Chapter 1 Part 2: The Death Road of Despair
Your POV:
I quickly caught up with Rantaro outside of the gym door. I was still confused about what he said to Kaede and I.
"You both have what it takes to win," Rantaro told us with a creepy-like smile.
Those words just played in my head. It was confusing to me...
'How does his thought process work?' I thought to myself.
I looked at Rantaro and sighed.
"When I tell you to wait for me, please wait for me," I told him.
"Ah-haha, I'm sorry. I'm guessing you're confused about what I said correct?" Rantaro replied.
Rantaro and I started to walk together, making our way to the Entrance Hall and outside.
"Well yeah... I am pretty curious... why do you think someone like me can win this without killing or being killed?" I asked in response.
"Well it's simple. You're an inspiring girl and you are strong as well. You just lack the love for yourself," Rantaro casually replied.
Rantaro and I continued to talk about the issue of how strong-willed I could be as we walked outside to the backyard. He told me to keep trying to have more self confidence. He said he'd help me out with it. We soon walked into the building, two other people missing. Shuichi and Kaede.
Kaede and Shuichi suddenly walked through the doors. It struck me odd on how those two were always the last ones to arrive. It happened with the gym and here.
"Looks like we're all here. So, where's this manhole?" Rantaro asked.
"Umm... Over there, in grass," Gonta replied.
I looked over to my left, noticing the bronze colored manhole. It had something that looks like Monokuma's red eye on the lid. But, it was just as Gonta said. There was a manhole in the grass.
"An important hole near some bush!? Sounds familiar, am I right ladies!?" Miu exclaimed.
I looked down, blushing in embarrassment. I mentally cursed at Miu for saying that. It made me super uncomfortable.
"Awwww, this manhole cover looks heavy. Can we even lift it?" Angie asked.
"I'm sure one of us can Angie..." I replied.
"I can try," Keebo announced with a determined smile.
Keebo then placed his hands on the manhole cover. With all of his strength he...
"Grgh...! Grrrrrrrrrrrrgh...!" he groaned, trying to lift the manhole cover.
With all of Keebo's strength, the manhole cover didn't even move an inch...
"How embarrassing. It won't even budge," Keebo said.
"Huhhh? A robot's not even strong enough to move it?" Angie asked in shock.
"Oh, don't worry. My physical strength is approximate to that if a strong senior citizen," Keebo explained happily.
"Th-That's fuckin' pathetic!" Miu shouted angrily.
"I feel bad for you Keebo. I feel bad that Miu is insulting you... don't listen to her..." I said to Keebo.
"Thanks for your generosity (y/n).. th-the professor did not want a repeat of the tragedy that occurred during trial production," Keebo explained.
"Umm... Now I'm just plain curious about what happened during that trial..." Tsumugi muttered.
"Oh, then allow Gonta," Gonta said happily, "Gonta lift cover before to peek inside. Should be able to pick up cover too."
Gonta then placed his hands on the manhole cover. This time it...
"Upsy-daisy," Gonta said, lifting the manhole cover very easily.
"So easily!?" Tsumugi exclaimed.
"His strength...must be due to my magic. Yup...there's no mistaking it," Himiko explained.
"Ooohh! You're amazing, Himiko!" Tenko gushed in response.
"..What should Gonta do with cover now?" Gonta asked.
"Please leave it somewhere else. Be careful not to hit anyone with it," Kirumi replied.
"Um, actually...Gonta no can do that... Very rude to litter..." Gonta replied.
"Come on Gonta... that's not the issue here," I replied.
Gonta looked around, trying to find somewhere to put the manhole cover. With no where to put it, he begrudgingly tossed it aside. The manhole traveled five yards before finally hitting the ground.
"Kehehe...what wonderful strength. You could likely crush a child's skull with ease," Kiyo said.
"How ungentlemanly! Gonta NEVER do that!" Gonta exclaimed I response.
"Gentleman or not, *no one* would do that!" Tenko replied.
"But Gonta is sooo much more reliable than some bean counting robot and anime watching girl," Kokichi said happily.
"Are you...talking about me? Because I can count many things, not just beans," Keebo replied.
