I wouldn't think of it." His hands grabbed at my arms, linking them over his shoulders then dropping his grip to my waist.

I scowled. "You're not making me falling for it—"

My words were cut short as he tugged me into a kiss. Even with my attitude, I couldn't stop my reaction. I looped my fingers around his curls, pulling him in deeper.

The taste of perfect was all I could focus on. The beat of my heart seemed to worsen to a thundering pulse the longer our kiss continued.

"Ah," I heard Jax sigh from our side. "Young love. How beautiful."

I chuckled, looking to him. "Jealous?"

He tilted his margarita at me, lowering his sunglasses until I had sight of his green eyes. "Don't worry about me. I have my own husband to go home to."

Luke and I laughed at himI had texted Tony to ask him to join us, but he was too busy getting ready for the family trip he and Jax were talking, sadly. He had baked a bunch of desserts to give Jax to bring along as an apology though, something the boys had gobble up, immediately.

I released Luke with a peck to the cheek, then swam over to my brother, who was by the pier. Once I reached him, he slammed his palm into the water to splash me.

I swiped at my face, leaving behind a scowl. "You're such an ass."

He pointed at me, a grin growing on his lips. "And don't you ever forget it."

I laughed, knocking him in the shoulder so hard, he had no choice but to tumble off of his floaty. His laughter slipped, his face falling with shock before his sunglasses and his body went with it and right into the water.

"I might drown you if you stay under too long," I teased, but before I could act on the threat, I was getting yanked under, again. A hand had grabbed at my ankle, and they didn't let go until I was fully submerged.

Once I made it back up, I swept my hair back, my gaze already set in a glare. I jerked around for Jax, but he didn't come up with me so it couldn't have been him.

Once I searched the spots closest to me, I caught the culprit.

Kimberly was grinning at me, a gleam of mischief in her eyes. "I couldn't help myself."

I narrowed my eyes in a playful glare, already swimming over to her. "Really?"

Before she could get away, I jumped her, sending the both of us under the water with bundles of laughter to follow. Raven jumped in the mix once she caught on, tangling all three of us up until we were a complicated string that could barely be unraveled.

"I hate the both of you so much," Kimberly got out past her laugh, pushing her soaked hair back.

Raven and I attacked her again, swarming her with hugs. Even though she claimed anger, her cheeks went flushing with laughter as she wrapped either arm around us both.

"We love you, too," Raven teased, leading us toward the men, who were attempting to drown each other, again.

"Why won't you go down, damn it!" Levi bellowed, his face flushed with frustration as he attempted to get Luke under, who was fighting him off while trying to keep his hold around Kade, who was fighting both Luke and Levi.

Luke had Kade in a headlock, while Levi was trying to shove Luke underwater, but was getting forced down by Kade in the mix. It was a hilarious, tangled, mess.

Amused, Kimberly and I started our swim in the direction of the pier. Jax was sitting on it now, having the time of his life sipping my margarita.

Jax grinned down at us from his spot, handing Kimberly's drink to her. She thanked him with a smile, but his hold remained on my drink.

I tilted my head at him with a scowl. "Are you planning on giving my drink back anytime soon?"

"Yours?" he questioned innocently, tilting the glass. "I didn't see your name on it, little sis."

Planting my hands against his legs with more pressure than necessary, I hauled myself out of the water until I heard him hiss out a curse of pain. As soon as I was up, I craned my body to help Kimberly out.

I turned to search for Raven, but she was too busy trying to learn how to backstroke from Levi, who was being adorably patient with her, despite her curses. His humor hung in place as he grasped her flailing arms to stop her from panicking in the water.

"Hey, Jax," I called out.

Placing his phone to the side, he craned his neck to me, and placed a hand over his eyes to avoid the stream of sunlight. "What?"

I smiled. "I hope my drink was worth it."

Roughly, I shoved my foot into his backside. Since he was practically hanging off the pier, he went tumbling right in, sunglasses and curses against my very existence in tow.

Laughing, Kimberly and I took a seat in two of the lawn chairs situated a bit on the grass, right before the pier begins. The boys had brought them out for us in case we wanted a snack break.

We both glanced over Luke and Kade, who were fighting each other to try to get to us first.

"Move the hell out of my way, Luke," Kade hissed at Luke who snapped back, "You're the fucking idiot who won't speed the hell up." One at them shoved at the other, a mess of curses and tangled limbs following along as they continued their fight.

With a laugh, I turned to Kimberly, who was sweeping through the large, dark blue cooler we had packed with refreshments and snacks. "They're spoiled, aren't they?"

