Chapter 4 Part 27: Investigation Start
Your POV:
I knew very well that I should be looking at the Monokuma File right now, but what happened with Kokichi was still on my mind. I could still feel the slight pain from when he tackled me, and I didn't even know why I felt something touch my face.
Rantaro helped me up as Kokichi investigated Miu's body, only to come back soon after. Rantaro must've been upset with Kokichi for tackling me, but there were more important things to do aside from be upset. Sometimes others had to work with people who didn't seem the best to work with.
With these circumstances set in place, I knew what I had to do. I had to investigate the case until I was able to get a time where I would be alone with Miu. I wanted to protect everyone here, and through this gene... I knew I could. I had to do something about it. I would never have forgave myself if I couldn't do anything.
I knew the investigation was well under way. Kokichi already investigated Miu's body, so it was probably a better idea to check the Monokuma File with everyone in my group. That way, we could all see the information there as well as gather some evidence from that said information.
"Hey Shuichi, would you mind if I read the file?" I asked.
"Yeah, sure," Shuichi replied, "go ahead, I've already read the file."
Shuichi handed me the file after he finished saying what he needed to say. The thing I was used to seeing on these files was a picture of the person who was killed along with their basic information that was normally on a Monopad.
I noticed that Rantaro was looking over my shoulder to be able to read the file as well. I knew that I was safe when he was around. I directed my attention back at the file before scrolling down to see any key information about Miu's death.
"The victim is the Ultimate Inventor, Miu Iruma. The body was discovered in the computer room on the fourth floor. Approximate time of death is 6:30 a.m. There are no external wounds on the body."
That was all that was in the file about Miu's death. In the cause of death section of the file, it showed a picture of her dead body, and I could feel that nauseous feeling return. I now knew Miu was killed at 6:30 in the morning. There were also no external wounds on the body. That made me wonder even more on what her cause of death was.
"The time of death happened thirty minutes before now...while we were still in the Virtual World," Kokichi explained.
"I can't help but think that there's an ulterior motive to you wanting us to investigate with you," Rantaro replied, "so what do you want?"
"You guys act like I'm gonna get in your way," Kokichi replied with a smile, "you all don't have to be so wary of me! You guys can do what you've been doing before! I promise I won't get in your way! It's just...I hate lies so much that I tend to suspect others a lot."
As Kokichi said the last sentence, I noticed that a mischievous smile grew on his face. This led me to suspect that he didn't hate lies. Kokichi did have a tendency to lie a lot, so it made sense that he would lie about this. Kokichi told us that Kaito told us that he wouldn't team up with us for this case. That fact was true since Kaito did say that earlier. Kokichi then explained that he couldn't trust Kaito's words. That was apparently why he was keeping an eye out. He didn't want Kaito to bother us, and he proceeded to say that he was going to watch for Kiyo as well.
Shuichi and Rantaro seemed to be confused when Kokichi mentioned something about "keeping an eye out". Kokichi then told us not to take his words the wrong way. He was telling us that he wasn't trying to replace Kaito as our investigation partner, but he then took back those words in a weird way. He mentioned that he wanted to replace Kaito as my partner full heartedly and I couldn't help but feel nervous from those words.
It was like Kokichi was switching up how he felt. He would be cheerful but then act mischievous. Kokichi always mentioned that this was a game to him, but then he would act innocent as if he were a child. This was how I felt when he told us that he'd help us as much as he could. He then asked what we were going to investigate now.
It was like Kokichi was following us. It felt like he was following *me* for some reason. I however knew I got all of the information I needed from the Monokuma File. I still needed to somehow clear everyone out of the computer room in order to use my gene. For now, I would just keep the information from the Monokuma File on my mind. If a trial somehow came into place, I would need to recall this information.
•Truth Bullet Added: Monokuma File 4•
I knew that Kokichi investigated the body, but I felt like I should investigate her body as well. I didn't know if I could trust whatever Kokichi had to say on the matter, so I knew that I should investigate her body. It seemed that Shuichi had the same thought as me considering that he was walking over to where Miu's body was.
I followed Shuichi, and in turn, Rantaro followed me. As soon as I walked over to Miu's body, I noticed something a bit different. It looked to me that Miu somehow had more color in her face, but it could've been my imagination. I wasn't able to get any alone time in the computer lab just yet. I had a feeling that I was just imagining things.
I decided to dismiss that thought for now and worry about the investigation. I would bring up the fact that she had less color in her face later. Looking closer at Miu's body, I took note of the expression she had. Her eyes were wide open in a panic... it looked like she suffered a lot, and I noticed this as soon as I laid eyes on her corpse for the first time.