"I wasn't just talking about you. I was talking about the Otaku as well," Kokichi replied.
"Like I didn't get that... I would really appreciate it if you didn't insult people based on their talents," I replied begrudgingly.
"Th-This is kinda creepy... We're really going in here?" Tsumugi asked.
"I'm sure it's fine. At the very least, we definitely won't die down there," Kaito replied.
"If anything happens, I'll protect most of you! But the degenerate males are on their own!" Tenko exclaimed.
"Then...Gonta protect menfolk," Gonta shouted.
"Awfully quiet... Where are Monokuma and the Monokubs?" Rantaro asked.
"I was certain they would show up at some point and crush us like rotten gnats..." Kiyo explained.
"Nyahahaha! They probably haven't noticed yet!" Angie exclaimed.
"Then let's hurry before they show up to mess with us," Kokichi said happily.
We then went into the manhole, one by one. I was one of the last people to get down into the manhole. Once we got down, we were greeted with a dark, spacious area. I looked around the room. One of the things that struck me odd was the "Exit" sign that was pointing to a tunnel. I noticed that Rantaro was staring at the sign too.
"It's more spacious than I thought it'd be..." Ryoma commented.
"Yodelay-hee-hoooooo!" Kokichi shouted.
"What is this place...?" Maki asked.
"An old industrial passageway, I suspect... Perhaps factories once existed here?" Kirumi hypothesized.
"And this is all that's left of 'em," Kaito replied.
"Hey guys.. I hate to interrupt..." I muttered.
"Hey, take a look at this," Rantaro said, finishing my sentence for me.
I looked at Rantaro and sent a slight glare.
"What a considerate sign... Apparently, the end of the tunnel is the exit," Rantaro explained.
"I was gonna say the same thing, but you interrupted me..." I pouted.
"I had no idea the Otaku could look so adorable with that pout. I'm gonna melt!" Kokichi exclaimed, swooning, "but that was a lie!"
"I'm sorry (y/n). You're normally very quiet, so I thought I'd help," Rantaro replied.
I sighed, forgiving Rantaro, but I glared at Kokichi for trying to lie about me. I felt like he was trying to upset me.
"Hey... let's not change the topic! But what do they mean by Considerate? You don't think it's weird that someone went out of their way to write *exit*?" Tenko asked in response.
"Hah-haha! Don't piss yourself in fear! Your natural scent is bad enough!" Miu laughed.
"I-I'm not scared! And I smell just fine!" Tenko exclaimed in response.
"Well then, go on ahead. No point standing around here," Rantaro told us.
"Ah, yeah..." Shuichi replied.
"No need to worry!" Kaede exclaimed, "it looks a bit dangerous, but we're all Ultimates here! As long as we work together, everything will work out just fine!" Kaede exclaimed.
"Yeah. All we need to do is just work together. Everyone has a different strength. If we put all of that together, we can do anything!" I replied, trying to be more inspirational.
"That's exactly what I was gonna say! We're really on the same wavelength (y/n), Kaede! Gimme a hug you both!" Kaito exclaimed.
"Um..no," Kaede and I said at the same time.
"Typical degenerate behavior! You were trying to trick then into pressing their boobs against you!" Tenko exclaimed in disgust.
I looked at Rantaro and sighed.
"Nice job (y/n). You're starting to sound more confident already. But anyway... we gotta keep trying. Nothing's gonna change if we don't try," Rantaro said.
I nodded lightly, clutching on to the belief that we'd escape as we walked into the tunnel as a group. I looked around in shock. The tunnel was filled with many traps. Kaede and I led the others, trying to keep everyone motivated. Coin like bombs littered the cave.
Suddenly I felt something crash over me, lifting me up in the air. I realized it was a cage. I soon passed out after that.
Soon after that, my eyes opened. I was bewildered.
"What happened...?" I muttered.
"You're awake... Are you alright?" Kirumi asked me.
"C'mon Kirumi. Don't worry about the weak Otaku," Kokichi laughed.
I ignored Kokichi's comment, slowly getting up. I brushed my dress off and smiled at Kirumi.
"I'm fine. Is everyone else alright?" I asked.
I noticed that everyone was sitting on the ground soon after. I stumbled over to where Rantaro was sitting.