"Hell yeah they are," she agreed around a chuckle, nodding. "It always amazes me when I remember how scared the people around here are of them. How crazy they'd feel if they knew that big, bad Kade Ryder was just upset last night about not getting a longer goodnight kiss from me." Once she came up from the cooler, she offered a lemonade to me.

I laughed, taking it from her. "Your boy, too?"

"Absolutely," she mused, pulling out the wrapped sandwich Kade made for her, and nodding at me. "Wanna split it?"

"Thanks, but I'm waiting for dinner with Luke." We we're supposed to go out tonight, again.

Her grin stretched wide at me before she moved it to Luke, who currently had Kade's head in the water. "Dinner, huh?"

It took longer than I liked to admit to tear my eyes away from Luke's backside. Any sight of him was as satisfying as the last. "Mhm. I'm trying to save my appetite."

Leaning back into the lounger, a kind smile lifted at me. "I know I've said it a million times, but I'll say it, again. I'm real happy for you, Maggie."

"Thank you," I responded, feeling my shoulders relax as I looked to Luke, but my body reacted all the same. "I've never felt like this for anyone or anything before, but here it is." A smile pasted itself onto my lips as my heart jumped. "It's honestly the most best and scariest shit in the world."

Kimberly nodded in understanding. "That's okay, and it's okay to be scared shitless at first, too. I know I was."

"Seriously?"

She scoffed, pausing on her unwrapping. "Are you kidding me? It was literally the last thing I expected, but there I was, suddenly hit with it all and more." Her smile warmed at Kade's backside, a calm, infatuated glaze washing over her features. "That was the thing, though. I didn't have to run right into it all by myself. Kade was right there, just as scared and confused as I was about it all, if not more."

I crossed my feet at the ends, nodding along to her. It was helpful.

Her smile softened as she turned it to me. "Like I said during the party, though, it's all inevitable," she shrugged. "Being scared is fine; staying scared though, doesn't bring you shit, except lost opportunities and chances. I wasn't losing the best one of my life. It was the first one where I'd found a safe place to breathe, to just be me and not have to worry about wearing a mask, any longer. Kade took it off when no one else even knew it was there. He helped me find that breath of air that I never thought was there before, and I hope and pray that I did the same for him."

My heart tightened at her confession, since I knew how corresponding it was to mine. As I had claimed, Luke had been the person to lift the mask that I thought was glued shut. He was the one to help show me the pathway to...me. The real me. Not the one I'd convinced everyone else of.

It wasn't just that, though. In him, not only came a lover, but also a best friend, a confidante, a chance to breathe, and every single thing that made my soul whole, for the first time. My heart breathed for him.

Kimberly chuckled, dropping her gaze to her sandwich. "Sorry if I sound all sunny quotes or something. I just want you to get everything you deserve, because it's a lot." She stretched an arm out for me, pulling me in for a side hug. "And, I always want to see my girls get it all."

My arm tightened around her. "It goes the same way for you, hun. I want nothing, but the best for you and Raven."

It was true. I knew how much she battled, but still managed to hold up strong, and as sweet as ever through it all. I was so thankful and proud to call her a best friend, and a sister, really.

"Listen, I love you more than life itself..." she teased. "But, if I don't get a bite of this sandwich soon, I might lose it."

I laughed, encouraging her along. While she ate, we continued on with our conversation while watching over Raven and the boys in the lake. Kimberly threw the last of her sandwich back before adding a different conservation point.

"So..." she questioned, using her band to tie her hair back, again. "Are you and Jax okay, again?"

I nodded, smiling at his backside. "We are." Right now, he was attempting to trick Raven into drowning herself now that Levi was distracted in trying to break Luke and Kade's fight, murder attempt up. "I was dealing with some things that I didn't want to burden him with, but only really ended up fucking myself, honestly."

Kimberly nodded slowly, zipping the sandwich bag up then placing it back inside the cooler. "Is that why you were avoiding all of us so much?"

I whipped my head at her, shocked. "What?"

She waved my surprise off. "It's cool." She flicked her head at me. "I figured it out when you stopped answering our calls and texts, I just couldn't place why."

I blinked at her, flabbergasted. The wall of shock crumbled just enough to say, "Kimberly—"

"Hey, Maggie, no." She turned to face me, dropping her hand to mine. "This wasn't me calling you out or anything like that. It was just me reminding you of your support, because you do have it." She squeezed my hand, smiling. "Don't worry about it. We all have our own shit, and sometimes want to isolate to deal with it. Everyone copes differently. I'll always understand that."

