Chapter 4 Part 21: Going into the Virtual World
Your POV:
Once I turned on the switch to the visor that was on my head, I could hear the sound of the visor powering up. There was a screen inside of the visor as well. This was like more of a virtual reality sort of situation. It was like having a headset on that had games for 360 view.
The screen inside of visor powered on, shades of bright electric blue and bright greens in my line of sight. I soon could see codes appearing on the screen. It was like stereotypical computer code font, and that was all I could see. The code's font color changed from a bright green to an electric blue.
The code was all around, some of it being small, and some of the code being a larger font size. The code seemed to be moving to the left as more letters and numbers appeared on screen. The code was moving faster and faster. My eyes started to ache as this happened. I had no idea why, but it seemed like I was trying to read the code like it was something I could understand.
It seemed when my head was aching from the bright blue code that was moving to quickly for me to process, it soon went black. A few moments passed by, and all I could see was pitch black darkness. After those few moments, a duller, darker electric blue faded into the screen, and what looked like a white crest appeared on screen. The crest had chains surrounding it as well as a star shape and what looked like the shape of Monokuma's red eye. Under that had the words "high school". I had no idea what logo that was supposed to be, but... I felt like it had something to do with Monokuma.
Soon after that, six words popped up on the screen, next to the crest. Those words were....
"Welcome to the Neo World Program........."
It seemed that in an instant, I wasn't in the real world anymore. That crest and those words were probably meant to be some title screen that popped up in games, but this was different... my mind and my consciousness were no longer in the real world... I was now in the Virtual World....
With a bright blue light surrounding me, I appeared in what looked like a fancy room. This room had a couple of couches, a coffee table, fancy rugs, and even more. Around the same time that I appeared in this room, others were appearing as well. Kaede, Shuichi, Kaito, Kirumi, Keebo, Tenko, Tsumugi, Himiko, Angie, Ryoma, and Rantaro were here... but something was off...
Everyone looked like chibi's with terrible video game graphics. In other words, everyone had the same traits that they had before arriving in the virtual world. A good example of this was the people who were here having the same hair color and style as they did in the real world. Looking down at myself, I knew that I wasn't spared from this. I could feel myself wanting to cry from how Miu deceived us about how we looked in this world.
"This...is..." Shuichi muttered.
"I guess this is the Virtual World..." Rantaro muttered, "Miu seemed to talk it up so much, but these graphics make me want to go back..."
I instinctively walked up to Rantaro after those words came out of his mouth. In a way, I kinda felt tricked by Miu. Rantaro was right when he mentioned that she talked up the Virtual World, but now it was obvious to me that it wasn't as great as she said it was. But in all honesty, if there was no killing or no Monokuma in this virtual reality, then looks was just a small price to pay for something like this. Everyone staying alive was more important than looks.
There was one thing I found very weird however. While I was walking over to Rantaro, it felt like I was actually moving my body in the real world. This shouldn't have been possible considering that this was a virtual world. It was strangely like the anime, Sword Art Online. The only differences here was the fact that the graphics were terrible, and the fact that this didn't have magic or magical weapons.
"I kinda feel betrayed..." I muttered before grabbing Rantaro's avatar by the hand, "I kinda feel like my self esteem is getting lower from how I look here..."
After grabbing the hand of Rantaro's avatar, I noticed something. It not only felt like I was moving my body in the real world, but I could feel the warmth of his hand. It was like I was actually holding his hand in the real world. It was so weird to me.
"(y/n) is right guys!" Tsumugi exclaimed, "it seems like...it's completely different from what we were told..."
"These graphics are really disappointing!" Himiko exclaimed, "how's this supposed to be better than the real world!? These avatars are disappointing, too! I wanted to have the face of a supermodel!"
"Don't say that, Himiko!" Tenko exclaimed in response, "these graphics may be disappointing, but you will always be a supermodel in my eyes!"
"I thought that you liked your face, Himiko..." Kaede muttered, "I still think it's very cute that Tenko is defending you!"
"I still have a robot body, though..." Keebo muttered, "I must admit, I was secretly expecting more..."
