What If ?

She was a blond haired beauty queen

He felt she was out of his league

And from afar

He would watch her with the others

Stare, close his eyes and dare to dream

And just how he thought it would be

She married the star of the football team

And two years later he had a wife of his own

But she stayed in his dreams

And he wondered

What if ?

A few years later he saw her again

She was with one of his friends

She smiled at him

They talked for a while

But he knew how it would end

She said,” I have a great life”

He told her he loved his wife

Then he went home to his empty apartment

Sadness cut through him like a knife

And he wondered

What if ?

If only he had the courage just to ask her

The things that were always on his mind

If only things had went the way he dreamed

But then life can be so unkind

And as we go through life, we find

We can’t live

What if ?

He sat alone at the bar

In 40 years he’d come this far

And as he raised a glass to his birthday

He gazed outside at the stars

He saw her walk into his dream

Still a blonde haired beauty queen

She pulled up a chair

And sat there beside him

Said things aren’t always as they seem

I can’t live

What if ?

If only it was you there by my side

Through all the pain that I felt

If only I had seen who you were inside

But we play the hands we are dealt

But there were things that I felt

We can’t live

And as time passes us by

As we see the tears we cry

I think we realize

We cant live