My chest fell with relief at her reassurance. I had hoped she never caught onto it, but I should have known better. As I said, Kimberly caught the small, meaningful things that no one else did. This was just one that I expected her to be more upset over, but luckily, it was the exact opposite.

When I tried to bring a smile to the conversation, it failed, so instead, I nodded in understanding.

"But," she continued, shrugging. Brown eyes raised to mine, and claimed my own for their attention. "You're not alone here, Maggie. Whatever it was, whether it still be going on or if it already happened...our love still remains the same. It always will. You come to us about everything or anything at all, and that still doesn't change. You're my sister before anything else, and I want to be there for you as much as you'll let me be. Raven feels the same way, too. You're our family."

I begged the burning behind my eyes to cease, but the more I heard her, the harder they pressed forward. I could see her gaze softening over once she saw the tears in my eyes.

I wanted to shout the words out right here. I wanted to tell the truth so bad. Saying it to Luke had done much more good than harm, so perhaps...it'd be the same to Kimberly and Raven.

A small sigh left me as I averted my eyes to our conjoined hands.

"Kimberly," I said, quietly. "If I told you the absolute worst, and honest thing about myself right now, would you still mean that?"

I felt her squeeze my hand the second she heard me. In my peripheral vision, I saw her scoot her chair closer.

"If you told me the absolute worst, vile, and most disgusting thing you think about yourself right now..." she returned, softly. "I would sit here, I would listen, and I would only love you even more for showing me more reasons of why that love stands."

Tears pricked my eyes at her promise. I wanted to listen, but my father was in my ear. Pressing the truth right back down my throat.

It was much more complex than telling Luke. I hadn't directly lied to him as I had Kimberly and Raven. I hadn't kept up the lie with him for over two years, either, but with them, I had. The lies had only stacked up from that timing, too.

I could feel Kimberly watching me, attempting to figure me out. I knew she was getting close, too.

At her close examination, I blocked all of the emotion off for my façade. I hadn't worn it so long around Luke, it nearly felt long to bare, now.

"I like dipping my fries in yogurt." The smile hurt to attach on, but I forced it up at her. "Terrible, right?"

Kimberly didn't fall for it. A frown downturned her lips at me. Her brown eyes studied me over for a sign, but she came up short. Just as her lips parted, a good distraction came in to save my ass.

"I'm heading out, guys," Jax announced, lifting his body over the pier. "Tony's waiting for me out front."

My hands fell from Kimberly's despite her flowing hagride. The moment Jax was in front of us, he shook his mop of hair, drenching the both of us.

I smacked his side with a glare. "You're an asshole."

Jax chuckled, leaning down to kiss my cheek, then Kimberly's. When he pulled back, he casted a grin my way. "You know you love it."

I rolled my eyes, standing from my chair to take hold of him. He was ready, arms open to wrap me in a warm hug.

"I love you," he said, squeezing me so tight, I could hardly breathe, but I wouldn't dare voice it. "I promise I'll call and text you every single day."

"I hate you, more." I chuckled against him, pulling back. "And, you better. I want to see it all." I didn't even know exactly where he and Tony were going, but Jax mentioned it being a couple of hours away. "Send me lots and lots of pictures, too."

Raven climbed up the pier to say her goodbyes to Jax. While her and Kimberly spoke to him, I stepped back to stop myself from rejoining them.

I couldn't give it my all just yet, but this was better than nothing. It was more than what I'd given for the past couple of months.

I just hoped it was enough. I didn't want him to feel or try to find any fault in himself over my fuckups. There were none at all.

"Norris," I heard a softened voice call from behind me.

A pleasing, homely feeling climbed up my backside, then my hurt as a whole. I turned around, but was met with a chest of comfort. I knew who it belonged to without even searching for a face.

Luke looked down at me, a frown framing his face as he glanced between my brother and I. "You okay, baby?"

I nodded to soothe the both of our worries. "Don't worry about me."

Luke gave way to a cute smile. "Fuck that." He pulled me In for a hug, dropping his chin to my head. His lips pressed against the side while he spoke, "I'm glad you two got to spend time together today."

I settled into his chest, relaxing into the pelt of my home. "Yeah," I smiled, shutting my eyes to relish in the moment. "Me too."

***

"Okay..." Raven trailed off, cherry-red tipped finger tapping at her chin as she examined the food cart over. "Sour or sweet?"

