I love Memory Diving
I found the hospital easily enough, the seriousness of the situation strained out all other information flooding into my brain, it was just Bundi's wounds and how I would be treating them. I was alone, and quickly prepared a table and sifted through crude medical equipment with shaking hands. I needed to sew up the wound but I couldn't if I didn't calm down.
"Tell me what you're doing," Peri beckoned, springing into action.
"I'm putting pressure on the wounds to stop the bleeding, then I' going to give them stitches and close it with my powers," I explained, taking a deep breath.
"Good, keep going."
"I saw my mom do this once, when one of the hunters fell of a cliff and had a nasty cut down their back," my hands stopped shaking so badly and I removed the cloth I had been pressing down on the wound, then got to work threading the needle. "Felix and I were the only kids in the village who weren't squeamish to blood, so she let us watch."
Peri chuckled, probably viewing the memory through me. "Yeah?"
"I remember how she talked us through the process, much to the annoyance of the hunter. Then she blessed some leaves and made them into a poultice and it healed remarkably fast. I remember learning a lot that day." I started placing the stitches. "She was always good with helping people, and I thought it was funny when Maude brought her all the equipment in her mouth."
I took a few deep breaths and tied a knot in the thread and cut it carefully between my teeth. Then I placed my hands gently around Bundi's wrist and traced the fresh injury with the tips of my fingers, their eyelids twitched gently. I sucked in a breath, feeling the oxygen flow through me like a swarm if bees covering my body from my head to my toes. Then I let the energy flow into my fingers. My eyes rolled back into my head, and I slipped into Bundi's subconscious.
It was chaos, dark, probably night time, and the smell of smoke burnt my lungs and the inside of my running nostrils. Someone was screaming words I couldn't make out and gripping my hair, shoving my face into the fire, it stung badly and I shrill cry for help escaped my lips as I squirmed desperately to avoid being burnt. My heart was beating so fast and I wanted out of here, I wanted out this horrible place.
I was roughly shoved backwards, and blinked my eyes rapidly to dispel the vision. Bundi was sitting up and breathing heavily, their eyes flicking around the room like a trapped animal. There was a white streak in their dark hair. I pushed my hands against my aching forehead and noticed Nole and Jason were here, I wondered how long I had been stuck in Bundi's memories.
Nole stood up instantly and hugged Bundi tightly, letting them know it was okay, and they eventually stopped gasping for air. I pushed myself back up to a sitting position, and spotted Moriah wobbling around on the ground, the poor mara was still woozy. I picked him up and handed him to Bundi, who glanced up, eyes still full of confusion.
"How are you feeling?" I asked weakly, still feeling dizzy myself.
"More importantly, what happened to you?" Nole demanded, his voice full of concern, as soft as heather.
"What did you do to me?" Bundi croaked, their gaze locking on mine, they didn't look happy.
I shifted uncomfortably, "what do you mean? I... I used my powers to heal you."
They looked down at the cut on their forearm, which had closed up a little due to my efforts. Nole stroked their ragged hair away from their face, brushing his fingers through the white streak.
"Sorry..." they apologized slowly. "I'm... I don't remember anything except... there was a woman?"
Jason, who had been watching quietly by the side looked up and I caught his stare.
"was she wearing lots of purple? Maybe had a snake?" He asked.
Bundi frowned, "I don't... I don't remember."
"That's okay," I assured, reaching for some gauze and wrapping up their arm. "Don't take this off for a few days then I'll take the stitches out."
"Thank you... I'm glad you found me," Bundi breathed a sigh of relief. "Ow."
"I can maybe try and heal it a little more, it might hurt less," I offered.
"No!" Bundi snapped. "No... no... sorry no thank you. It uh, wasn't the nicest feeling."
"Oh." My chest felt tight and all of a sudden, I was very uncomfortable.
What could that have possibly meant? I wasn't aware that it felt... bad. This whole time had it been causing people discomfort? This only reinforced my irrational fear that whatever this power was it was rooted in evil, no matter what anyone told me. This cast a dark shade on the ability, reminding me more and more of Apophis, with her sly green smirks and red lipped smiles.
"Hey Craig?"
I look up and see Jason staring at me, "y-yeah?"
"Can I talk to you outside?" His face is expressionless, like an eagle sitting atop a crag in the rock, scanning the ground for the movements of small animals.
I swallowed and followed him outside.
