Chapter 6: Fighting is Never Good

Caution! Swearing.

Kitty

I'm so excited, Alexander will see me! The best side of me! I nearly sprint to the entrance of the ballroom.

Maybe we'll kiss.

Maybe we'll go on a date.

Maybe we'll get married.

Kitty, get yourself together!

I see Alexander, his dark blue eyes sparkling in the lights. His red hair moves so distinctly as he and his dance partner go around in circles.

Wait, what? I blink, just to make sure. As they turn, their lips interlock - and I see now, why Maria didn't want me to go back.

She didn't want me to see them, Alexander and Betsey. Oh god, that fucking bitch. I've done so much for her.

I feel like throwing up. I know I've been staring for too long. Has he even seen me yet? I don't know. I don't know I can trust now.

Actually, I do. I start to sprint towards the entrance again, my body trying its best to now hide. Only a few seconds ago I would've wanted the world's attention on me.

My vision blurs as the floor comes closer.

I have her blocked on all my social medias. It's been about a week. I know I'm overreacting, but I don't want to say I'm wrong.

Maria's been helping me. I know I shouldn't be befriending the enemy, but right now, who cares. Really.

"Cat, are you in there?" Maria calls. I whip my head around. I guess I have been in this stall too long.

"Yep!" I say. I open the door. Maria seems worried. Like, genuinely.

"Cat, I need to talk to you about something." Maria says. I smile. Our talks recently have been the best thing in my life.

"Well, what is it?" I respond, eager to learn what this new idea is, or how it's not okay for friends to kiss friends' crushes.

"I can't come to your birthday party." Maria wraps her arms around me. I just sigh.

"I understand. Stuff." I say, looking over my shoulder at her. She looks really guilty.

"It's not stuff, my auditions. For that musical, remember?" Maria says, smiling weakly.

I turn around to face her, her brown eyes full of sadness.

"It's okay." I say. I boop her on the nose.

"Besides, then it'll just be me. No one else is gonna come. It's not even on my real birthday." I shrug. Maria just looks around nervously. I smile at her.

"I have a plan...for something. I'll talk to you about it on your birthday." Maria grins. She's a bit too close, and I feel my face flushing.

Maria grabs a quick glance at her watch.

"Oh - the bell's about to ring - my class is on the other side of the school! Gotta hurry!" Maria says. Her curly hair moves around as she gathers up her things and runs out the door.

"Bye!" she says, smiling. I begin to wonder why everyone hates her so much.
