Chapter íkosi
It was Thursday night. Lypsie Lee was beyond furious. Their plan was so simple, yet Odetta Johston still screwed it up. She suddenly felt karma tailing her when Adam Lee always said, "Work solo, Calypso." Lypsie should have listened to her father earlier.
They were sitting on the sofa. "You didn't even hide the body?"
Odetta sighed, looking stressed out. "I-I didn't know what to do."
"How do we explain that to the cops?" Lypsie demanded, snarling. "We can blame Penny for the poisoning of sacred datura, but Tellie's brutally beaten body? What, did a bear from the mainland tear her apart? And that joke you said, it's so dumb!"
"I was just psyched out, okay?"
Lypsie hated her excuses, it gave Odetta more control. She crossed her arms. "It's all your fault, Oddie. This could have worked perfectly into place, but you screwed up! What's worse is that Alexis was the one who found the corpse. She's going to suspect something."
"I think she already does," Odetta mumbled.
"Don't play coy with me." Lypsie grabbed Odetta's chin, her eyes narrowing. "Because this doesn't line up with our suicide story, we'll have to run. Once Lukas comes back with the Midén, we'll steal the boat."
"And what?" Odetta groaned, exhausted. "If we're even considering running away from the cops, it'll look so fishy. And we'll just steal and boat and sail the way back to Canada? Plus, we can't leave Lukas or Alexis stuck on Omfori."
"Oh, so now you have compassion?" Lypsie sneered, letting go of Odetta's chin. "And, well...we also have to get rid of Alexis. She knows too much, just like Tellie! We have to kill her, and I'll gladly do it."
Odetta seemed terrified. "Seriously? You're willing to kill someone el-else?!"
"Alexis also started all of this," Lypsie rolled her eyes. Why did she love someone so weak and stupid? Odetta may seem brave and tough, but the girl could crumble easily. "If only she didn't make a scene on the Midén."
Odetta sank into the sofa, sighing. "But—"
"This is all your fault," the East Asian girl reminded Odetta, touching her cheek softly. She always knew that Odetta's affection for her was Lypsie's greatest weapon. It made her more feeble. "If you didn't betray me, if you didn't hurt me..."
"I'm sorry," she whimpered.
"So am I."
Lypsie Lee looked out the window. The Cage Pool was wrecked to shreds, fake bones floating on the water's surface. Alexis was dead, hopefully. Odetta dropped the gun, gasping. "Did I-I just shoot her?"
They both were startled by the roar of a motor. A boat's motor, AKA the Midén.
"Crap, it's Lukas!" Odetta cried out, panicking. Useless girl.
"Why the hell is he a day early?! We got to go, Oddie!" Lypsie yelled angrily. She dropped the kitchen knife, grabbed the mini statue of a temple and curiously writing girl. One last prize before this was all over.
"This is insane!" Odetta argued, but she didn't protest. They raced down the hall, scrambling down the stairs, going to the foyer. In the distance, they saw Lukas hollering. "We can hide in the church!"
Lypsie growled. "No, we need to steal the boat—"
"It's over, Calypso!" Odetta snapped, massaging her temples. "It's over, we're going to jail for the rest of our lives! We're both bad girls, we're both villains! Stop trying to convince us that we're not, that we're victims!"
"You said you hated how Penelope used the term 'We're all broken' and her act," Lypsie hissed back. "Well, guess what, Odetta? We can be our own version of broken or fixed. This island, Omfori, is called Ogygia. It's the island of Calypso the goddess."
"Lypsie, shut up!"
"This is the island of a broken girl!" Lypsie screamed, feeling exposed. She felt vulnerable, a kind of pain burned in her lungs as she continued. "That broken girl is me! I'm hurt and you're being selfish! I'm that broken girl—"
"I'm done with your bullshit!" Odetta screeched as sirens rang around Omfori. It was the Greek police, Lukas must have called them after they heard Odetta's gun go off. "I don't love you, Lypsie!"
That wounded her. "You're lying. I know you're lying—"
"This isn't a Greek myth you can change into your own love story, Lypsie! You're toxic and manipulative!" Odetta said, crossing her arms across her chest. Lypsie was left speechless. "You're just like Penelope."
