Chapter 2 Part 3: The First Flashback Light
Your POV:
"(y/n), Kaede, Shuichi, Atua has something to show you three!" Angie exclaimed.
Many thoughts flew through my head at that moment. Why did Angie come to get us? What could we have possibly missed while unlocking the new areas. Why didn't we notice anything sooner?
"Angie, what do you need to show us?" Kaede asked.
"Well, I was near this chest thing, and I saw you guys come down the hall. I want you all to open it," Angie replied, using her paintbrush to dawn her infamous thinking position, "Atua told me it was some kind of flashlight. He told me it was a special flashlight, and he wants us all to gather in the gym for me to explain the purpose on his behalf."
'So the Monokubs probably told you...' I thought.
I looked over at the overly cheerful artist with a sigh. I really hope she was telling the truth.
"You're sure that that flashlight thing in the case is important?" I asked.
"Yes, yes I'm sure!" Angie exclaimed in response.
"Then lets go everyone," I muttered with a sigh.
We soon started walking to wherever the artist would take us. We left the area with the Casino and Love Hotel, and we made our way back into the school. Once we got in the school, Angie led us to the second floor right away. Angie seemed very excited about showing us this strange flashlight because she was jumping up with each step.
Soon after that, we made our way to a dead end of a hallway near Gonta's Lab. At the end of the hall, there was what looked like to be a treasure chest. The chest was closed and basically boomed with the words, "open me".
"Is that the chest Angie?" I asked.
"That's right!" Angie replied, "go on! Open it! Open it!"
I was mentally groaning from Angie's enthusiasm. I don't think she's even considering the danger this could bring. This flashlight thing she's saying that's in there could be a motive to kill. Heck, it could even be a death ray for all I care.
Sweat started rolling down my face as I thought of each and every negative of what this thing could be. My eyes were widened slightly, thinking of every possibility. I felt a hand get placed onto my shoulder. I looked up to see Rantaro. He seemed slightly concerned, but he smiled warmly at me.
"Just open the chest (y/n). There is no need to be anxious over this. We can discuss everything after we know what it is, alright?" Rantaro asked with a kind smile.
I just nodded my head. I walked over to the chest and opened it. There was only one thing inside. It was something that looked like a modified flashlight. It was bigger than a normal flashlight, and it had a handle with an on button. It was some kind of flashlight, but I highly doubt it's used for lighting dark rooms.
"Nyahahaha! Now that you have to strange flashlight, come to the gym! Everyone should be there by now," Angie explained.
I sighed lightly. I obviously wasn't able to keep up with Angie's type of personality. She was clearly devout, and very happy about it. She used the excuse of her god for her personal opinions. She was also very optimistic, not even crying or frowning from everything we've been through. I envied her in the respect, but I couldn't just believe that she felt no sadness whatsoever.
We all made our way to the first floor, going to the gym. Everyone should've been gathered there according to Angie. As we walked through the halls, we never saw anyone along the way. That meant they were most likely in the gym, like Angie said. That was what I hoped.
Soon enough, we entered the gym, seeing everyone there. Some of the people looked very annoyed, such as Miu and Maki. I was guessing that they did have to wait awhile, so I never blamed them.
Angie went to the center of the group of people quite happily. She seemed to be skipping as she made her way over. She was definitely happy to tell everyone about the flashlight.
"Everyone! Gather 'round!" Angie exclaimed, "we all here? Good! Then let's bow our heads and pray to Atua."
"You're a real pain in the ass, ya know that!? Just tell us what you fuckin' want!" Miu shouted angrily in response.
"Alrighty then, check this out," Angie replied, beckoning everyone over.
Everyone obviously went to Angie's side. Angie showed everyone the strange flashlight we found in the room.
'I'm guessing she peeked inside the chest...' I thought.
Everyone was staring at the flashlight, trying to piece together what it could do.
"That is a peculiar-looking flashlight... So, what of it?" Keebo asked.
"Umm, I dunno what it is either. I inspected it pretty good..." Angie replied, "Nyahahaha, but in the end I couldn't figure it out."
"How were you able to inspect it when you went to get us to open it?" I asked.
"Atua told me to open the chest, so I did!" Angie replied.
That proved my theory correct. Aside from that, Angie told everyone she couldn't figure out what that strange flashlight was. It confused me too.
"So you couldn't figure it out?" Shuichi asked.
"So I asked someone for help!" Angie exclaimed.
"Wait a minute... you don't mean—" Shuichi exclaimed.
Suddenly, we heard the noise associated with death and destruction... the sound of Monokuma popping up into the room. Why did I have to be right most of the time...
"If somethin' has you worried, just let Monokuma take care of it!" Monokuma exclaimed happily, "if you don't know something, I'll tell you. If you need help, I'll help you."
I was unimpressed of this stupid monologue Monokuma was giving. It actually frustrated me.
"If you don't like something, I'll fix it. So don't get rid of it... please don't get rid of... me," Monokuma said sadly.
"Very bad when lady who act like that prays on you," Gonta replied.
"Huh? Do you know that from personal experience?" Tsumugi asked.
"Umm, Tsumugi?" Kaede muttered, "I don't even think he's had experience with that..."
