Bring Up Bad Memories
Craig wasn't scary, but he tended to go into a trance when he healed people and that always freaked Jason out. Just a little bit.
Craig's eyes were closed and he was bent over Bundi's still form, one hand laid gently across their forehead the other touching the dark purple scar on Bundi's forearm. Craig didn't move, but every once in a while, Bundi's eyes would twitch under their eyelids. It was unsettling, but Jason didn't get up, more times then not, he passed out after he... woke up from the trance. Somebody had to be here to make sure he didn't hurt himself.
The tent fabric was pushed aside and Persephone ducked her head as she walked inside. Jason and Nole looked up at her as she stood there, pressed into the corner. She cleared her throat, and brushed hand through her tangled hair.
"How are they doing?" She asked, with her hands folded against her waist.
Nole didn't answer, a reply born from anger fear, and probably more salt then he would admit.
"Hopefully fine, thank to Craig," Jason supplied, not bothering to look at her.
Persephone stared at the young teen, her tense features fading slightly, "he's healing them?"
"Yes."
"Hm." She crossed her legs and sat down.
Like the hum of a bee's wing, the silence settled down between the three of them heavy with premeditation. The only sound was Peri nervously picking through his feathers, his eyes giving off a faint green glow in the dim light of the enclosed space. Jason could feel Lafayette's eyes settle on Persephone as he stared at her like... well, a falcon.
Jason felt something well up in him, some sort of emotion. His fingers curled into palms like a dying spider's legs, and he could smell smoke. He glanced down, and found the tiniest of fires laying in the middle of his hand, it frightened him, because he hadn't meant to summon it.
"It's okay," Lafayette assured him, "it'll probably be on and off for a bit, you haven't tapped into it for a really long time."
Jason nodded, shaking his hand out to extinguish the flame. Persephone noticed this and her lips pulled back ever so slightly.
"You don't have to do that in here."
Jason bit his lip, "you don't have to be in here."
Persephone let out a cold breath, and Nole watched this all with growing interest. He leaned back in his chair and let one of his hands relax, suspended in the air. He breathed onto his knuckles and they lit up one by one. The other two glanced over at him. Nole grinned at Jason, and extended his hand.
"Check this out." Nole clenched his fist tighter and the flame shrunk and turned from orange to a pale cream color.
Jason's eyes flew open with child-like wonder and a shy smile spread across his face. Nole flattened his fingers and the flames snapped into a dark red color and spread across his fingers like webbing. Jason couldn't help but let out a small laugh, Persephone didn't think it was very amusing. The increasingly familiar uncomfortable look had returned her face as she watched the boy's exchange with narrow pupils and clenched hands.
"Are you going to apologize?" Nole asked her.
She frowned, caught off guard, "for what?"
"For being rude, here you're not allowed to tell someone to stop burning unless it's a danger to the environment and other people."
"It's arson," Persephone sighed, "you derive pleasure from burning things. Don't tell me this isn't a dangerous place to play with fire. This is a hospital, a place of life, you should not be tampering with death on this sacred ground."
"Fire is not death," Nole looked her in the eyes, "it's allowing nature to breathe."
Persephone remained silent. Jason stared at Nole in awe, he'd actually managed to get to be quiet for once. He grinned and held his hands to his chest. Nole winked at him.
"Do you know how long he's been able to do that?" Persephone cut in, purposefully avoiding looking at either of them by directing her eyes on Craig.
"It probably started as soon as he summoned a familiar. They connect us to the earth in a much stronger way then you can imagine, Persephone. There's a difference between being able to tap into Kosmos's magic and having it run through your veins."
"Don't think I don't understand," Persephone said coldly, "I have been tethered to Zoi ever since my coronation."
"Oh sure, that's the same thing."
Persephone's nostrils flared, and she might have been about to do something if Jason had not called out at that moment.
"Guys, stop." He stood up and walked over to Craig, who's mouth had opened and small whimpering noises were coming out of his mouth.
There was a continuous stream of tears flowing down Craig's face as he twitched slightly. Jason didn't want to touch him, e didn't know what might happen, but he reluctantly laid his hand on Craig's shoulders, trying to calm him. Thankfully nothing magical happened, but Craig wasn't snapping out of it. He let out a sob, and Jason shook him slightly.
"Craig... Craig!" he tried, as the whimpering continued.
Craig let out a chocked gasp and ripped his hands away from Bundi's skin, the faint green light leaving his pals as he fell back against Jason's chest, as the taller boy had predicted. Jason watched Craig's eyes roll back into his head as he fainted, and let out a small huff. Classic damsel-in-distress Craig.
"Is he okay?" Persephone asked.
"He's fine, just exhausted," Jason explained, wrapping arms around Craig's legs and hoisting him up, "I'm going to take him back to our tent and let him sleep."
Craig's head lolled against Jason's chest as he transported the broccoli haired gremlin back to bed. His mouth was slightly open, and he was drooling. Despite the grossness Jason thought it was... well he thought it was something.
There was never a dull moment around him, for sure.
