"Miss Livingston, please come up." the teacher calls. I know it's my turn. the teacher shakes the hat, and some names fall out. I swallow my fear as I stand up and start walking.

"Yes, Mrs Van Rensselaer." I say. I know only freshman and sophomores are in the hat, and as my cousin told me, but I still am extremely nervous over the two people I will pick. My hand dips in and picks up one name, folded up very well.

Alexander Hamilton.

Oh dear, now I know I have to keep his secret. Easy. I dip my hand in once more.

Elizabeth Schuyler.

Well shit.

Eliza

Patterns, I love patterns. As I stitch up my dress, my mind drifts off to the two people whose secret I must carry: Kitty Livingston and Maria Lewis. Two girls, both on opposite ends of the spectrum for my view on them. I know I'm very lucky to have gotten Kitty, though.

And Maria really isn't as bad as she seems. Apparently Kitty got into a conversation with her, and she told me all about her. Kitty just has that intoxicating feeling when you talk to her, her words flow like honey, and, if she really wants to, she gets information. She does not lack tact.

But still, she's extremely loyal. She never ever gossips, and I think she has one of the best moral compasses I've seen.

Ouch, what was that stinging? Oh, I pricked my finger. Ah well, at least I'm not bleeding. I continue my stitching, thoughts swirling in my head.

"Eliza...." my sister moans. I whip my head around.

"Angelica! You mustn't see my dress!" I say. I pout my lips and she rolls her eyes.

"Can we talk while I make my dress? I'm terribly bored." She says, as she plops down next to me on my bed. Her brown eyes twinkle as I scowl.

"Maybe if you stopped looking at my dress I could consider it." I say, as I begin to stitch my dress again.

"Please." Angelica pleads. I sigh, and rise up from my bed.

I grab my backpack and head to the library, and veer off to one of the side rooms.

I meet up with Kitty and walk into the cramped space.

"Hello, I'm Elizabeth, what's your name?" I say, holding back giggles. Kitty nearly laughs too.

"Catherine, I believe I'm in nearly all your classes," Kitty replies. I smile and sit down.

"So, you're my secret keeper, huh?" I grin. Kitty keeps on clicking her pen.

"Yup. So odd, since we don't know each other." She says in whisper. Kitty and I begin to laugh so hard the library appears at the entrance to the room.

"Shhh!" She says, as she walks past the door.

"So here are my designs for my dress. It's in a French style from 1780." I say. Kitty's eyes light up.

"Wow, Betsey, this is amazing!" Kitty squealed.

I know that the masquerade will be amazing.

This chapter is a bit short (well, it's 520ish words at the time of writing) but I promise you the next chapter will be very long and very exciting.
