Chapter 3 Part 22: Investigation Start

Your POV:

"So you're the one who's been trying to ensure that everyone survives this..." Shuichi muttered.
"Yes... that's my goal..." I replied with determination in my eyes.

That was my answer to him. Rantaro and Shuichi were both silent at this. I was slightly nervous about this as well. I had entrusted this secret to Shuichi, despite him lunging at Rantaro like that.
Shuichi must've been going insane at the thought of what could be going on. He was probably constantly thinking on why people were coming back to life, seemingly surviving fatal encounters.
He was probably trying to formulate a hypothesis on what was going on. Shuichi really was the Ultimate Detective in that trademark. He was observant and smart. It was no wonder he was suspecting that something wasn't right about this.
"(y/n), why are you hiding this from everyone?" Shuichi asked.
"Shuichi you very well know the answer to this," I replied, "the mastermind is most likely one of us. If I were to display that I can bring people back to life, the mastermind wouldn't like the sound of that. The mastermind would most likely kill me and try to frame someone else for it just like what happened with Rantaro."
"I see the point now," Shuichi replied nervously, "well I will not share this with anyone. I promise."
I smiled at Shuichi in response to that. I hope I could trust him. So far, Rantaro and Kirumi are keeping it under wraps, so now Shuichi would have to as well.
"(y/n), how do you bring people back with your tears?" Shuichi asked nervously.
I was slightly nervous at this question, despite the answer being pretty simple. I wanted to show Shuichi what I meant, but there was one thing I noticed about the resurrections I've been doing in par to all of the victims that I have revived thus far.
The duration of time that it'd take for the person to be conscious and aware would be at least a couple of hours after I cried on them.
During the first trial, Rantaro appeared as the voting time was about to be announced. It obviously took time for the damage done to him to go down. His skull was cracked and he was bleeding from the shot put ball. It would take time for the damages to be reversed.
For Kirumi's case, she had deep cuts all over her body as well as many broke bones. She endured a lot from the thorny vine she climbed and the circular saws that were used to maul her body and create many lacerations.
When she got to the top, the vine rope broke, causing her to fall from what looked like hundreds of feet to the ground with nothing to save her from the fall. Her broken bones were caused from the fall, and it took over a couple of hours for her to be awake and moving. This caused a hypothesis for how this gene worked to enter my mind.
The time based factor could be caused by the severity of the injury. That was my hypothesis. Kirumi and Rantaro's conditions were serious because it was an injury to either a complex organ like the brain, or the injuries were many and would take time to be reversed.
This brought what happened when Rantaro and I first discovered that I had this gene. Rantaro gave himself a paper cut to prove me wrong. When I cried on his paper cut, it only took a few seconds to heal up.
Angie had a couple of injuries from what I saw. She looked like her head was injured and her neck was the killing blow. The neck is only a small portion, so it might take quicker than Kirumi and Rantaro. I was hoping that I was right about this. If I wasn't, then I wouldn't be any closer to finding out more about this gene.
"Shuichi, I'm going to show you what I had to do to bring Kirumi and Rantaro back," I explained, "but after I do it, I'm going to explain some things about it too."
"O-Okay," Shuichi replied nervously.
With Shuichi's confirmation, I made my way go Angie's corpse. It was not something I wanted to see. I never wanted to see anyone of these people die, even if they did something to me. She didn't look like she was in pain either way, and that confused me. There should've been some sort of pain if her neck was attacked by something.
I was letting my train of thought get the best of me at that point. I looked at Angie once more and I felt the tears enter my eyes. With a blink, I released them, the tears soaking into Angie's skin. Almost right away, I noticed a little more color enter her face.
"How long will it take for her to wake up?" Shuichi asked as I got up from my position in front of Angie's body.
I let out a sigh. He was asking questions before I could explain anything. Luckily, his question was on board with what I was about to explain.
"Shuichi, I think the time varies based off of what injuries the person receives before death," I explained.
"I think I can understand where you are coming from," Rantaro replied, "when you healed my paper cut, it only took a few seconds."
"That's right," I replied, "I think that more severe injuries will take longer to heal. It took awhile for you and Kirumi to recover because of the injuries you both received."
"So it's time based..." Shuichi muttered, "that makes sense. It takes time for severe injuries to just go away."
"When I cried on Angie, color returned to her face, so I don't think it'll be very long for her to wake up," I explained, "that's what I hope of course."
