CHAPTER TWENTY

Waking up, you couldn't recognize where you were. Remembering what had happen yesterday, you know this was Frank's bedroom.
Sitting up, wincing as your wounds still hurt. Walking slowly, you open the door and see Frank asleep on the couch, with his mask on.

You look down at him, with adoration in your eyes. Still not believing how kind and patient he is with you, you smile to yourself.
Poking him gently, he wakes up.
"Ah... Hey Y/N."
You could hear the grogginess in his voice, still covered with the robotic tune.
"Good morning, Frank.."
Smiling at him, you sat down beside him as he sits up.
"I had help with Collin, stitching you up.."
"Tell him I said thanks..."
Not sure what to do, you slowly rest your head on his shoulder. He stiffened up, but slowly relaxed, leaning more into your touch.
"My wound still hurts... And I need to change the bandages.."
Looking down, you needed to change the bloodied bandages.
Frank stood up, grabbing the medkit.
"I can change it for you, it's the least I can do..."
He said as you nodded. You lifted your shirt up, letting him unwrap the bandage around your waist.
Also unwrapping the bandage in your shoulder, he told you your shoulder is looking a lot better.
Wrapping only around your waist, he puts your shirt back down, sitting back down next to you.
"Thanks a lot Frank. You have no idea how many times you saved my ass..."
You chuckled as he shakes his head.
"I suppose I don't have a choice anymore. I'll take care of you forever."
You smile up at him,
"Is that a promise?"
"I promise."

Resting your head back on his shoulder, the two of you watched TV, waiting for the food to arrive.
Your heart beating quick as he wrapped his arm around your shoulder, bringing you in close to him.
"I'm going to see the house on Sunday. They're going to show me around, you should come."
You suggest, he nods in response.
"And I'm paying my debt next week..."
He froze, looking down at you.
"I guess my first promise will be fulfilled now?"
He asked in a teasing manner.
"Yeah, bunny.. But seriously, thanks for not breaking your promise and wait until you can show your face.."
He laughs, his head resting on top of yours.

Few days had passed ever since that day, and you finally had paid your debt.
"Y/N!! I'm so happy to see you!!"
She cried out, giving you a bone crushing hug.
"Y-Yeah..! I-I can't br-breathe Harleen..!"
You gasp out as she let's you go, giggling.
"Sorry, it's just been awhile! Here, before we do business, let's catch up! I'll treat you to lunch!"
She grabs you by the arm, leading you to a fancy restaurant.

She paid for you as she talked through out the meal, telling you her experience in Romania and her business there. You weren't that interested but listened to her story, she always was a Bubbly, happy woman.
"Well, thanks so much for coming with me Y/N. Now, let's talk business, shall we?"
Her eyes change, turning more serious.
You nod, opening up your bag. Taking out the envelope.
"Here, exact amount. No more, no less."
She smiles, putting it into her purse.
"Thanks so much Y/N. You kept your part of the oath... Which is rare."
You raise your eyebrow.
"Well, I don't exactly wanna die yet, Harleen.. Now that it's over, I'm gonna go."
She waves you goodbye as you get on your motorcycle.
The same time she gets inside her limousine.
I can quit now. Just need to call boss...

Entering your apartment, you dialed his number.

"State your name and business."

"It's me, Y/N."

"Ah... Good to hear from you."

"I did it. I paid my debt. I can leave now."

As you were about to hang up, you could hear him speak.

"I have some... Bad news."

Putting your phone back to your ear,

"Well, you're able to leave. But not right now. You need to do... A task.

"Bullshit. I thought you'd help me?!"

"This is the best I could do. It's just a task, Y/N. It's simple... For you, anyways."

"You're full of it, Conrad."

"... I'm gonna ignore you just said my name, Y/N. You know how I feel about my dear hunters saying my name."

"Im sorry, just-- Just tell me what it is."

"Y/N, this task is... Very, very complicated. The bodies you will bury will be what a new system will become."

You gasped at the thought of a new system.

"All you need to do... Is take out The Muertos."

"The-- What? I haven't heard of them before?"

"They used to be apart of the system, but they've gone rogues."

"I can't say why, but the higher ups demanded them gone. And they shoved that responsibility to you..."

"What the fuck, Conrad?! Why me? Isn't there anyone else?! So I'm just a scapegoat? Why can't the higher ups do it themselves?!"