"Are you hurt?" I asked.
Rantaro and everyone else stayed silent. I sighed lightly as I sat down next to Rantaro.
"I don't think we should be sad about this... This is what Monokuma wa—" I tried explaining, cut off by the so called *convenient* entrance of Monokuma.
"Gee, this is quite the pity party you sadsacks are throwing for yourselves!" Monokuma exclaimed.
"M-Monokuma!?" Kaede exclaimed.
Right after that was said, the Monokubs appeared as well. They said their catchphrase that annoyed me to the core.
"Rise and shine ursine!" they shouted.
"Wow, you all look exhausted. Poor things. I feel sorry for you," Monophanie said.
"Sheesh, this place is filthy. It's murder on my cashmere skin," Monotaro complained.
"I bet Monodam is feelin' lucky right now! His body's already a cheap piece of junk!" Monokid exclaimed.
"Why don'tcha respond to him, Monodam? It'll liven things up a little y'know?" Monosuke explained.
"Tch... So you guys crawled outta your holes. I guess you finally noticed what we were up to," Kaito explained.
"...Noticed?" Monokuma asked in response, "I've known for a while that you guys would botch whatever escape plan you had."
"What?" Kaede asked.
"Y-Yeah, I also...kinda...pretty much knew, too..." Monotaro said nervously.
"... That's a lie," Monosuke said.
"If you knew all along, then this was just a trap," Maki said nervously.
"Then there *was* no exit! You tricked us!" Tenko shouted angrily.
"...No, there's an exit," Monophanie replied.
"I think you guys'll manage to reach it if you all work together!" Monotaro exclaimed.
"Yeah! There's nothing you 17 Ultimates can't accomplish if you work together!" Monophanie exclaimed.
"Puhuhu. And if at first you don't succeed...... try try again. Try as many times as you want until you accept reality! Ah-hahahaha!" Monokuma laughed.
"Kyahahahaha!" the Monokubs laughed.
They all then vanished, leaving us all confused.
"Nyeeeh, so we can escape if we work hard enough...?" Himiko asked.
"No way, you little moron! They'd be freakin' our if we could actually reach it!" Miu exclaimed.
I continued to listen to everyone. They let us try because they wanted us to lose hope.
"Instead of blocking off every exit completely, they leave that little bit of hope... they want us to be desperate to go home. Corner us mentally," Rantaro explained.
It was rotten... it was very rotten.... but we can't give up.
"Yeah, but we can't just give up..." Kaede explained, "right, you guys? I mean, we've only failed once, y'know. We can't give up this early, right?"
"But...isn't getting out of here impossible?" Himiko asked.
"No, it's not. It may take one more try or a lot more tries, but it's not impossible," Kaede replied, "forget about Monokuma. It doesn't matter what he says to us."
"I don't want to lose to Monokuma. I've already lost a lot I'll admit that..." I spoke, "I don't want to lose you guys. I don't want any of you to give up alright? We should refuse to lose to someone who's putting us through this!"
"Kaede..." Shuichi said with a smile,
"(y/n)..." Rantaro said.
"So let's all work hard to escape this place together. Like (y/n) said. We don't want to lose anyone! And once we get out of here and make it to the outside world... why don't we all stay friends?" Kaede explained.
"We should all stay friends. I can show everyone the wonders of anime..." I replied.
"...F-Friends?" Gonta asked.
"Well of course... after this whole situation... we could be stuck together like glue!" I exclaimed in response, "I mean, it's not every day that I get to be with other Ultimates! So what do you all say?"
"Hmph...that might not be bad. Being friends with you both," Ryoma said with a wink.
"Yeah. That's a great idea," Tsumugi replied.
"Then we've all the more reason to escape this place no matter what," Kirumi said.
"My body is ready! You can tell by how outta control my pit sweat is!" Tenko exclaimed.
"I'm so happy everyone!" I exclaimed.
I felt happy for once. It was a feeling I didn't want to cry to. I wanted to smile and ensure that everyone would escape. I felt like I had a purpose. I felt important.
"Isn't it premature to say what we'll do after we escape? Assumptions are all but useless," Keebo said.