"I hope so, too," Rantaro replied with a smile.
"All of this is just a hypothesis, so it hasn't been proven yet. If Angie wakes up soon, then my theory will be proven. We just have to wait," I explained.
I heard a knock on the door. I sighed lightly and went to open it. I saw Himiko there.
"Are you done paying your respects?" Himiko asked, "I really want to say goodbye to her."
"Himiko, I understand what you're going through. Come in, and hopefully something good will happen," I told her.
"I want the same thing that happened to Kirumi and Rantaro to happen to her. I want her to be okay..." Himiko said with a sad look in her eyes.
"Maybe if you just hope and smile, something good will happen Himiko," I said with a soft smile.
Losing friends... losing people you care about. Those are feelings I've been feeling all my life. The time that my friend got hit by a bus... people in general who ignore me and think of me as a criminal.
I never wanted that. I wanted to be able to do something special, and now I was able to. I just had to help make Himiko feel better until Angie wakes up.
"(y/n), why would someone kill Angie? She was trying to stop the killing game," Himiko stated with a sad look in her eyes.
"Himiko, people do things without thinking about what's right or what's wrong. The person probably thought of Angie's way as wrong, so they killed her..." I muttered.
I could've brought up that I was almost killed by Angie to become a sacrifice for the student council, but I held my tongue. It may seem too righteous for me, and I do deserve some type of good luck to happen, but I didn't want to make anyone unhappy.
When Himiko came in, Kaito came in as well, seeming more determined than usual. I knew we had to investigate before Angie woke up. That was what needed to happen. We needed to make it look natural until Angie can smile with us once more. That was my determination.
"We should probably start investigating now. It's important that we don't waste any time," I stated.
"I agree with you, (y/n)," Rantaro replied with a small smile.
I smiled at Rantaro in response to that. He knew just what to do to give me hope. Hopefully Angie would wake up before the trial started.
I walked up to Kaito, Shuichi, and Rantaro. I smiled at them lightly, knowing what was going to happen next.
"Alright you two. I'm counting on you both as my sidekicks. Let's end this nightmare all together," Kaito explained.
"Yeah...but, are you feeling okay, Kaito?" Shuichi asked in response.
"Yeah, are you doing alright? You still look slightly ill," I replied, knowing what was causing him not to feel so good.
"We seriously don't have time to be talking about this..." Kaito explained, "I mean I let you have all the time in the world to say goodbye to Angie. Isn't that enough? There's no way I'm gonna die here. I'm defiantly going to find the culprit."
"What Tsumugi said really concerned me though... I wonder what she meant?" I pondered, "well it shouldn't matter right now. We need to start investigating."
Tsumugi then came into the room. She repeated the same line I was concerned about. She was saying that it could've been the work of the transfer student. I don't know how that would've been possible.
At the mentions of the transfer student, Kaito almost instantly had a terrified and sick look on his face. This really started to concern me because Tsumugi was talking openly about something that scared him.
One thing struck me as odd though. I didn't think that the wax effigies had to be hung upside down to do the ritual properly. It was a ritual for only one person, not many. And the few other people Angie made the effigies of were still alive, including me.
Tsumugi was thinking that the ritual was done, but I couldn't confirm that just yet. When Tsumugi said that the ritual was most likely successful, Kaito let out a huge scream. This wasn't anything I've heard from Kaito before. It shook me to the core, actually scaring me half to death.
Maki told Kaito to shut up already. The screaming was probably annoying her, but it gave at least Shuichi and I concerned and scared looks. Kaito was saying that it was Tsumugi's fault for saying suck scary stories. Soon enough, Kaito did something shocking.
Kaito left the room, saying that he needed to get fresh air. I was really concerned about this, but I had a job to do. I had to investigate so no suspicion would fall onto me. I needed to act sad and depressed about Angie gone. I needed to sell out for at least a little while until Angie wakes up. I needed to do this for her at least.
A small conversation with Maki went by, telling us that we settled right into our sidekick roles. In a way though, I was the superhero to my own story... with a gene that can save everyone if I try hard enough. That's what I was hoping anyway. I wanted to save everyone.
With that, the investigation started. The obvious choice would be to start with reading the Monokuma File. If we get the information from that first, Shuichi, Maki, Rantaro, and I will at least know the basic information about this case. The basic information is like a small head start to help us figure out what happened. I read the file silently.

