Talk To Me
"So you're just leaving?" Adam questioned, sincerely saddened by the sudden change of choice. He wanted his house back, he wanted his life back, he wanted his crib back! How was he supposed to go back to way things were if he wasn't even going to get help?
"Yeah Adam, cause this is not working out. Mkay? So goodbye. Saynonara. Don't text me in the middle of the night saying 'u up', because-" Beetlejuice began getting all choked up, as if he were about to cry. He looked Adam in the eye, hesitating before saying his next sentence.
"'New phone...who dis?' SEE YOU IN HELL! Yeah! I'm gone!" Beetlejuice threw a smoke bomb, but it barely covered one part of his body. It must've been a dud.
"I'm just gonna use the door." He grabbed the handle, slowly opening up the door. He looked back at the Maitlands.
"Hey guys?"
"Yeah?" Adam almost felt his heart burst. Maybe he wasn't going to leave, maybe he would actually change his mind and stay to help? It would be great!
"Fuck you guys." But sadly for Adam, that wasn't the case. Beetlejuice flipped off the two of them, and immediately left the room. Adam yelled at him before the door officially shut, he could barely speak. Adam then went to go sit beside his wife solemnly, this was effecting him more than he wanted it to. Barbara looked over and laid her hand on Adam's wrist, hoping to make him feel better.
"Hey, we'll get through this! We don't need that creepy pervert's help. We're the Maitlands! We can get through anything! Right?" She smiled at her husband, but he replied with a simple grunt. He didn't really believe they could do it without the scaring pro, even if Barbara did.
"Adam?" She sighed, "Ever since that demon showed up you've been acting really weird. Usually you'd try to make the best out of a situation like this? Anything going on?" Barbara questioned, moving her hand to his back as she gave him a small pat. Adam didn't even make eye contact with her, he didn't know if he wanted to talk about it.
"Well, uhm, it's a long story. You really wouldn't like it anyway, it's a lot to talk about." He mumbled, Barbara playfully rolled her eyes.
"Adam!" She laughed, "I'm your wife. I'm here for you. Talk to me." She gave him a warm smile, she really wanted to know what was up. Adam hesitated, looking around before opening his mouth to speak.
"Yes, you are my wife, but you weren't supposed to be."
"What?" Now she was even more confused, who knew death could be so confusing?
"I wasn't supposed to have a wife at all! But I was supposed to have a husband, and that creepy pervert was supposed to be it." He nervously spoke each word, not knowing how Barbara would react. She didn't know how to react either.
"Wait, what!? But he's so-...he's so!.."
"Disgusting? Unsanitary? Weird? Unlovable. It seemed that way, it's like we were fighting almost everyday! It was so frustrating!"
"I can't keep doing this if you never tell me anything!" Adam Maitland in the flesh, younger and way angrier.
"What's the big idea? I really don't see a problem here." Laurence, yes that's what he was called, replied with his usual carefree attitude.
"All you do is hide! Maybe you're just too scared to admit you have feelings?" Adam fought back, Laurence seemed offended.
"You take that back!"
"No. You're just a sad little baby boy on this inside! A sad little baby boy who won't let me help him!" Adam got closer, all he wanted to do was help. He couldn't do any of that if this kept happening.
"You don't fucking know me!"
"It was always so painful!"
"It's like every day your trying to break my heart...of course I know you! I've known you almost my whole life! Why is it so hard to open up to me?" Adam placed a hand over his heart, balling up his other fist in anger.
"Listen, you're just a white, middle classed, over positive, depressed wreck waiting to happen. Soon enough, you're going to be the one hiding you feelings. We won't last long, you're a hardworking citizen and I'm...well I'm me! Not exactly a good pair." Laurence explained, speaking more cold than he wanted to.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"You know exactly what it means."
"My happiness was slowly draining everyday."
"Why can't you just let me be here with you? I know we don't seem like a good fit, but what happened to that lesson don't judge a book by it's cover?" Adam tried to look on the bright side, trying to find a positive way out.
"This is adult life. Not fucking kindergarten, Adam."
"Yes! It is adult life! So why can't you act like one?"
"No one wants to act like an adult! People want to have some fun on their own sometimes." Laurence argued, trying not to get too aggressive.
"He wanted fun. I wanted a life. Yet for some reason I never tried to leave."
"NOT EVERYTHING IS FUCKING FUN!" Adam was going to lose it, he had never had an outburst like this before. He was breaking down. Laurence simply stared at him, not really sure what to do. He'd never seen anything like this before.
"I-I'm sorry I just- I want this to last, I'm not asking you to change yourself. Just be more mature? Atleast for me? Can we try to make this work?" Adam looked up at him, if you looked closely you could almost see the tears in his eyes.
"Okay."
"Things seemed to be okay after that, but then..then he.." Adam let out an awkward laugh, he wasn't sure if he wanted to even get into the next part. The next part was horrifying to him, he wasn't ready to talk about it. Barbara quickly cut in.
"Wow, didn't see that coming. But you don't have to keep talking about it if you don't want to. Let's just solve this problem for now and you can take all the time you want. Let's get our house back!" Barbara's smile returned, she was fully supportive of Adam. Adam returned the smile, he nodded and stood up.
"Let's do it!"
"That needy pervert was right! If we want our house back, we have to fight for it!" Barbara stood up as well, placing her hands on her hips.
"Well, how? No one can see us!"
"We're ghost, damn it! Let's...HAUNT THIS BITCH!" Barbara shouted, in a deep voice. Adam was taken back by her sudden change of tone.
"Barbara!" Adam gasped, looking her up and down.
"Oblivion calls! So we might as well walk through some walls. I'm sure we can haunt our own halls! Cause Adam, we're ready as we'll ever get." Barbara announced, touching the walls around the room. Trying to place her hand through it, ghost stuff.
"If we want to win back our home, I got to get right outside my comfort zone!" Adam's confidence was brought back to him, he was ready!
"We’ll rattle chains and I don’t know, just wail and moan until they go! Are you willing to take the next step?" Barbara asked, giving her husband a determined stare.
"Yes!" Adam nodded, "Ready, set!"
"Ready, set!" Barbara ran towards her husband, locking hands with him.
"Ready, set, let's!" They said in unison before breaking off to make random scary ghost noises. They really believed they were scary.
They were going to get their god damn home back!