I looked over at Keebo in response to that. I was still grabbing the hand that belonged to Rantaro's avatar. I couldn't help it but feel bad. Keebo was obviously hoping for a change... it seemed like Miu decided not to give him something to hope for.
"I think this is weird..." I muttered, "it feels like I'm moving my real body, even though I'm only moving in this avatar... and also I can feel the warmth of Rantaro's hand, even though this is a virtual world. This really is like Sword Art Online..."
"I agree!" Kaito replied, "this feels weird. I can move this avatar like I could my own body, right? And with this body, I don't have to worry about all that stuff..."
"What stuff?" Shuichi asked in response to that.
"Uh...no, it's nothing," Kaito replied.
Kaito looked pretty nervous when he responded to Shuichi. I found myself very curious on what Kaito meant by things he didn't need to worry about. I had a feeling Kaito was hiding something from all of us. I had this feeling ever since the bathroom incident during our nighttime training.
Even though I wanted to know what Kaito meant by his previous words, that wasn't the focus right now. Right now, the main focus was waiting for everyone to arrive in the virtual world. So far, the only people that were missing were Maki, Gonta, Kokichi, and Miu. Kiyo wasn't here for obvious reasons stated by Miu before we even considered doing this.
Before any of us could say anything more about Kaito's words, a flash of blue light appeared, teleporting someone to our meeting point. It was the same exact way that all of us entered the Virtual World. Seeing the familiar long pigtails and red school uniform, I knew it was Maki despite the fact that the graphics in this place were utter trash.
Looking at Maki, she seemed go be silent for a moment as she looked around. She was silent for a few moments before I saw blue and purple dread lines appear over her avatar. She defiantly looked like she wasn't happy about this.
"...I want to go back," Maki muttered.
"Th-That was quick..." Shuichi muttered in response to her words.
It seemed that there was another thing about this virtual world that I noticed. Similar to an anime, you could see dread lines. Another thing I noticed was the fact that dialogue bubbles appeared over all of the avatars' heads as they spoke, I was no different.
"Maki, I'm sure that Miu will explain this to us..." I muttered, "everything will be okay..."
After I said that, two more flashes of blue light teleported more people into this fancy looking room. As soon as the flashes of light dissipated, I saw the avatars of both Gonta and Kokichi were now with the rest of us. It looked like that the only one we were going to have to wait for was Miu.
"Ooohh, so this is the Virtual World," Kokichi said with what looked like a happy expression, "I see, I see."
Kokichi seemed to look around for a second. I noticed that while Kokichi was looking around, he turned in my direction, seemingly smiling at me. I was slightly confused on why he was looking at me, and it showed. Literally... not metaphorically...a question mark started hovering above my head, and it was weird to think that emotions worked in a similar was as an anime here.
"And this is my avatar. Mm-hm, mm-hm. I get it now," Kokichi said, "and my beloved (y/n) has her avatar. Nee-hee-hee~ what to do....?"
I was still slightly confused on what was going on. After Kokichi said his words, he did something I should've expected that he'd do. Kokichi seemed run up to me in a flash, jumping up and wrapping his arms around me as I fell to the ground.
Kokichi always had a tendency to jump tackle me, and I never knew why. I could feel myself wincing in pain as I felt the supreme leader's weight on me. He never left me alone, and I never got an answer on why... Kokichi always did this, and it always hurt so much.
'Wait a minute...' I thought, 'why did I feel pain...? Isn't this a virtual world...?'
I found myself having a slightly shocked expression on my face. This was a virtual world... why did I feel like I was in pain... why could I feel this. Kokichi seemed to be looking at me as this happened. He seemed to get up with a bored expression on his face.
"What a boring reaction..." Kokichi muttered, "I guess I'll just have to improvise~"
Kokichi seemed to hum lightly to himself as he walked back to his previous position. Rantaro had a sharp glare on his avatar features as Kokichi walked away.
"Oh, don't look so mad, Playboy," Kokichi said, "I'm just trying to test something here, but my beloved didn't give me the reaction I wanted."