"The body was found in the Ultimate Artist's Lab. The time of death was approximately 2 in the morning. The cause of death is a stab wound to the back of the neck. The forehead also has a laceration."

So there were two wounds that we needed answers for. The stab wound that did the killing blow, and what could've caused the forehead laceration.
When reading the Monokuma File, I also noticed something slightly different than the last time. The time of death was included as well as the supposed cause of death, which was a stab to the neck with some sort of sharp item or weapon. The last case, there was no time of death because the time of death the last tome would've given away the culprit. I guess this time the time of death wouldn't give it away.
This did concern me though because of the fact that everyone was most likely sleeping at the time of the murder. If that's the case, then we wouldn't be able to rely on witness testimonies. Maki was saying the same thing as well.
The murder happened during the nighttime, just like the last one. Tsumugi was stating that if everyone would've followed the rules, this wouldn't have happened.
That was defiantly not true. This was what I was fearing would happen because of what the student council is trying to do. The student council rules, the role of those who weren't in the council. It was miserable indeed.
My only possibility for now until Angie wakes up is the hypothesis that Angie was killed by one of the student council members. Kiyo thought the same as well. So far, the only thing that would make sense is if a student council member killed Angie, but maybe there's something going on that is making us think that. Maybe it's because of the time of death.
More discussion happened from that saying, and Himiko's sadness showed even more. Himiko couldn't bring herself to investigate her friends body. I could understand that. When Rantaro was dead, I didn't want to investigate his body.
It hurt me too much to even do that. I smiled lightly at Himiko and gave her a small hug.
"Everything will be alright, Himiko," I told her, "I have a feeling that something good will happen. You just have to wait."
"What do you mean...?" Himiko asked in response, looking down.
"I mean that good things will happen if you wait. Angie loved you so much, so you have to fight for her," I told her.
"But I can't..." Himiko said in a sad voice.
"Yes you can. You have to believe in yourself though. You can do anything if you believe..." I said.
"If you really want to speak to Angie, I believe I do have the solution," Kiyo explained, walking into the room.
I was slightly confused. A lot more people were coming into the site where Angie was found. It was starting to give me anxiety. All I wanted to do was wait for Angie to wake up, but I couldn't just stop investigating.
"We can summon her spirit with a seance called The Caged Child," Kiyo explained.

Third Person POV:

"WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED!?" Kokichi exclaimed as he felt himself. in a rage.
With a burst of adrenaline, he knocked over the trash can containing a certain thing from a certain case.
Kokichi looked over at the round spectacle on the floor, taking notice of the features it had. It was a sphere, rolling slightly on the floor before coming to a complete stop. The dark gray/black hue it had with a metallic look as well. There were certain things sticking to the item. Pink fibers, seeming to come from some sort of pink outfit or accessory.
Kokichi smirked at it, before lifting it up to meet his gaze.
The item was the shot put ball used by Kaede, but her plan did fail. Kokichi decided he would discard it in his secret lair because no one would be able to get in without his card key.
"I guess I have to kill you again..." Kokichi said as he looked up at the blank screen.
It's been a little while since the connection went out, and it still hasn't turned back on. Kokichi knew it must've been the work of that device Miu made for (y/n). He knew that she was the key to all of this. All he had to do was prove it.
"This is MY game. I make the rules," Kokichi said to himself, "I will expose you (y/n). I will make sure that there's no doubt in my mind that you are the one causing my game to fail. Once I pinpoint that it's you... I'm going to take you out of the killing game... and make sure you can never save anyone again..."
Kokichi let out an evil laugh as he was saying this. He got his kicks from making people suffer. It was just who he was, and the dead coming back to life was really pissing him off, especially when Rantaro came back.
"I'm going to break you down, (y/n). I'm going to tear you down until despair is the only emotion that remains. Once you are broken, you won't fight back," Kokichi said, laughing evilly after saying that, "and once you realize that you can't do anything to stop me, I'll start my revenge on Rantaro. I'll kill him in front of you and make you watch. You'll be so broken, all you will do is obey my every command. Just you wait, my beloved. You can't escape the wrath of the mastermind..."

Your POV:

"The Caged Child?" I asked in response.
"Seance...? What are you talking about?" Maki asked, "cut it out already."
"Y-Yeah! This is no time for jokes!" Tenko exclaimed, backing up Maki.
"Oh, I'm serious..." Kiyo replied, "this is for our investigation."
When Kiyo said that, I felt a chill go up my spine. Was he actually being serious about this. A seance? That sounds like something for a cult. And why would he recommend this for our investigation. We don't even know if stuff like this will work. I never got the chance to test out the Necronomicon.
I asked Kiyo what he meant when he said that this would help with our investigation. His response was that if we performed the seance, the spirit of Angie could tell us who killed her. It would bring this case to a swift close, according to Kiyo.
My thought on the matter was the fact that there was a resurrection ritual, and now we are being recommended a seance as well. It was slightly weird to me on why Kiyo thought a seance was the only way to find out who killed Angie. It was very strange to me.
Kiyo explained that a seance uses literature from the world over, and that it's a genuine experience. Kiyo also informed us that he has performed in a great deal of seances in his time as well. That was very cool to me, but it also brought on suspicion.
Knowing all of this information could probably be a good part of the investigation.
Kiyo told us that we could use this seance to see if the so called transfer student did the murder. Himiko agreed to helping, and suddenly Kokichi rushed in, saying he would help too. He was getting bored apparently.
Tenko decided to volunteer herself because she didn't want Himiko to do it alone. Himiko was still looking very sad about what was happening, which was understandable.
The so called participants of the seance was now decided. It was Kiyo, Kokichi, Tenko, and Himiko. They all were going to participate in this weird seance, but there was a problem according to Kiyo.
There needed to be five people to do the seance, but they only had four. That was a slight issue when it comes to how the seance should be done.
Kokichi in a sad and disappointed tone of voice said that Kee-Boy could come too. He was talking about Keebo, and he was still trying to pick on him despite all that's happened.
Keebo was upset that he was being treated as a burden and being forced to participate. I would be mad too if someone forced me to participate in some sort of ritual like thing while being treated like someone who isn't cared for in life.
It's probably the worst feeling to have. To help someone, and feel like a burden while doing so. In that regard, I felt awful for poor Keebo. I really did.
"So then, we need a place to perform the seance... Where shall we do it?" Kiyo asked.
"How about your lab, Kiyo," Kokichi said in response.
"No...in order for The Caged Child to succeed, the room must be as dark as possible," Kiyo explained in response, "my lab has windows, so turning the lights off won't make it quite dark enough."
"Then...how about the empty rooms?" Himiko asked.
I knew right away what she was referencing. The three empty rooms that were also held on this floor. Those were quite dark, except for some candles in the room.
"You mean the three empty rooms on this floor, right?" I asked in response, "I mean those rooms do seem pretty dark aside from lit candles."
"Exactly... there aren't any windows there, so if we blow out the candles, it should be pitch dark," Himiko said, agreeing with my notion.
"Sure, I'm fine with that," Kokichi said.
I rolled my eyes slightly at that. What was this guy not okay with? He seemed to go wherever he wanted, not being nervous or scared just for the thrill of it. It made no sense to me on why he was this way, but I knew that I needed to be careful around him.
On a lighter page, Tenko agreed with Himiko's idea. It was nice that Tenko would do all of these things for Himiko. It was nice...
So with that, it was decided that one of the three rooms would be used perform The Caged Child seance.
"However...these are three empty rooms. Which one shall we use?" Kiyo asked.
"Um...the middle room. The middle room's always best for stuff like this," Himiko said in response.
With that, Kiyo said he'd make the preparations. He told us that he'd need our help carrying equipment. I refused politely because I wanted to stay with Angie. I told them that I still wanted to investigate.
Rantaro told Kiyo that he'd help me with it as well. That left Shuichi, Tenko, Himiko, Kokichi, Keebo, and Kiyo who was getting the stuff from the Ultimate Anthropologist Lab.
All I wanted to do was stay close to Angie, so I could be there when she woke up. That was my goal here.
Once everyone left, I was alone with Rantaro in the room. He smiled at me lightly as I took a look around the room to see where I'd investigate first.
"You seem very determined," Rantaro told me.
I held the device in my hand, still active and drawing out the camera wavelengths of the room.
"I am... I have to investigate until Angie wakes up. That's the only way it will make me seem innocent," I replied.
"Alright, I'll be here to help you though, so don't think you have to bear this alone," Rantaro told me softly.
"I know..." I replied with a small smile, "you're making me feel better about investigating this room... thanks..."
"It's no trouble... I will always help the one I love," Rantaro told me in response.
When I looked around in the room, I noticed a few things. The first thing was something that was piercing my effigy in the chest. This effigy was hung by the door, upside down. There was something long sticking out from it.
I almost instantly recognized it. It was the golden katana from Kiyo's Lab. I wondered what part of the case this linked to. The katana was here, and for no reason.
The set up was awfully weird too. All of the effigies were hung upside down, and I had no idea why. I don't know if Angie did this for the ritual.
"Whatcha looking at?" Rantaro asked me.
"Well this is a golden katana from Kiyo's Lab. It must have some sort of connection to the case," I explained in response.
"You're right, but I don't like the look of that katana stabbing the effigy that looks just like you," Rantaro replied, "maybe we should take a look at the full sword."
"Alright, I'll pull it out," I told him in response.
"If you say so," Rantaro replied nervously.
I grabbed the hilt of the sword, slightly tugging on it. I wiggled the blade, and it started coming loose. Once it came loose, I was met with a shocking sight.