"Ewww, even though I've seen it when I looked at the body, Miu has such a grody expression," Kokichi said as sweat rolled down his face, "Miu must've suffered a lot. Nee-heehee... A vulgar death fit for a vulgar bitch."
I couldn't help but ball my fists as Kokichi's expression changed from worried to carefree as he said those words. I could feel myself start to tremble from those words. Even if Kokichi was joking, he went too far with it. I knew he enjoyed making fun of Miu, but what he was doing now was outright cruel.
"Kokichi..." I muttered, "you went too far, even if that was a lie... You should never speak about the dead in that way... even if you hate her..."
"You're sooooo right my beloved (y/n)!" Kokichi exclaimed in response, "you should never speak ill of the dead, no matter how much you hated them! Even if she was a despised, pathetic, dirty cum toilet of a person!"
"Kokichi, that's enough," Rantaro told him, slight signs of irritation in his voice, "I know you're not going to change, so please keep those thought to yourself..."
I knew Rantaro was right. I knew this fact even before this happened. That fact was that Kokichi would never change. I knew that no matter what... neither me, or anyone else could force a change that was unwanted by him.
Kokichi soon asked asked about Miu's cause of death. He mentioned that it didn't say anything about it in the Monokuma File. I realized he was right about that fact. The file only told us about the time of death. It didn't tell us about what caused her to die. After Kokichi finished his sentence, Keebo decided to step in. From the way he was talking, I knew that he had information that would help us out at least until I could get time alone with Miu...
Keebo first explained that he wanted to let us know something just in case it could be a clue. According to Keebo, he was the first one to log out, so he must've been the first one to see Miu's body that sounded absolutely horrifying...
"When I logged out, Miu was still wearing the helmet, and her body was contorting into this awful position..." Keebo explained, "Maki logged out after I did, and she helped me take Miu's helmet off. And then...she was gone."
"That sounds awful..." Rantaro muttered.
From the expression Keebo had as he explained what had happened when he logged out, I could see how much it effected him. He probably felt as if he couldn't do anything to save Miu. I knew that feeling all too well. I was sure everyone here thought about that as well.
Kokichi didn't seem to care about Keebo's words that much because he asked if that was a confession. Keebo asked Kokichi how what he said was a confession. There was no response from Kokichi. There was still the question of how Miu died. I was going to try to find a way to save her, before the trial could start. I really wanted to find out who made her suffer so much...
Seeing Miu's body up close gave me more information on what could be the cause of death. While I still didn't know what it was, I knew the pieces would somehow link this case together. It honestly had to. Everything that happened was still so weird. It was like the Virtual World was like Sword Art Online.
•Truth Bullet Added: Miu's Corpse•
"So, what should we investigate next?" Kokichi asked, "nee-heehee~I'm excited to find out."
"There is something that has been strange to me..." I muttered in response to that, "I can't help but link this to anime..."
"Care to explain...?" Shuichi asked in response, "if there is something that can give an idea of what's going on, it would be a good thing to hear all possibilities."
"So, there is an anime called Sword Art Online," I explained, "most of this anime takes place in a virtual world with headsets and connectors that connect them to the game. The thing about the game that the characters are in is that if they die, they die in real life. No one could leave until they completed the game. What if the Virtual World here is similar to that?"
"That is a possibility..." Shuichi muttered, "I do think the Virtual World was linked to Miu's death somehow."
"I heard (y/n) reference that anime a couple of times," Rantaro explained, "I think this was on her mind for a long while."
"The thing is, we can feel pain in the Virtual World, and it could be that you could die in it as well," I replied, "remember what the others said when we met up with them. They said that Miu's avatar wasn't moving, so it's obvious that she was still logged in."
"Nee-heehee..." Kokichi laughed, "maybe we should investigate the visors next. It's probably a good idea, considering we have a base theory."
"For once... I actually agree with Kokichi..." Shuichi muttered.
"So then it's settled," Rantaro said, "let's focus on investigating the visors. Maybe they have some clues that can either go with or against (y/n)'s theory."
I nodded lightly in response to that. Investigating the visors was going to be something that would be important to do. I had no idea if any of them were still plugged in. That could be possible, but I wasn't sure.
I walked over to the chair in which I sat during the time I was in the Virtual World. The visor was obviously the helmet that connected us to the Virtual World. I noticed that the cords in my helmet were plugged in. Taking a moment to look around, I noticed that some cords were plugged in around the room, but other visors had their cords removed. I was positive that the cords were unplugged after being logged out.
