Chapter 2

Before he could process how to gather up wolf dogs or how he would like to murder me; I bolt the opposite direction. My heart is pounding so hard in my chest, I swear it's trying to escape. I mean that would be one way to die. Valley Groves Daily Times would say "Emery Brooks died from an escaped heart. Her heart grew legs and left her for dead." As I enter my classroom, I am the first one to make their appearance. I take the furthest seat from the rest of the desks. The one by the back window. In case something was to happen; I could jump out the window and run. Or my death. Seconds later the final bell rings and bodies of students begin to enter. Students take their seats but no one has dared to sit near me. I have desks open in front of me and two to the right of me. All the students are sitting with their clicks. You have the mean girls like my sister. The jocks are together while the outcasts are with each other. I, however, don't fit in any of those categories. Which is why I'm sitting by my lonesome. Our teacher has entered the room just as the late bell rings. Following behind her is Allie.

Just great, I can't go a semester without having my biggest tormentor in any of my classes.

"You're late Allie." Ms. Fritz grumbles. Allie ignores her and takes her seat with her mean girl friends. Right when she's about to do roll call; the door bursts open and walks in..... The guy I just sucker punched.

Ground swallow me whole please.

I hold my breath and I honestly have no idea why. Like holding my breath will make me go invisible or something. I try to shrink down to nonexistent size and glance at my hands on my desk. Maybe just maybe if I don't move; he won't noticed the girl who just jacked his jaw. The room gets silent as his boots hits the floor. The sound of his footsteps are getting louder and closer. Before I could close my eyes; his black combat boots are directly beside my desk.

Oh freaking hell.

The chair beside me scraps against the floor; the sound causing me to flinch. I honestly hate that sound. It's like nails on a chalkboard. Nails on a chalkboard makes my skin crawl. My shift my eyes off my hands on the desk and take a quick glance to my right. My eyes become the size of his combat boots. There on his cheek is a perfect pump knot. You can see my ring indentation as well as my knuckles on his jaw. I advert my eyes back to my hands before he can notice that I'm rudely staring at him.

"You know you hit pretty hard for such a small person." His voice is raspy like he hasn't talked in ages. I don't peep a word; as I continue to try to be invisible my mind is replaying his accent.

"No words from the girl whom threw a massive left hook to my face?" His voice is deeper now. I guess his last sentence helped out his voice cords. Again, I stay still and pretend I'm just a wall.

"What's your name?" He asks. Again, I'm quiet as a mouse. I don't even think you could hear my breathing. My heart beat, that's a different story. If it doesn't stop beating so quick; it will beat right out my throat.

"Fine don't tell me your name. I'll just give you a nickname and you'll be stuck with it." He says in a whisper. Silence that's all he gets from me.

"Assassination. Left hook murderer. Doll face killer. Lefty. The list can go on and on." He mumbles out. In horror I glance over at him. He's sitting at his desk with a smirk on his face.

"That seems to have gotten your attention." He laughs out. I open my mouth to actually speak. When the teacher cuts me off.

"Emery and Damien pay attention to the subject being taught." She snaps.

"Emery...." He whispers my name out loud. My name rolling off his tongue.

"That won't do. Jumping Jelly Bean is what I'll call you." He jokes.

"Negative." I whisper back.

"We'll see about that." Is all he says before he takes his eyes off me and back towards the teacher. Glancing back up front toward the teacher; I see she's writing on the board. Once she moves out the way. We can see plain as day English 4 Advance Placement on the board. How can I forget this is my first class. Don't get me wrong I love English. I love books. However, I don't see how he's in AP English. I doubt he even wants to go to college. Why is he placed here, of all classes?

Don't judge a book by its cover Em. You know this.

I roll my eyes at my subconscious. I should know not to judge anyone but come on! It's Damien Black we're talking about here. The guy who doesn't go to any classes; like last year I had all classes with him and he didn't show up but a handful of times. How did he even pass his classes to even get into Senior AP classes? I let out a groan and bang my head against the desk. This is going to be a rough semester or better yet school year. Had I known it was Damien Black who pulled my hair, I would have jumped into my locker instead of decking him.

"That's going to leave a mark Jumping Jelly Bean." He whispers. I turn my head to the side to stare down this annoying specimen called a human.... Named Damien.

Why of all days did I muster up the courage to punch someone today.

Ground swallow me up before he eat me.