"I don't think that matters," Rantaro replied with a serious look on his face, "so Monokuma, tell us what this flashlight is."
Monokuma seemed to perk up at Rantaro's expression. He even seemed very amused by it. Monokuma's change in expression was only visible in his nonverbal communication. He typically changed his gestures to fit how he was feeling. Average for a talking stuffed animal.
"Why, that's a Flashback Light," Monokuma said.
"A... Flashback Light?" Kiyo asked.
"Flashback?" Angie asked, "Light?"
"That flashlight doesn't shed light on darkness, it sheds light on your lost memories," Monokuma explained.
'Lost memories?' I thought.
What did Monokuma mean by "lost memories"? This confused me a great deal. As far as I was concerned, I remembered everything about my life. I remembered everything aside from how the hell I got to this school filled with murderous intent.
I honestly wondered if Monokuma was even telling the truth. Could a flashlight possibly bring back forgotten memories?
"Lost memories...?" Ryoma asked.
"You guys seemed concerned that you couldn't remember how you came to this school..." Monokuma explained, "but if you use the Flashback Light, you can remember everything!"
"Are you really sure about that?" I asked, "you could be very well lying to us."
"So it's your fault we don't remember when we were kidnapped, huh?" Kaito asked angrily.
"What did you do to us, and how did you steal our memories anyway?" Kirumi asked.
"Hmm, maybe if you use the Flashback Light, you'll be able to remember that, too," Monokuma replied innocently.
"We aren't playing these games Monokuma!" Kaede exclaimed, "just tell us how you took our memories!"
"Like I said, use the Flashback Light..." Monokuma replied.
"I honestly don't believe it. No way this flashlight will recover our memories," Maki explained.
"I honestly agree with Maki. It shouldn't be possible for that to happen," I explained in response.
It was true. I didn't believe that this "Flashback Light" could recover our memories. It seemed like some cliche trope that some magical item recovers the lost memories, or does something to help the person. I've seen many anime, and magical items were a common thing for magical girl anime.
Monokuma explained how there were many skeptics about this whole situation. He explained to us that this Flashback Light Can treat the symptoms of memory loss. If we are being honest, his claim sounded a lot more convincing now than it did before.
He then explained what the light does. The only issue with that was that he tried to explain it in one sentence. He cut himself off and basically sulked from how boring it was to explain al of that. He disappeared afterwards, leaving us in a state of panic.
After that, everyone decided to do a unanimous vote. Basically we each had to vote to use the Flashback Light or not. In the end, mostly everyone agreed to using it. Kaito steered everyone to that vote, Kaede backing him up. It even got me motivated to use it. It was the best way to find out what would happen, considering the fact that these circumstances aren't normal.
"Click!" Angie exclaimed.
A clicking sound echoed through the room. A blinding light from that flashlight flooded the room, everyone being covered by the light. My eyes widened as I felt information suddenly surfacing through my head.
Blocked off pieces of my mind had crumbled, leaving those parts wide open.
I remember everything...
I was running away... from a project known as the Ultimate Hunt. I finally knew what the Ultimate Hunt was. Rantaro was right to ask us all if we remembered this. He asked because it was something important.
Those who had Ultimate Talents were hunted down. No one was safe anywhere. Not me, not any one of us who had talents. I didn't want to live like that anymore. I had a solution. If I could just throw away my Ultimate Talent, I could just be a normal high school student. I could finally live a normal life.
My determination was set in stone. I went to a facility where I would use some new technology to make the memories of my talent hibernate. It was a gamble on whether it would work or not. It was a gamble I was willing to take. The determination took its course as I went through. I knew the matching couldn't take my memory away completely. They would just be suppressed by using my brainwaves. It was worth the effort... and it worked.
"I remember everything... I know what the Ultimate Hunt is..." I muttered.
Rantaro's POV:
"I remember everything... I know what the Ultimate Hunt is..." (y/n) muttered, shock present in her eyes.
I knew what the Ultimate Hunt was sure, but now I have insight on what happened. We basically ran away. A coward thing to do.
A lot more important matters are at hand though. I'm obviously different than everyone else. My Survivor Perk Monopad proves that to me. This situation made the message written on the Monopad more true.
The message came from myself supposedly. Apparently it could be a version of myself that's even smarter... my talent... I knew what it was.. or I was close to knowing what it was. I obviously survived something. That's why I have the survivor perk. How do I fit in this situation when I have all of this information. Something doesn't seem right about this.
I sighed lightly in frustration, trying to figure out what or could be. Everyone was in shock about the memories they received. I had no idea if they were fact or fiction. I guess I had to play along for now.
"Rantaro..." (y/n) muttered, "how did you find out about this before everyone else?"
Welp another chapter is done! Yay!
So I have a few announcements to make.
I'm going to extend the competition by one week. You'll have time to get more stuff in. This is all I can do.
Anyway! Chapter two is rolling. I wonder what's going to happen with Rantaro. He's already suspecting stuff lol.
I guess I'll have to write more!
Also I have a small challenge for any of you. Recreate a Flashback Light cutscene picture for (y/n). Anyone who does this will get a free art piece from me. This one has no due date. I hope to see what you all can do.
I'll update next week! Schools almost out, so I can update more! Ciao for now!- CRUSIFIXdroid.