"I'm positive that they were unplugged after logging out..." Shuichi muttered.
"I agree," Rantaro replied, "I don't think it's possible for anyone to unplug the cords while being logged in."
Realization hit as Rantaro said those words. We were supposed to plug the two cords from the computer into our visors. The red cord was for consciousness, and the blue cord was for memory. I recalled Miu explaining that to us before we got in. It made me wonder...
'What would happen if someone accidentally mixed up the cords...?' I thought.
That question was actually asked by Keebo when Miu was explaining the directions for the devices. It was unknown to even Miu, considering that she told us that she never did that before. She did mention before going into the Virtual World that it would probably just get all glitchy. Before this all happened, she made a few weird lines on what could happen.
Maybe there was some sort of glitch in the system somehow. Shuichi seemed to voice that as well, but nothing was set in stone yet. I knew the device instructions would be an important conversation topic once I would be able to revive Miu. Either way, I wanted to figure out what happened. I would figure out what happened... no matter what. I wanted to find out who was behind making Miu suffer like this.
•Truth Bullet Added: Device Instructions•
I needed to figure out what we needed to investigate next. That was very important. Maybe talking to someone would prove to be very important in finding out what happened to Miu before I could get everyone out of the room somehow. I scanned the room with diligent eyes to see what was out of the ordinary in terms of this whole situation.
I took note of the seat I was, for that was where I was still standing. My eyes glanced towards Kokichi's seat in which he rudely stole from Tsumugi. When I looked at his seat, I saw a blue glint come from the seat. Whatever that blue glint was, it defiantly wasn't there before we logged in.
"Hey, what's that in Kokichi's seat?" I asked.
In response to my question, Rantaro and Shuichi glanced over at Kokichi's seat. Looking at them when I asked my question, I saw their eyes widen slightly. I knew what we had to investigate next. The strange blue thing on Kokichi's seat.
"I can see it..." Rantaro muttered, "I think we should check it out..."
I took a few steps closer to Kokichi's seat in response to Rantaro's words, and the source of the blue sheen I saw was a small bottle with a blue liquid inside. I felt like I saw that bottle before somehow. I felt like I somehow saw it when I was investigating a new area in the school that was on the fifth floor.
"This is yours...right, Shuichi?" Kokichi asked.
"Mine...?" Shuichi asked in response.
"No, I guess it's not yours, but it is from your lab..." Kokichi replied with a smile.
"I think Kokichi is onto something, even if I hate to admit it..." Rantaro muttered, "this was in the Ultimate Detective's lab..."
"The playboy has a way with words," Kokichi replied, "yeah, it's that poison."
"...So you know about this, Kokichi?" Shuichi asked.
"Of course, cuz I already checked it," Kokichi replied, "we are in a killing game, y'know? If there's poison and tricks prepared, then of course I'd investigate them ASAP."
"Is that—" Shuichi asked before he was cut off abruptly.
"Oh, it's not so I can use them," Kokichi interrupted, "I check in case someone else uses them."
I wondered if that was really true. My mind was wandering. Why would there be poison on Kokichi's seat? I honestly had no idea at this point. Every turn in these strange things happening was getting weirder and more dangerous.
"By the way, did you guys see the label on the back of this bottle?" Kokichi asked.
"The label on the back of the bottle...?" I asked in response.
I decided to pick up the bottle that was on Kokichi's seat to be able to look at the back of the bottle. The bottle had a warning on the back, telling me that the contents of it were very lethal. Who would've known...? I mean it's poison. Of course it would most likely be lethal...
"According to the warnings here, this poison is pretty lethal, and I'm sure my beloved realized that once she glanced at the label," Kokichi explained, "it becomes neutralized once it's mixed, so it has to be taken directly... But when it's taken directly, the victim will immediately die, even if they only sip a bit."
When Kokichi explained the poison more as I read the label, I realized that if someone could force the victim's mouth open, they could be killed instantly with this poison. Considering that we were logged in, and the visor wouldn't be able to cover our mouths, it would be a pretty effective way to murder someone while they were logged in. I really hoped that Miu wasn't killed by that poison...
"Kokichi, if you know so much, then why don't you tell us the symptoms this poison causes..." Rantaro muttered.
"I was already going to do that, playboy..." Kokichi replied, "it causes a small blood vessel under the conjunctiva to explode...which makes the whites of your eyes turn blood red."
