Chapter 4

"You have until Friday to read A Walk To Remember" Ms. Fritz announces.

"Doesn't she know we can just watch the movie instead of reading the book?" A student whispers. At least they think they whispered. I mentally roll my eyes.

"Don't think you'll be able to watch the movie to do your thoughts and debate on Friday either. I will know if you have." She randomly says. I guess they didn't whisper low enough.

"What if some of us already have read this book?" I question.

"I guess if you've read it already, you'll be prepared for the debate on Friday." She says while giving me a small soft smile.

"Kiss ass." Allie grumbles. The bell signaling it's the end of this period has rung. Meaning I will have to go to P.E next. Inside I'm mentally groaning and whining. I have no ounce of athleticism in my body. All the athleticism went to Silas, skipped me, and went to Allie. This is going to be the worst period of this semester. I grab my notebook and pen from my desk and head for the door.

"What class you have next Jumping Jelly Bean?" Damien asks as I walk off. I chose to ignore him and make myself blend into the sea of students exiting the classroom.

"Sis! Wait up for me. We can walk to P.E together." Silas yells out.

"Looks like I'll be seeing you there." Damien whispers in my ear. He flicks my hair and walks off.

"Just my luck." I grumble. Silas and I walk side by side toward the gym. I really can't stand gym. I'm not a runner, I'm not a track star, I can't make baskets, I can't score touchdowns, and I damn sure can't hit a ball with a bat. I hope just showing up for class is all I need to pass because if playing games and sports is required; I'll fail.

"P.E won't be so bad Em. Just participate and you'll pass." Silas suddenly says.

"Bub. P.E and I are polar opposites. I can't even run without tripping over my two left feet. I'll fail. Why even bother trying?" I comment back.

"How about we stay on teams together. I'll make sure you pass. Can't have the brains failing her first class." Silas says as he ruffles my hair.

"Silas!" I squeal out.

"Emmmmm!" Silas mocks. I place my hand over my heart like I've been wounded.

"You hurt me brother." I whine.

"Maybe Drama should be your career choice. You deserve an Oscar for that performance." Silas jokes. All I can do is drop my jaw to the floor and stare at my brother in shock.

That little shit head!

We make it to the gym right before the bell rings. I go to my assigned locker and pull out our gym uniform. I slip my yoga pants and T-shirt on. Once my clothing is situated; I put my white tennis shoes on. I'm the last girl out of the locker room. When I get to the area the rest of my class is standing. I notice my sister picked the shorts and tank top uniform. I don't think her shorts are appropriate; she must have rolled them ten times to get them that short. Half her ass is hanging out. I wish I had the confidence to walk out like that. Well not exactly like that.

"Alright class. We have two options: dodgeball or capture the flag." Our teacher announces. This has me doing the loudest groan of my life.

"Show of hands for dodgeball!" Several hands are in the air. I have yet raised mine.

"Show of hands for capture the flag?" Again, my hand stays down and several hands go up and it looks like capture the flag has won.

"We'll head outside by the woods. Two flags are already placed. We will divide into two teams once we get there." After walking for ten minutes behind the school; we reach the edge of the woods. It's where we have our obstacle courses at. And capture the flag is apparently going to take place in one of the four obstacles courses.

"Silas and Damien will be captains. Damien will pick first." He announces. I try to blend towards the back of the students. Praying he doesn't call my name.

"Emery."

Shit.

I walk up to the front and stand next to Damien. I glance over at my brother who mouths sorry; like what's he sorry for? He didn't get to pick first, Scary Pants McGhee did. How do I get off Damien's radar? Punch him on the other side of this face? Once the teams are situated, we all wait for our teacher's instructions on what to do next.

"Team A, Damien's team, your flag is up North. Team B, Silas's team, your flag is down South. First team to capture the others flag and make it back here with that flag wins. Good luck and try not to kill each other." Coach Quinn says.

"Are you going to tell us where our flags are? Or what?" Allie grumbles.

"No actually that is for you to figure out. It isn't hidden. It literally in plain sight. Either look up or down and you'll seem them." He answers with a wicked smile on his face.

"It would be easier for you to tell us." Angel who's Allie's best friend snaps.

"I mean I could tell you all where your flags are but the other team would hear which means it would be a lot easier for them to find it. How is that any fun?" He counters. He walks towards our group and whispers which is barely audible.

"Green flag tied around the fifth tree up North past the clearing." Oh he was going to tell us where our flags were; just not out loud. I watch as he whispers in my brother's ear. Once he gets back to the clearing that's in the middle of both teams; he claps his hands to get everyone's attention.

"You have five minutes to talk strategy with your teams. In five minutes we'll head to the clearing in the obstacle course to begin." There is ten players on each team. Currently I'm still wishing I was on Silas's team. Every time I turn look over; Damien is staring holes into the side of my head.

"Since it's an even number. I think we should split up into two groups of five. One group will guard our flag; while the other will try to capture our opponent's flag." Damien speaks up.

"That sounds fine with me." Lilly says. Most agree while I haven't said a peep.

"Lilly, Emery, Will, Matt, and I will attempt to capture their flags. The rest will guard our's." Damien announces.

"I would prefer to guard our flag." My soft voice echos out.

"I think you should be on the team capturing the flag." Matt says while rolling his eyes.

"I don't. I can't even run without tripping. I would be best at guarding." I retort.

"I don't see you getting physical with anyone." Will snorts out.

"Have you forgotten; she did give your best friend, my brother, a nice punch to his jaw earlier." Lilly snaps back. I forgot they were even siblings. They're the polar opposite; like Allie and I.

"Fine whatever. I'll help capture the damned flag. But if we fail l, it's on your heads. Not mine." I grumble.

"Okay teams. Let's walk to the clearing in the middle." Coach Quinn yells out. Damien walks diagonal to my left while Lilly is to my right. Literally right next to me. As soon as we make it to the clearing; coach blows his airhorn.

And all hell breaks loose.

I should have stolen Silas's football helmet!