I finished giving the other employee my candy order, then turned to Raven with a sigh.

"You've asked us three times now, and still haven't made a choice," I chuckled at her. "Just pick one already."

"Exactly," Kimberly voiced around the bite of her pretzel. "Either you choose, or we drag you away."

"I can't choose," Raven scowled, glaring down at the options. "My sweet tooth is telling me to get them all."

The kiosk employee gave me my order, to which I thanked her.  "Then listen to it, you freaking lunatic."

Kimberly shot the employee an apologetic smile, one Raven scowled at, before sighing and ordering her candy. With a tip to the employee for dragging him on for so long, she turned toward us with an armful of candy. I let her drop it into my bag, since she was running out of space in her overflowing one.

Kimberly and I chuckled at her, until I said, "It's okay, Raven. You know we love your indecisiveness."

She chuckled, offering a piece of chocolate to us both. "Shoes next, right?"

Chewing on the chocolate, I glanced over the brightly lit store windows on either side of us, covered with half-advertisements and posters. "We've already been to four different places." Kimberly nodded in agreement, shaking her bag of new shoes for emphasis. "And, those are just the footwear stores. We're not even counting the other ones."

Raven drawled out a sigh, glancing over her fresh manicure that we all matched. Kimberly had chosen the pretty red design, and I chose our pedicures.

"And, none of them carried the ankle boots I was looking for," she grumbled, raising her hopeful eyes to us. "One more."

Kimberly groaned. "You've said that every single time." I nodded in agreement, "And, you bribed us half of those times." First it was free purses, then tops, and now we were here.

Raven beamed at us. "I'll get you both a free pair—"

I looked up at that. "I'm in."

Kimberly pointed out, raising a humored brow at her. "You know what you're doing, don't you?"

Raven shrugged. "Treating my girls to two new pairs of shoes?"

Kimberly and I laughed before I said, "You're a little scheming mastermind."

"Well..." Raven sighed out, a big smile rising over her lips a second later. Her hazel eyes raked either of us over with a mischievous glint to them. "It might be a little too late now, pretty ladies of mine. We're already here."

I didn't even realize until now that we were in front of another shoe store. Hell.

Raven looked between us, grinning. "You're both welcome for the now, three new pairs of shoes you bribed out of me." With a laugh, Kimberly and I followed her in, despite our fake grumpiness.

After swimming, we went to the nail salon to get matching sets of manicures, as well as pedicures. Since it was so close to the mall, we decided to come here, too.

We went for a small lunch at the food court, then ended up going back for frozen yogurt and the candy kiosk, too. Raven used the time to shop for some of Levi's present for their dating anniversary, while Kimberly and I ventured close by and shopped from the other kiosks.

We all came back with a number of bags, but the most oddest one was definitely Raven with a baseball bat. I had teased her by claiming fear at her using it on Levi's car, but she claimed it was a gift to him this time. We had been traveling and chatting the entire mall ever since then.

Luke, Kade, and Levi were at this type of bar and hangout spot, that was more of an extension of the cages—the underground fighting area they all used to participate in—than anything else. I hadn't asked too much about it, but Kimberly assured that it was fine. Levi had sent Raven a picture of them drinking, and smoking. Despite the grumpy, ready to bitch-slap anything and anyone attitude on their faces, they were fine.

The hangout spot was around thirty minutes from the mall. I knew because Luke had checked and stressed over the distance himself.

I made sure to respond to him, and his dithery messages. They came in an abundance, especially with the distance in between us right now, but I assured him that I was fine.

A mall was the most public a place could get, too. If my father wanted to get to me, he wouldn't make it this obvious, I hoped.

Things had been quiet with my father for a while, and I hoped and prayed that it would remain that way just for a little while more. Today had been one of the best I had in forever.

Though, I wanted Luke to enjoy his time with Kade and Levi just as much as I was doing with Kimberly and Raven. I knew what all of the boy's ideas of 'good time' involved before the girls and I came into their lives, but I wasn't worried about it. I trusted him when it came to remaining faithful.

Kimberly and I ended up finding a new pair of boots and heels, and Raven held true to her promise, adding them into her overflowing cart.

Still in the midst of my laughter, I turned, and caught Kimberly glancing over a setup of cute slippers with a thoughtful expression. When I stepped closer to her, her brown eyes slipped up to me. I already knew what she was thinking.

I flicked my head at them, a smile on. "Matching for girl's night?"