"Geez, you're clueless... Why am I not surprised that a robot can't read the air?" Kokichi said in shock.
"Robots can read the air! Thanks to innovations in pollutant-detecting technology, I—" Keebo replied.
"Anyway, it doesn't matter if Monokuma says it's impossible! We'll show him what we can do!" Kaito exclaimed with determination.
"Yeah! You're right!" Kaede exclaimed.
"It seems like a pain...but I guess I'll try," Himiko replied with a smile.
"Yeah, lets work together! We messed up last time, but I'm sure it'll go well this time!" Kokichi exclaimed.
"I'm sure we'll be fine. A divine wind will blow through and lift us to victory," Angie said.
"Aaah, humanity is *truly* wonderful. The way you all confront adversity is beautiful," Kiyo explained.
With our bond even greater, we all headed back into the tunnel. I was certain that we could do it this time. But.... we all failed again. I woke up once again.
"Wh-What the—? And I was lookin' forward to a happy ending!" Miu said, sulking with mushrooms growing from her head.
"Not yet! We're just getting started!" Kokichi exclaimed.
"O-Of course! This will be...a piece of cake!" Tenko shouted.
"Gonta gonna escape. Become friends with everyone. Gentleman never give up!" Gonta said.
"This time...! This time we will reach the exit!" I shouted.
This time... these words carried me on as I stepped back into that despair filled trap. But... all of our efforts were in vain. Even so, we refused to give up. We told ourselves that we'd escape. We failed each time though. With every attempt, we repeated the words "this time" over and over again. But in the end, it was no good. Everyone was getting injured... everyone was tired. I thought we could escape if we never gave up. It made no difference.
"Failed...again," Gonta muttered.
"Damn it...!" Kaito muttered.
"I can't...go on..." Tsumugi explained.
"We can't give up!" I exclaimed.
"She's right... we can't give up. This time, we'll—" Kaede stated.
"...Knock it off already you two," Kokichi muttered.
"Huh?" I asked in response.
"You're both free to keep trying on your own, but forcing us to join you is basically torture," Kokichi explained.
"T-Torture?" Kaede asked.
"You know what really hurts? Being denied the right to give up in an impossible situation... you both won't let us give up and no matter what we say, it's you two who have the moral high ground... That...doesn't sound like torture to you? When you both say we can't give up, you're both not inspirinus—you're both strong-arming us!" Kokichi explained, "(y/n) I thought you'd be more understanding but I was wrong. You don't know what it feels like to be tortured! You're causing pain! Not taking it away! You say you've lost a lot, but now you're going to lose us too!"
Those words hit me like a knife. My eyes widened in pure shock. My figure started shaking lightly. Those words played again and again.
"(y/n), you are a failure..."
"You're the cause of everyone's suffering!"
"It's you're fault your family is gone!"
"You're such a nuisance to everyone you meet!"
"People only talk to you because they feel sorry for you!"
"You're better off dead!"
"Go die! No one will care if you do!"
"Go kill yourself! Nobody wants you!"
"I t h o u g h t I c o u l d h e l p e v e r y o n e..." I thought, "I am a failure... I'm better off dead. No one will care. People will be happy if I'm dead. My purpose is to die! I shouldn't exist! I hurt everyone! I DESERVE THE WORST DEATH POSSIBLE!"
I lowered my head so I was looking at the floor. I wanted to hide the emotions from everyone.
"Everything is my fault..." I muttered out loud.
"Huh?" Kokichi asked, being confused.
I clenched my fist, feeling light sobs trying to force their way out of my throat.
Light noises came from under me, something light hitting the floor, and disappearing into the ground with a light splash. Everyone looked towards me, hearing the noises. I knew I was crying. Because someone finally solidified my worth to everyone.
"I'm useless...." I muttered, "I'm worthless... I'm just wasted space..... I'm just better off dead!"
I started sobbing lightly, staggering to the ladder. I climbed up the ladder, keeping my face hidden.
"(y/n)...." Rantaro muttered sadly to himself.
Once I made it up the ladder, I staggered to the courtyard, staring at the stars as I poured my feelings out.
Hey guys! This is more of an emotional update. I love it so much!