He sighed,

"Look, I'm sorry Y/N! But that was the least I could do! There were much more worse tasks they could've chose, but this was the only one you could do..."

He went silent.

"Please, just do this task and I promise you. You can quit and I can offer you another job somewhere else... Somewhere safe."

"I'll hold you to it. Thanks, Conrad."

"Two weeks. Two weeks from now. That's when you'll do it."

Ending the phone call.

Feeling frustrated, you throw your phone against the wall.
"Fuck! Those assholes!"
You screamed, pacing around the room.
"And they expect me to do it all alone?! Take out a whole fucking organization!?"
What they said was true, no one really got out.

"They think I'd die still apart of the system?! Screw that, screw them!"

You hadn't realized you got too loud until your neighbor knocked on the wall, making you quiet.

Your heart felt too heavy, making it hurt physically. You needed fresh air, you needed to take your mind off this and think with a clear head.
Putting on your shoes and jacket, you went down outside.

Hugging yourself to keep warm, you walk around the city. Admiring the city lights at night, and inhaling the fresh, cold air.
"Ah... It's been a while since I've felt this peaceful..."
Without noticing, tears roll down your cheeks.
Letting it all out, you reminisced the happy and peaceful times you had with your friends.
.
.
.
.
"Y/N! Come with us this summer! It'll be fun, we'll have a road trip!"
Lucy exclaimed, inviting you.
"Ughhh... Lucy, you know I can't... You and Spike can go with the others. Plus, I'm not the only one who's not going."
You look over to Maia, spray painting on the wall.
The seven of you always hung out in abandoned stations. You guys called yourself, the subway surfers.
This group name was passed on, from one of your senior friends to you.
"Fine... Since me and Spike planned it, we're for sure going!"
Spike nods while he skates up the ramp.
"I'm going too, Lu!"
Zoe exclaimed.
"Me too, parents gave me some cash."
Prince K added.
You laughed,
"Well, you guys have fun and be safe. While Maia and I..."
You sighed, shaking the spray can.
"Just stay at home, I guess."
Maia finished spraying, sitting down next to Lucy, filing her nails.
"Well, seeing as I'm the oldest in our group, I'm coming as well. Keeping my eye on you four."
Callum sighed, they were always the responsible one. Callum preferred the they or them pronouns, they were much more comfortable with it.
Your friends had always went on road trips over the summer, and you went with them always. But not this time, your mom had gotten ill and no one to take care of her if you went. You sighed, feeling sad you won't be there with them.
.
.
.
.
You shivered, the cold snapping you out of your thoughts. You missed your friends, you missed the way all seven of you would go places together all the time. You were one of the first generations of the subway surfers, not that it mattered anymore.
All of you fell out after... After what had happened.
.
.
.
.
"Yes mom, I'm staying with you."
You held her hand as she smiles. She couldn't move, staying in bed everyday.
"Thanks sweetie. But I'm tired, let me sleep for a few and wake me up then."
You nod, going downstairs.
Just the two of you, since your dad left. You hated his guts, not understanding why he left the both of you.
You thought about your friends, it's been days since they went on their road trip.
They must be having a good time right now...
You thought to yourself.

Turning on the TV, you stumbled upon the news channel.
"Breaking news, a white Toyota car had fallen off the cliff. Assuming they were on their way to the mountains..."
A white Toyota car...?
"Police had investigated and it was clear that most of them were under the influence of alcohol."
They showed the picture of the car. The picture that managed to rip you heart apart. Falling to the floor,
Tears welling up in your eyes, hoping no one was hurt... But you knew that was impossible. The car was in deep, under some trees and rocks, it doesn't even look like a car anymore.
"Unfortunately, four teenagers died upon impact. They have been all taken to the hospital, But one had survive..."

It seemed the world had stopped. Time froze as you crumbled down. Unable to hear anything else.
Screaming and crying your heart out.
Unable to breathe as your heart hurted like hell. Clutching your chest, and ears ringing. Your head hurting as you sobbed and sobbed. Calling your friends names.
"Lucy!"
Shaking uncontrollably, your mind going crazy.
"Zoe! Prince!"
Your throat closing up, as your knees buckled.
"S-Spike! Callum!"
Holding yourself, rocking yourself back and forth. Knees to your chest as tears left a trail on your cheeks, eyes turning red. Vision becoming more and more blurry.
You cried so much to the point your sobs and screams wouldn't come out.
Doubling over, you hugged yourself on the floor. Unable to hear your mother's call for you as you sobbed and tried to scream.
Repeating inside your mind..
Why...

