STORY
A husband & wife still relatively young & just married decided they wanted to live happily & freely in their old age. So the husband went off to find some work in order to cater for this prospect. But before he went, he made a covenant & condition with his wife saying,
“U are to remain faithful to me & I shall remain faithful to u”.
Saying this he went off looking for a job until he passed a farm where he found some work. The farm owner decided to hire the husband.
Before the husband started work he made a covenant & trust with the farm owners asking for two conditions .
The first one was;
“U are to remain honest with me & I shall remain honest with u.”
Aиϑ a second request saying that whatever I work from now till my old age, I want to be paid fully right at the end in one large sum so I can take it home & live happily with my wife in old age.
So the husband worked honestly for 20 years till he turned 50, at which point he requested the sum of 20 years work to return back home.
The farm owner was disappointed seeing such an honest worker go, but he remained true to his trust & offered the full sum of money to the husband. However he told the husband “ U can either take ur money OR u can take some advice that I will give, one of the two but not both”.
Perplexed, the husband prayed & asked for guidance in this matter until he decided that money will end & can get lost. He thus decided to take the advice from the farm owner.
The farm owner gave him the following advices:
1) There are no shortcuts in life.
2) Do not indulge urself in other people’s problems.
3) Do not make decisions when u are angry & promises when u’re happy.
So the husband took the advices & set off.
On the way out, the farm owner gave the man 3 loaves of bread. One to eat with his wife when he gets home. The second after a certain amount of time & the third much later.
Taking the bread the man set off for home. Finally after 20 years he was returning to his beloved wife.
On the way, he asked for directions to his hometown at which people informed him of a shortcut. At first the man decided to take the shortcut until he remembered the first advice:
‘There are no shortcuts in life’. Immediately he turned around & took the long way home. After a while he was informed that on the ‘shortcut’ there were cannibals waiting for someone to come through. At this, the man praised Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala & showed gratitude & carried on.
He travelled onward the entire day. As night fell he decided to stop at a hotel for the night. During his sleep he heard screams from outside at which he opened the window. However he quickly remembered the second advice:
‘Do not indulge urself in other people’s problems’.
He quickly closed the windows & went to sleep.
The next morning as he prepared to leave, he was informed by the hotel owner that the screams were a trap to lure innocent travellers outside to loot & murder them. At this the man praised Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala & showed gratitude as he set off.
Finally he reached his town & found his house. However as he approached, he saw his wife with a young man .He became enraged. But he then remembered the third advice which was:
‘Do not make decisions when angry’
He turned around & slept outside for the night.
In the morning, his anger had left him. He went into his home & discovered that the young man was his own son. When he had left his wife 20 years ago, unknown to them both , she had been pregnant. At this he thanked Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala & wept in gratitude.
The family then sat down to partake of a meal. The husband took out the loaf of bread & cut it, just to find gold coins hidden by the farm owner inside.
Not only had the advice of his elders saved him but he had also gotten even more wealth than he had worked for.
A story for us to take valuable lessons from .
Always adhere to the wisdom & advice of our learned elders. Advices that the elderly can give are much deeper than one may think, & is a result of many rises & falls in their life. They have a wealth of experience. If we take the time to listen & put their advices into practise, we might just get saved from making the costly mistakes they did & achieve greater things sooner..
