Chapter dódeka

Alexis kept the copy of the Odyssey and Penny's diary tucked away in her carry-on. She went downstairs where she saw Odetta and Lypsie sitting on the sofa. She spotted a smidge of pink lipstick on Odetta's cheek, which looked like Lypsie's. It was fishy, but she didn't say anything.

"Where's Tellie?" Alexis frowned. "She can't be on a run that long."

Lypsie quickly shot Odetta an embarrassed look. "Uhm..."

"I don't care what you two were up to before," Alexis rolled her eyes. "But I'm worried about her."

"Right, you're worried." Odetta's voice was deep of suspicion. Alexis suddenly realized how fishy she looked right now. She was probably one of the last people to speak to Tellie (and the fact that they were kind of arguing).

"I am," Alexis insisted, feeling snappish. "Seriously, where is she?"

The two shrugged as Alexis growled in frustration.

"I'm going out to find her," she said, heading to the foyer. She slipped on her shoes, tying up her laces. Lypsie and Odetta followed.

"Are you sure that's a good idea?" Lypsie asked, frowning.

Alexis rolled her eyes again. "Why not?"

"The sun is setting."

"It's not even dinner yet."

Lypsie grabbed a pair of sandals, strapping it on. "You're not going alone."

Odetta sighed, as if she was forced to go.

The three girls went out to find Tellie, calling her name as if she was a lost cat. Alexis' feet crunched under some twigs as they neared close to the beach with the church again. The church's blue door stood out against the setting sun.

"Teeeellie," Odetta shouted in a drawn out voice.

"I'm getting concerned," Lypsie said, looking stressed out. Yeah, no kidding, Alexis thought. She feared that something incredibly horrible happened to her. What if something that happened to Penny had also happened with Tellie? It would be too much guilt.

"When do you think Tellie left?" Lypsie asked innocently.

What happened if Tellie was made to leave by force? "I dunno, probably before any of us woke up. Who was the first to wake up?"

Lypsie raised her hand nimbly. Suspicious. "I couldn't sleep well."

"That doesn't mean anything," Odetta said, quick to defend Lypsie. It was obvious, they liked each other or they were really friendly. Too friendly. They passed by the church and Alexis' eyes lingered. Curiosity burned in her.

There was something in there, but what?

Finally, after a long hike around the border of Omfori, they went into the heart of the forest. Even the tour on Tuesday couldn't help the girls, they were utterly lost. Odetta knew some survival skills, and she joked that it would save their lives if an angry bear attacked them.

"Bears don't exist on the island," Lypsie pointed out.

Odetta sighed loudly. "I was poking fun at you guys, it's a joke."

"It would be more likely if a hurricane or typhoon came at us instead."

"Way to kill the vibe," Odetta grumbled. "Isn't that Alexis' job at being the kill-joy?"

"Shut up," Alexis said, trekking off the path. "We'll go this way, I think I see an open field out there."

"Wait for us," Lypsie advised. Alexis saw a foot sticking out.

It was a running shoe.

She walked ahead quickly, starting to run. The two other girls called after her to stop, but Alexis didn't care. Suddenly, she wished she did. Alexis stopped dead, her eyes widening. Her feet dug into the face of the Earth, the bloody grass.

She didn't even know what she was looking at.

It was Tellie's dead body. It didn't look like Tellie Hollows or a body at all. She was so pale, as if the blood was drained from her skin like Black Dahlia. Her body was angled at places it shouldn't be. Her neck...it looked like it was snapped, or twisted.

She was so beaten and bruised, it was almost paranormal. Alexis backed away, screaming. She screamed so loud, so loud that it could rival all of the Scream films. Alexis grasped for air, getting snips and flashes of her face. Jeanie Mak's face.

She shut her eyes, sloppy tears drawing her. There, Alexis thought. I said her name, now let me be free. Alexis cried so long until the two other girls caught up. Lypsie shrieked, gasping.

"Is th-that Tellie?" she asked weakly, horrified. "God, she looks as if she was mauled by a bear..."

"Her body is so...so..." Odetta didn't finish her sentence.

"She's dead!" Alexis sobbed obviously. "This is all wrong, th-this isn't supposed to happen. We w-were supposed to have a fun vacation to a exotic Greek island, and not have both of our friends die!"

Alexis turned away, crying. Everything was falling apart. She was falling apart.

"What h-happened to her?" Odetta inquired, tears forming. "Jesus Christ..."

"Something or someone took Tellie away f-from the House of Riches," Alexis sniffled, drawing a shaky breath. Deep breaths, she reminded herself. "She didn't go for a run, she's not stupid."

The three friends stood silently. Odetta had the guts to inspect Tellie's corpse, but even she couldn't bring herself to stay so close for a long time. Lypsie was trying to comfort Alexis, but she didn't want helpful words.

No, right now, all she wanted was to hide away. She didn't feel safe, she didn't feel safe with her friends. Alexis debated if they were still friends after everything, two of their friends had died.

Penelope Goode and Tellie Hollows. The next could be Alexis Kathan. Was she on the list of people to die? Did fate or destiny just decide to be an asshole today to Alexis?

She wanted to yell at the universe for being such a pain, she wanted to push away Lypsie, she wanted to run away. Suddenly, before the logical part of Alexis could protest, she walked away from the scene of crime.

Lypsie and Odetta followed shortly, leaving behind Tellie's corpse. Alexis thought again of how

They stayed silent once again, either crying or in utter shock. But Alexis knew what they were all thinking—one of them was a murderer. There was no way in hell that Tellie ended up like that on her own.

You don't just end up beaten up or bruised to death. You don't just end up with all your limbs twisted in the wrong way. You don't just end up with a terrified expression plastered on your face. You don't just end up having your neck snapped like a broom.

No, someone killed Tellie Hollows. And it was one of the two. But Alexis had to decide quickly before she would be the next one to be brutally murdered. But that was the hard part:

Odetta Johnston or Lypsie Lee?