Why..?

Why...?!

Why!?

They left us...

They left all of us..!

They're gone...

They're gone!!
.
.
.
.
Your tears rolled down, one after another.
Wiping them off, sighing as you sat down on the curbside.
Looking up the sky, talking to the moon.
"Hey..."
You smile softly,
"I miss you guys... "
You sighed,
"I'm doing a lot better now, not like how I used to be... I've met these kids and they're the new subway surfers, crazy, I know... They're just like how we used to be back then. Just living our lives..."
Wind blowing, the atmosphere seemed colder.
"Although... Me and Maia never reconnected after graduation... The spark disappeared.. I'm all alone now."
Resting your head down, looking down at your feet. Crying quietly, enjoying the solitude.
Remembering how the funerals were heart wrenching.
Maia had lost her wild attitude and was silent after that incident. She had just hugged you while you cried your heart out.
You didn't wanna experience that pain ever again, so you just... Shut everyone out.
Maia seemed to do the same, and the two of you never became friends again..
.
.
.
.
"Y/N! Just... Leave me alone, please! I... I don't--! I don't want to see you again!"
Maia screamed, putting her hands over her ears, shutting you out.
"Maia! Please... I need you! We need eachother! Please... It's been months now! Don't shut me out!"
You cried. As she screamed,
"Lalalalalalalala!!! I'm not listening! I'm not listening! I can't hear you!"
"Maia! Maia! Just listen! I don't wanna be alone! Not again!"
The two of you had a screaming fest, as you cried out to her, clutching your chest. While she refused to listen.
This fight between you two happened before you had found out Callum survived. Although they needed physical therapy, the two of you waited until they were ready and able to move properly.

Your mom had passed away not too long, Maia and Callum were the only ones you had left.. Or so you thought. Maia moved away and Callum didn't want to see you because they would remember the day it happened.
You gave up, stopped reaching out to Maia and stopped seeing Callum. Graduated high school and didn't go to college.

Crying yourself to sleep in the streets, since you had nowhere to go, a man took you in. It was Conrad. He gave you the job. He gave you a living. He took care of you and got you into therapy. Finally lifting the heavy weight of your chest, but it wasn't enough.
.
.
.
.
"The day you guys died... Was also the day me and Maia lost it all..."
Looking back up to the moon, you smiled. Remembering how they all made you smile and made you feel like you belong.
"I wonder how they're both doing..."
You wiped your tears off, dusting yourself off as you stood up.
"Well... I'm going home, you guys. I'll see you guys soon.."

Turning around, you saw Frank walking towards you.
Assuming he just finished a job, you wave at him, smiling.
Pretending like you weren't just crying a few seconds earlier.
"Y/N..? Are you okay?! Were you crying...?"
He asked in a soft tone. As soon as you nodded, it all came out again. Tears streamed down your face as you collapsed to the floor.
"Y/N!"
Wrapping his arms around you, holding you tightly.
"Im sorry... I-- I just missed my friends..."
You said in between your sobs, while Frank draws circles on your back.
"I.. I just hate being alone..! I'm alone, Frank..."
"You're not alone... You have me now."
He coos, letting you cry it all out.
He stayed silent while you told him what had happened, listening to every word you said.

"Im not going anywhere, Y/N."
You looked up at him, having trouble breathing.
"It's a promise..."
Hugging you again, your head against his chest.
"But... But wh-"
The lump in your throat became unbearable. Frank rubbed your back.
"Im not going anywhere.."
"But what if... What if you do...?"
You asked softly.
Looking at him as he stayed silent.

You gulped before speaking.
"I... I don't want it to go away! I don't want it to go away... The comfort, the warmth, th-the love I feel... When I'm with you, Frank. I don't want it to dissappear..."
Biting your lip, trying to stop yourself from crying while he looked at you, quietly.
Cupping your face, resting his forehead against yours.

"Then be with me. Forever. Stay by my side, and we'll be in eachother's arms."