"And what do you mean by that...?" Rantaro asked, "what are you trying to test that involves knocking my girlfriend to the ground?"
"It's none of your business," Kokichi replied with a mischievous look on his avatar, "alright Keeboy, you're up!"
"What are you talking about?" Keebo asked in response.
It seemed that in response to Keebo's question, Kokichi hit Keebo upside the head. Keebo let out a scream of pain in response to Kokichi hitting him.
"Ouch!" Keebo exclaimed, "what did you do that for!?"
"Ooh, so that hurt," Kokichi said with a smile, "That's more like it!"
"Oh, well, now that you mention it...I felt genuine pain just now..." Keebo muttered.
"I was trying to test that with my beloved, but she didn't give an exciting reaction," Kokichi replied, "isn't that just a bummer?"
I couldn't help but feel slightly offended by Kokichi's words. I felt that being angry and having a reaction would just cause Kokichi to pick on me more. Either way, from what he did to me, and he did to Keebo, or made me realize something.
Our senses had to be connected. If Keebo felt genuine pain from being hit, and if I felt genuine pain from Kokichi tackling me to the ground, that just had to be the case.
"That's pretty impressive though," Kokichi said, "if you felt pain, then that means our senses are connected. My beloved did wince, so that means she felt genuine pain as well."
"...Our senses are connected?" Maki asked in response to Kokichi's words.
"Nyahahaha!" Angie exclaimed, "it would seem that our senses are connected. What a mysterious phenomenon!"
After that was said, the same bright blue light appeared, telling us that someone was arriving in the Virtual World. The one person we were waiting for to get here was now finally here. It was most obvious considering the avatar that appeared had goggles as well as light pink or strawberry blonde hair.
"This place is so great, I come here all the time," Miu said with a happy expression on her avatar, "it's way better than the real world!"
It seemed that in response to Miu's words, Himiko instantly stepped into action. She called Miu a fraud because of the way the avatars looked, which was understandable. Miu replied with a scream of fear, and this was normally what she did in response to anyone yelling at her.
Tenko, Kaede, Tsumugi, and Kirumi decided to explain the fact that the graphics were terrible, and Miu gave the response that we all looked better as these avatars. Himiko and Tenko didn't seem to like that. I could feel myself having a deadpanned expression on my avatar as I saw Tsumugi and Kaede holding Tenko and Himiko back. I let out a small sigh as this happened. Like everyone else, I was wondering how our senses were connected to this Virtual World.
Maki seemed to be the one to ask this question. She asked how our senses were connected, and she stated that she needed an explanation. In response to Maki's question, Miu asked her if she told her. I never heard anything about how our senses would be connected to this world.
Before Miu could say anything else on the manner, I witnessed Kokichi hit Keebo upside the head once more. I couldn't help it as a tick mark appeared over my avatar, obviously signifying the fact that I was angry.
"Ouch!" Keebo shouted.
"Kokichi, if you don't stop hitting Keebo, I'll hit you myself..." I muttered.
"Awww~ it looks like my beloved is angry with me," Kokichi said with a mischievous look on his avatar, "in any case, this means that this goes way beyond the realm of virtual reality! We are *actually* connected!"
I could feel myself getting slightly more angry when Kokichi said those words. It was like he was teasing me, and I didn't really like it that much. Even though I was feeling annoyed, Kokichi was right. We were actually connected to this, but I still wondered how.
"We get it, so stop hitting me!" Keebo exclaimed.
"No can do!" Kokichi exclaimed in response, "even if they are avatars, I could never hit a *person*!"
"E-Even here...I can't escape your robophobia!" Keebo exclaimed, "and also your words are hypocritical considering that you tackled (y/n)!"
"Key word, Keeboy, *tackled*," Kokichi replied with a happy expression, "nee-hee-hee~I never hit her, so technically, I'm not a hypocrite!"
"Kokichi, shut up," Maki said with a harsh tone, "anyway...How are our senses set up?"
"When your avatar receives any sensory input, electrical signals are sent to your brain," Miu explained, "your brain interprets those signals as if it experienced that sensory input for real."