The tip of the katana was covered in blood. Many alarms went through my head at this moment. This was the murder weapon. It had to be. This was covered in blood, so it had to be the sharp thing that was used to pierce the back of Angie's neck. It just had to be.
    "Is that blood?" Rantaro asked.
"I think it is..." I muttered in response, "and that can only mean one thing... this is the murder weapon..."
"You're right, (y/n)," Rantaro replied, "but how did both rooms lock?"
I thought for a moment. Rantaro was defiantly right about one thing. He was right about the mystery on how the doors got locked. I honestly had no idea how both doors locked from the inside, but there had to be some clues on how this person pulled it off.
I looked around the room once more. Information was filling my head at a decent speed. The effigies, the sword... there had to be more.
I looked over at the door with the push lock and I noticed something strange. On the lock, there was some sort of gold flakey residue. I saw this stuff before.
My mind flashed back to when we first discovered Kiyo's Lab. There was a golden katana, and Kokichi wanted to see it. A certain thing came off that katana. Gold leaf. It was so old that the gold leaf flaked off even if it was lightly touched. This brought a few ideas to my head.
The sword was defiantly used for the murder, but chances are it was used for locking both rooms. I didn't know how the culprit managed to do this, but I knew I needed to keep this information in mind for the trial. That's if Angie wakes up during the trial.
"So there's gold on the sliding lock door, so the katana might've been used somehow..." I muttered to myself.
"Hey, (y/n), don't push yourself too much on one piece of evidence. I'm sure it'll all link together in due time," Rantaro told me.
"I guess you're right," I said with a light smile, "I might be thinking about this too much. I'm just trying to figure out what the killer did to create the locked door mystery."
I really was trying to think on that. It was confusing that both doors would lock. If that were to happen, the culprit wouldn't be able to escape, or they'd have to leave one door unlocked.
The only way I could see this as possible is if they somehow had the key to Angie's Lab. The thing was that Monodam ate the key when we first discovered her lab, so that wasn't possible. The sliding lock could only be locked from the inside, however I felt like that was part of their plan. I just had to figure it out.
"If we think about this evidence in more of a combined sense, I think it'll make more sense," I explained, "I think that's why I sensed a combination with the sliding lock and the katana. There is one thing that strikes me as odd though..."
"I think I know what you're getting at," Rantaro replied, "it's the effigies, isn't it?"
"Bingo," I replied, "all of the effigies were hung upside down, and I don't think you needed to do that for the ritual. I need to get proof of that fact though..."
"Why don't you check the Necronomicon then?" Rantaro asked, "I mean it is in this room."
"Wait what!?" I exclaimed.
This made me want to check the room even more. I noticed a thick covered book on the floor, a few feet from Angie's body. It was exactly what I thought it was. Rantaro was right.
I needed to read the book to make sure what I thought was right. I had no idea what the process of resurrection this book had. Despite that, I was going to use the book after we settle this case. I had to try it with my ability.
"I think I should read it and get a better idea on what the resurrection method is," I explained, "it's important to do this so I can verify the observations I made so far."
"Alright, little miss anime detective," Rantaro teased.
I found myself blushing lightly at this. Why did he call me an anime detective. I wasn't a detective, so why.
With a blush on my face, I opened up the book to see what was in it. When I looked inside the book, I noticed that there were illustrations with the explanations on the pages. These pages had illustrations of Monokuma ghosts on them for god who knows why. I still needed to read the book.

"The Necronomicon Resurrection Ritual. Prepare an effigy of the dead soul you wish to contact. Everyone may participate. The size and shape of the effigy is irrelevant. Make it out of whatever materials you wish. If it's not obvious who the effigy's supposed to be, label it with the name of the deceased. After preparing the effigy, burn the Necronomicon to ashes. Use caution! Be mindful of carbon monoxide poisoning! Sprinkle the ashes on the effigy and repeat the name of the deceased three times. Then close your eyes and wait. After awhile... you should feel a light tap on your back. If so, that means the ritual was a success! The ashes are only good for one use. The ritual can only be performed once, so use it wisely."

After reading the book, I realized a few major things. The first thing was that the effigies didn't need to be hung up for this ritual. The book didn't even explain to do that. This was a major thing, so why did the culprit tie them up like that?
The ritual can only be done once, so I didn't get why all of the effigies had to be hung up. One was needed in order to perform the ritual, and it didn't need to be hung up.
The next thing I realized was that the ritual was not completed when I read the book, it said that the ashes could only be used once. This meant that the book had to be burned to do this ritual. The book was still here though, so something must've happened to Angie when she was trying to do the ritual. I had proof to tell Rantaro for sure. I needed to tell him that the ritual was not done.

We still had a chance to save Ryoma because of this...