I knew that what Kokichi was saying was defiantly important information. I needed to keep this in mind. The blue poison in this bottle needed to be taken directly in order to be effective, and the symptoms for this poison was a small blood vessel popping in the conjunctiva, causing bloodshot eyes. That was all the information we had on the poison so far, and that fact was obvious.
"Welp, that's everything about this poison," Kokichi explained, "nee-heehee...am I doing a good job? Maybe it's time for me to be acknowledged as a part of the group."
"I thought I remembered you saying that you *didn't* want to be my partner," Shuichi replied, "I think it's obvious that you wanted to be partnered up with (y/n).... I think everyone knows that."
"I'm not gonna lie when I say that I did want to be partnered up with my beloved, but..." Kokichi trailed off, "sometimes I lie without thinking about it."
"Seriously...?" Shuichi asked in response.
"W-We should probably get back to investigating..." I stuttered.
"Alrighty!" Kokichi exclaimed in response, "who brought the poison? Do you guys think the culprit did it?"
There wasn't enough evidence right now to pin the poison placement to the culprit. I knew that someone did place this poison on Kokichi's seat. I had no idea if it was the culprit of this case or not. For now, I needed to remember this information, so it could be used to decide on the culprit later.
•Truth Bullet added: Small Bottle of Poison•
There were a few things I had information on at this point, but there was still something on my mind. We went into the Virtual World to try and find the secret of the outside world, but it seemed that we weren't able to find it. We spent a ling time looking, and for what...?
There was still a lot of strange things that happened, both in the Virtual World and here. Kaito being a prime suspect because he was logged out abruptly... the poison on Kokichi's seat. The loud sound we heard from the chapel, including Keebo's voice... it was all so strange.
In my opinion... I thought that talking to Kaito about how he got logged out would be a good idea. I knew he was a prime suspect because he was logged out, but I couldn't help but think that he was innocent. Kaito always wanted to protect everyone, so it wouldn't make sense for him to kill Miu.
"Hey, guys!" Kokichi exclaimed, "I think we should talk to Kaito since he is a prime suspect."
"Just because Kaito was logged out doesn't mean that he did anything," Rantaro replied, "also, if Kaito needed to log out, wouldn't you see him in the salon because you were in charge of that area?"
"That is true..." Shuichi replied, "if Kaito needed to log out, he'd have to use the phone in the salon. That's the only way someone could log out. It's still strange...."
As if it was on cue, I heard footsteps come closer to us. It was most certainly Kaito. It was like that guy had an antenna on his head that picked up whenever his name was mentioned. I looked over in the direction that I heard the footsteps coming from, and surely enough... it was Kaito. He had a serious expression on his face as he walked over to where Shuichi, Rantaro, Kokichi, and I were.
"Guys, listen," Kaito said as he placed his hand on his head, "I gotta explain. Just so you guys don't misunderstand."
"What do you need to explain?" I asked in response.
"You're talking about how you logged out by yourself, right?" Kokichi asked, "O-kay! Let's hear it then."
"Wh-Why are you—?"Kaito asked before he was cut off.
"Feel free to lie, of course," Kokichi interrupted Kaito with a giddy expression, "exposing lies is the real pleasure of this game, after all."
I couldn't help it but have a nervous expression on my face as Kokichi told us that. I didn't think this was a game, but he did. He seemed to think it was fun to do this, but it wasn't. I knew my life was at stake no matter what I did, and I knew I could die at any moment. Even with that weighing heavily on me... I had to listen to what Kaito had to say. I needed to know his side of the story.
We all made it clear to Kaito to ignore what Kokichi was saying, and to focus on us instead. Kaito then explained that he didn't really get what was going on. According to his words, he was searching the rooftop. A bright blue circle appeared underneath him, and before he knew it, he was logged out. The same thing happened when I logged out through the phone in the salon, so I was wondering what caused Kaito to log out like that.
Kaito soon explained that he didn't know what to do after he was logged out. He took note that we were all still logged in, but he didn't know if he could log back in or not. That was what caused him to go back to his room to sleep, considering it was dawn. Those were the words he said, and that was his side of the story.
The body discovery announcement was what woke Kaito up, and that's when he ran to the computer room. Kokichi decided to ask Kaito if he noticed anything wrong with Miu, asking if he noticed if Miu was alive or not. Kaito told him that he really did not know, and Kokichi was still being difficult, saying that he needed to find a contradiction in his statement.
I couldn't be biased... I had to find out myself whether Kaito was lying or not. I knew this testimony was important information to keep. I had to get all of the information I could. I had to find a way to save Miu...
•Truth Bullet Added: Kaito's Account•
