Chapter Three: Semper Fidelis. Si Je Puis.

Kitty

I spot Alexander, and wave my hands in the air. Thank goodness I was surrounded by my friends, who all understand me. I'd be the laughing stock of them if they saw. Alexander grins as he looks somewhere near me - very close - looking for a seat? I look around, but no seats are left. Only Eliza was that close to me though - no, he wouldn't be grinning at her. She's a beauty, but they hardly talked.

"Scooch over, guys! Alexander is gonna sit here!" I order. Everyone grumbles as they scoot over, landing Alex a perfect spot next to me and Eliza, the only people he knows here. Recently the table's been full, especially since John L. (courtesy of Peggy, his best friend, my cousin) and John C, (courtesy of Angelica, his girlfriend, also my cousin).

"Hey, Eliza and Kitty." Alexander's voice is so great, it ignites a fire in me. Eliza turns a bit pink when he sits right next to her, I feel so bad, oh no.

"Eliza, I'm sorry I placed you next to someone you're new to. Alex can move near John, they're friends, right?" I ask. Eliza now turns red. I hate it when I make it uncomfortable. I hate myself. No, Kitty, you know what the therapist told you. Be positive, Kitty. Shhh...positive.

"I'm sorry." I look down.

"Kitty, it's alright!" Eliza smiles. Alexander gives me a thumbs up.

"I'm so lucky to have you guys..." I smile weakly.

"Lunchtime poll!" And there's someone to ruin the mood. I look up to see Maria Lewis, in a dark red dress that barely reaches mid-thigh.

"So you win the lottery for 5 million dollars, but the same day aliens come down and say that they're going to blow up the Earth in two days. What do you do?" Maria asks. She plays with her hair as her eyes pass over everyone at the table.

"What the fuck kind of question is that?" Alexander says. Eliza goes red.

"Gosh, language, Alexander!" I screech.

"Hmph." He rolls his eyes and smiles. Oh god, his smile is so intoxicating.

"Well, I would try to arrange a nice tea party with all my friends." Eliza pipes up. Maria grins.

"Aw, soo nicee. I'm sure Mommy and Daddy will be there too, Lizzy?" Maria asks, the sarcasm nearly dripping off her words.

"Well, send Pegs my love. Of course, Lexi, I don't mind you inviting yourself over some time." She winks over her shoulder as she walks away, sashaying is it called? My sister taught me all this slang before she went off to college.

"Oh Eliza

Eliza

"Kitty, don't leave me for some boy toy. Semper Fidelis." I joke as Kitty writes in her diary.

"Si Je Puis, Betsey." She grins, and turns a bit pink. The leaves rustle down, and one falls in her tea.

"Shoot!" Kitty cries as she picks the leaf out of the simmering substance.

"I guess it is fall now," She grumbles.

"I guess." I giggle. I look around, inhaling that perfect, last whiff (dont know how to spell srry) of fresh summer air. With the tree as our umbrella, and the grass as our carpet, I think of the many memories I have in this backyard.

"So about that Alexander guy..." I say. I give Kitty a wink as she smooths out her skirt. She looks up and gives a look that is part embarrassed, part happy, part grumpy at me for even bringing him up.

"Well, I don't know. I have a habit of falling for terrible people. I mean, he seems nice, but the cursing over that poll, and he hardly ever talks to me..." Kitty trails off and plays with a piece of grass. A twinge of sadness crosses her face.

"I think between therapy, cheer, and the drama club, I can't manage a boyfriend. I would be fine if you took to him." Kitty mumbles. She looks over at me and smiles.

"I can barely manage my cat, why add another pet?" Kitty laughs. She continues play with her piece of grass.

"So, girls, how was your first day of high school?" Angelica asks, as she closes the sliding glass door. She smiles as she plops in between Kitty and I.

"So?" She asks, a sly grin on her face.

"Well, Kitty's totally obsessed with -" Kitty passes me a pleading look "- that cheer team, you know, she loves cheer." I say. I smile at Angelica.

"Oh, I thought you were going to say something about a boy. But I mean, the masquerade is coming up. Maybe you'll meet someone there!" Angelica says excitedly. As she explains all the rules and regulations, something sticks out.

"So each person knows the identities of only two people there, chosen randomly of course." Angelica exclaims. I know she loves the masquerade, as it's where she met her John.

I know I should be normal about this. But I'm just ecstatic.