A grin raised to her face, causing me to match it as I stepped forward to grab my own pair. Since Raven was too occupied in the heel section of the building, we made sure to get a pair in her size, too.

After we paid for it, I nearly jumped out of my skin when Raven came barreling at my side, hauling at least three different shoeboxes with her. "Just look at these!"

I chuckled, pretending to glance them over. Amused, I raised my eyes to her glimmering ones. "Save yourself and us the headache, and just get them, Raven."

"Should I? Levi's gonna kill me for taking up all the space in our closet." Her face fell with conflict as she stared the shoeboxes over. "You know what? It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. He'll be fine." She dawned over it for a second more before turning in her rambles, and walking away from us.

Kimberly palmed her forehead, sighing in Raven's direction. "This girl of ours never fails to make me question my sanity."

"Agreed," I chuckled, taking my bag from the cashier. "Do you mind watching over my things for a second? I want to stop by the bathroom before we leave."

She waved me off, already reaching for my bags. "Yeah, of course. We'll wait for you here, so that you don't have to walk too far."

I smiled in appreciation. "Thank you."

After placing our things to her side, she took a seat next to them, then pulled out her phone to text Kade, most likely. At the blush and smile that followed once she read over the screen, I knew it was him.

Chuckling under my breath, I headed in the direction of the restrooms. As soon as we left the mall, I was taking the girls by Luke and I's to meet Fang, but my bladder couldn't take the wait.

The restrooms were on the other side of the mall, and with the traffic of people coming through, it would be a minute before I got there. With the urgency I had, though, I was planning to cut it in half.

The mall was incredibly busy due to the timing. Customers were flowing in and out like ants. Spring break was ending, so friends and families were attempting to stretch it out as much as they could. It was difficult to navigate through the sea of people, but I managed.

Since I was only a couple of feet away from the restrooms, I pulled my phone out of my back pocket at its vibration. I already knew who it was without looking, but when I did anyway, a large smile claimed my face.

Luke: Hey, angel.

Butterflies thumped around in my stomach as I smiled down at the message. My feet ceased in front of the bathroom door to get my response out.

Me: What are you up to, pretty boy?

Luke: Just missing the fuck out of my girl, honestly.

Me: Tough shit.

Luke: And, that sweet, polite, mannered mouth of yours, too. What would I do without it, baby?

Me: 'Lose it' better be your one and only answer.

Luke: Damn right it is.

Chuckling, I pulled the bathroom door open to enter, and thankfully, there was no one else inside. I took the time to glance over my phone, again. Luke had sent something else, too.

Luke: Movies, tonight?

Me: Before or after dinner?

Luke: Doesn't matter as long as I have you. I'll buy out the whole theater to make sure of it.

Me: Overdramatic now, Palce?

Luke: For you? Fuck yeah.

A blush pinched at my cheeks, a smile blooming the longer I reread his messages. I would reply after I used the bathroom, then return to Kimberly and Raven.

As soon as I was finished, I went to the sink. I didn't want to leave Kimberly stuck to the bags for too long, especially with Raven. That girl would rent out the mall for an entire year if we let her.

Just as I chuckled at the thought, I heard my phone vibrate, again. I turned off the running faucet, then grabbed the paper towels while taking the chance to glance over the phone, again.

Luke: The theater is ours for the night, gorgeous.

I laughed at his message. I hadn't expected him to actually meet up to his threat, but the end result was pleasing, so I was fine with it.

My fingers hovered over the keyboard as I started off my response. Before I finished, another message was sent through, but not from Luke.

Once it appeared at the top of my screen, I brought the phone closer for a read.

Unknown: See any monsters yet, sugar?

My limbs stilled at the message, as well as it's intention. That familiar dread that only my father could bring on crept up my facade until I was a trembling mess.

Reluctantly, my eyes swept over the message, again. Despite its bare surface of a threat, there was something behind it. It was subliminal. It was meant for me.

Monsters. Monsters...

In the dark.

The phone buzzed, again.

Unknown: How about now?

Just as the treacherous message added to the pressure in my chest, a sound that could be passed off as a very powerful, short-lived breeze swept through the bathroom. My head raised to follow in its direction, but before I could, the lights to the bathroom shut off with an audible click.

My body remained in place as I used my mind as an anchor point. That point being that the lights would come back on. Except, after playing a game of cat and mouse with hope and disappointment, I realized...

The lights weren't coming back on.

A gasp slipped from my lungs at the realization, but that was it. That was all I could give. The very organ was gone after that last parting gift, and I was pretty sure I went with it.

I couldn't see.