The way Miu explained it, I found myself understanding how our senses were connected. It was through electrical waves that transferred to our brains. After that, our brains would get the signal that we were in pain.
That led another question to form in my mind. If electrical signals could send pain, then would the same thing apply to a fatal injury. That's how it was in Sword Art Online. Even though it was an anime, I couldn't help but ask myself if it was possible.
Chances were... I was just overreacting. Paying attention to everyone else, I saw that Kokichi was telling Keebo that he could hit him all he wanted without any bruises. That was a bully's twisted logic in Keebo's words, and I agreed. After that, Gonta was confused about what was going on, asking if Himiko could do magic.
I knew very well that Himiko could use actual magic, even though she didn't do so that much. That wasn't the topic here though. Shuichi and Kaede were wondering how we were going to find the secret of the outside world, and that was something I was curious about as well. How were we going to find that secret? I didn't even know the layout of this place, let alone where to start looking.
Keebo mentioned that we needed a map of this world, and everyone else seemed to agree with that. After that, Miu let us know that she had a map of this world, but first she needed to warn us about something in this world. I wondered what she needed to warm us about.
Quite a few of the others told Miu that she should've been quicker on telling us what was going on. I agreed with that, but I was staying silent not to bug anyone right now. I was still next to Rantaro who was telling Miu that she needed to tell us everything before getting us to do anything. I agreed with that as well.
Miu responded to Rantaro's words with a dirty line about someone not being able pull out in time. I couldn't help it but have a deadpanned expression on my avatar features in response to that. I just wanted Miu to get to point already. I wanted to know what the rules of this place were. I didn't want Miu to beat around the bush anymore.
Some of the others seemed to be chatting amongst themselves. Himiko talking about how this was fraud... Kokichi and Kaito talking about how all five senses were connected to the avatars. I wanted to get answers about what was going on here. I gave Rantaro a small hug before walking over to where Miu's avatar was standing.
"Hey, Miu, what did you want to tell us?" I asked her.
"Well, it's not that big of a deal, but there is a special rule to this world..." Miu explained.
"What is that special rule?" Kirumi asked in response to that, "I'm quite curious."
"The special rule is...Objects here are unbreakable," Miu explained.
"When you say *unbreakable*, do you mean the objects cannot break?" Tenko asked.
"I'll spell it out for Tencrotch," Miu said in a snarky tone, "in the Virtual World, there are no rules that govern whether objects can break. So any object, no matter what it is, can never be broken. For example, if you stretch a rubber band far enough, it'll eventually tear, y'know? But here, the rubber band would just stop stretching at a certain point, and just not tear at all. For the same reason, your avatars can't get injured. You'll still feel pain though."
I felt myself starting to understand more of the layout of this place. I thought this information was actually a bigger deal than Miu thought it was. Himiko and Tenko voiced their concerns for that as well, yelling at Miu to tell her that she needed to tell everyone this information before hand. Miu replied to Tenko and Himiko being startled and terrified.
She explained that other than the objects here being unbreakable, the physics were the same in every other sense.
"...Oh, wait. That's right... There's a special thing about the avatars, too..." Miu explained.
"If there's more, then just tell us already!" Tenko shouted, "quit trying to con us like some lowlife degenerate male!"
"Heeeeeeeeee! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" Miu exclaimed in response.
"What is so special about the avatars?" Kaede asked.
"I was wondering that as well," Tsumugi replied, "I want to know what's so special about our avatars."
"To make things fair...everyone's avatar in this world has the same average physical strength..." Miu replied.
When Miu said that, I now had the understanding that we all had the same physical strength. In other words, no one was stronger or weaker than each other. In terms of strength, Gonta was by far the strongest one in the school. In this virtual reality however, he now held the same strength as the rest of us.
"Does that mean there is no discernible difference in our physical abilities?" Keebo asked in response.
"So in this Virtual World, I'm just as strong as Gonta?" Himiko asked.
"Miu did say that we had the same physical strength, so I think the answer is clear," Rantaro replied.
"Yeah..." I laughed nervously, "technically, we are just as strong as Gonta."
"What!? Gonta weaker!? That also cuz of Himiko's magic!?" Gonta exclaimed as tears appeared out of his avatar's eyes, "n-no! If Gonta not strong, Gonta no can protect everyone!"
I found myself feeling sad for Gonta. I could empathize with him on wanting to protect everyone. He had the physical strength to do so, but I didn't. I looked over at Gonta, trying to give him some motivation.
"Gonta, there are other ways to protect everyone aside from physical strength," I explained, "please don't feel down about how the way this world works."
"(y-(y/n)'s right," Himiko replied, "i-it's not my fault. That's... just how this world is."
"...Are those things the only things different about this world, Miu?" Shuichi asked.
"Y-Yeah...that's everything," Miu replied.
"By the way, how do we log out from this world?" Kokichi asked.
Even though I was slightly irritated with Kokichi, I was curious on how we were supposed to log out of the Virtual World. Miu seemed to forget that she needed to tell us that. Miu them told us how to log out.
She told us that we had to use the phone in this room. According to her words, all we needed to do was say our names. She also explained that the phone was fixed to this room, so we could only use that room to log in or out. The same thing applied to where we would appear when we logged in. It would always be in this room. Kokichi seemed to agree with this.
After that, Kokichi told everyone to not cheat and log out of the Virtual World. After saying that, he told us that we needed to find the secret of the outside world. His avatar looked pretty angry when he said that. I had no idea if he was being serious or not, but chances were... he was.
After that was said, Miu told us there was a map of the Virtual World posted outside of the room we were in. She told us to follow her to see it. Miu walked out of the room we were in, expecting us to follow. Everyone seemed to take a moment chatting amongst themselves, and I was no exception.
"(y/n), we should be careful..." Rantaro muttered, "this world still seems kinda fishy... there has to be something more to this world. After all, even if there aren't dangerous objects, it's still a Killing Game Simulator."
"Yeah, I know, Rantaro," I replied, "this reminds me of an anime, but fact is, I'm not sure how this world works. I think that we should just trust Miu. None of us know about machines like her, so we have to, at least for now."
Rantaro had a small blush on his avatar, which was the expression of happiness that was on these avatars. He did something he always did, ruffling the hair on my avatar's head.
"Alright, princess, I will trust her for now if you do," Rantaro told me with a smile.
"Hey, hey, hey!" I heard Kokichi shout, "will you two stop flirting for ten seconds? We need to find the secret of the outside world, so we need Miu to explain how this world works. We have to hurry, so please stop making everyone gag with your cheesy love bullshit!"
I let out an irritated sigh in response to Kokichi's words. I knew he was serious about this whole thing, but Rantaro and I weren't trying to be flirty. We were voicing our concerns to each other about what was going on here. The others were telling Kokichi to shut up in response to his words.
I, on the other hand, left the room to follow after Miu. I entered what looked like a fancy looking wooden hallway, and Miu was standing in front of paper pinned to the wall. Everyone was coming into the hallway, one by one. It seemed like that was another thing about this world. More than one person couldn't leave a room.
In any case... soon we would find out the layout of this world. We were all here, and we needed to know what was here and where to look. The only way we will be able to succeed is if we know what our location is. And that was going to be discussed moments from now. Soon... soon we would know where to start, and hopefully find the secret of the outside world.
So here I am with another update! I'm sorry that this seems kinda bad, but it should hopefully get better. Basically we are now in the virtual world, and I'm going to say the virtual world segment will be about 5 chapters.
To get through this faster, I might double up chapters to be around 8,000 words. And also, since it's June, chapter five predictions are due. If any of you are participating, please try to get those in soon, but no rush.
In any case though, we are getting closer and closer to the end. It's crazy to think that I've been writing this story for almost four years! It's been a pretty bumpy ride, but I hope you all will be excited for the end. Or sad.... idk...
So anyway, I will be back next week. I've started my new job, and it's a lot of fun. I look forward to see the art you guys make! I'll see you all next week! Ciao- yuki_no_fuyu
